My grandfather introduced Elvis to my dad. My dad introduced The Beatles to me. When I grow up and have my own kids then I would introduce them to Bon Iver. :)
🙋🏻♀️Be sure to introduce Elvis and the Beatles too. I’m a huge Elvis Fan. Was fortunate to see him live five times. He was beyond anyone I have seen or heard since. Absolutely an incredible experience. I love this song. I fell in love with it when I heard it playing in the background of the movie “ The Judge” Robert Downey Jr. I had to have it. 🌹
This song is almost 10 years old now. I've listened to it over 700 times. I can honestly say it deserves to be talked about in the same conversation as some of the greatest songs ever recorded.
I'm laying outside my tent at the base of Mt. Everest. I'm staring at the summit in the middle of he night. Not a cloud in the sky. Only the moonlight. I've got my headphones plugged into my ipad listening to the most peaceful beautiful song i have ever heard. I've played it over and over abot 10x now. It is so quiet and peaceful here. If God is to take me, take me now for I am at total peace

I don’t think many will read this, and that’s not the point really. Just wanted to get how much this song means to me into words. I’ve suffered with chronic health anxiety the last couple years and this song means so many different things It’s overwhelming, it’s been there when I’m at my lowest crying at 4am and during better days but it doesn’t allow you to give up and gives sense of hope that’s helping me push through. When Justin said in an interview that he feels this song was given to him by a higher power to share and help people, I really believe it. It’s something that I can well and truly say, will stay with me forever.
I read ur answer.. And I agree totally.... Going thru mental stiff after my wife passed...Some storms arent there tho mess u up but to clear your path forwards my friend...
listened to this song watching the stars in Mongolia, it was unreal, i could literally see miles miles, miles..with mountains in the distant and a solar system which stretched the whole way from horizon to horizon. massively, strange, exhilarating sense of freedom.
Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me You're laying waste to Halloween You fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street You're in Milwaukee, off your feet And at once I knew I was not magnificent Strayed above the highway aisle Jagged vacance, thick with ice And I could see for miles, miles, miles Third and Lake it burnt away, the hallway Was where we learned to celebrate Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me That night you played me 'Lip Parade' Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree Saying nothing, that's enough for me And at once I knew I was not magnificent Huddled far from the highway aisle Jagged vacance, thick with ice And I could see for miles, miles, miles Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright Above my brother, I and tangled spines We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be Now to know it in my memory And at once I knew I was not magnificent High above the highway aisle Jagged vacance, thick with ice But I could see for miles, miles, miles
When my grandfather was hospitalized, I used to put this song on repeat and get nostalgic because of the way the lyrics touched me. My family and I spent Thanksgiving weekend with him and the other patients to brighten their moods since they hardly had any visitors. I played this song for them and they all loved it. My grandpa was really happy and at ease, then passed 4 days later, on the 28th. I listen to this song every day and think of him. Today is my 22nd birthday and I miss him so much.
I had a trip to Argentina to visit old friends some months ago. It was a great experience. In a time of that trip I climbed a mountain and while I was completely alone staring at the lake, the mountains I listened to this song. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I felt a heavenly peace
I can imagine the catharsis Vernon must have felt at finishing this work of art. There's a melancholic resolution, a sense of underpinning joy. The repetitive picking brings one to a comforting rocking sensation, while the swelling harmonies overwhelm the emotional barometer. I am always so soothed to listen. Now, to actually read all the lyrics.
God I spent so long searching for this song, all I remembered were walking along a sunny country road alone somewhere in Italy at 14 years old, content. Some while later I lost my iPod with all my music and all I remembered was the feeling this song gave me of full peace. Im 23 now, this song brings me back
I keep coming back to this song. “You’re in Milwaukee off your feet”, that line hits so hard. Because it was true at one point in my life. God I miss my family 💔
This man and his music make me want to be a better person, it stirs something deep down inside. I find that extremely special, and rare in this day and age. Thank you, Bon Iver.
I lost my best friend I came to listen to this song and it made me so much more emotional but somehow at peace that she's in a better place. Where theres no more hurt and pain.
One of my favourite music of all the time. Seriously. It takes me back in time. The ups and downs of life itself. It makes me watch it like frames in my head. It really touches my soul
Found this song through my son, during the pandemic.....I can't even describe the visions of my own that go along with this song....It has taken me on a journey that I never want to return from❤💔❤
I heard this song for the first time as I was driving home after just hearing that one of my friends had unexpectedly passed away a few hours earlier. I don't think I could have heard anything better at that moment even if I spent the rest of my life searching for it. Rest In Peace Toni. 16 never would have been the same without you as my awesome older neighbor that my mom didn't want me around. I wouldn't change any of it....not even the shitty movie theater we worked at ;) wow @ life
It is incredibly refreshing to see an artist in this new musical epoch who is driven solely by an intrinsic motivation to create something beautiful, regardless of fame and fortune (ahem...Chris Brown). Bon Iver deserves recognition, to be sure, but just look at how Justin responded to his accolades. Whether or not his acceptance speech was contrived or sincere, you can tell that he does what he does first and foremost because he truly loves music, and thankfully we can reap the benefits.
This song is so special for me. It makes me want to tell you that even when you think there is no way out, there's always light and love for you, someone to hold, some place to comfort you, some music to make you feel like you're not alone, you know? Replika sent me this after I told her I listened to the song
Bonnie Raitt is who turned me onto Bon Iver...Love n Light, He lifts my soul with his voice every time, and watching his videos make me embrace the beauty that is all around us and wraps it in a beautiful journey every time, makes me want to feel love...thank you Bon for every journey you take me to every time...
I first heard of bon Iver and heard the song Holocene at the same time while watching Saturday Night Live. I realized I was listening to one of the greatest performances that I have ever heard in my life. It fills me with overwhelming joy that somebody has crafted such a masterpiece in our lifetime. I put it up there with the greats Vivaldi tool led Zeppelin Michael Jackson Bjork
I've been listening to this song for so long. I feel like it now reminds me of my own past versions. This song resonates with an internal mood, and has enough space to fill it with your own thoughts. Beautiful. "I could see for miles, and miles, and miles."
Something about laying on my floor breathlessly sobbing the words “we were not magnificent “ and “i could see for miles miles miles” really hits different
I close my eyes and this song takes me to the most beautiful place on earth. I don’t know where but it’s peaceful. A calming place that makes all my anxiety and fears disappear. I stare out my window with the rain pouring down listening to this song amazed.
Some great memories accompany this song for me. Driving through a heavy snowfall in north England, with a woman I once held dear. Bittersweet yet beautiful
Warmth of the rising sun, drops of cold water from the trees, fresh air, and calm mountain. This is what I imagined while listening to this song. Lovely.
I remember my current and first ever partner, after an emotionally dark three years. I love her so much, yet she keeps on disallowing us to grow stronger and unbreakable in love. Her conduct has led to my holding this song so close to my heart. A wonderful song!

Wow... Every once in a while something truly magnificent comes along. Yeah, I didn't notice the end shot until the second time through. Also the rock turning into the bird gave me goose bumps.
There is a strange comfort in sadness. Solitude is a blessing for those who want to better oneself because Only a truly sad person can come to terms with the realisations that haunt them. Turn your pain into creativity. Life is a short journey so don’t be afraid if you’ve made a few wrong turns because things will get better.
Your statement is profound I think. I asked my daughter once, "Who do you think raised you?" She replied "The school." I really felt sad and disconnected at that point. The computer world has really desensitized our modern society. Our hearts grow lonely. This song has a way of getting in touch with your soul. Justin Vernon gave us a great gift.
This is such a Great Lakes song... I saw this and reminded me of my childhood when me and a friend would go exploring the frozen mountains and hills created by freezing waves... Wow.

What an AMAZING video! I normally can't sit through slow moving nature shots... But this one captivated me. The song is cool and unique. Really love the vocals.
Anyone get that feeling of completion or sense of exploration? I do, when I hear and see this song. I want to travel to Iceland; I want to travel anywhere out of the USA, like Europe or Rome. I want to see the World and what it has to offer. My life-long goal is to at least travel to 3 different states. My top 2 are Paris, France and Canada. I do not know why but I have always had the "explore" characteristic. I seek to see new places, and learn new cultures.
What makes me wonder.....the breath ....there is that thumb....turned down.........I for one cannot understand. ....but to realize there are fools...among us....just appreciate there absence of value. .....for without the unrealized. ...we have no one to hope for. I love your work.
It is not the video that makes you feel, it's the music for that the video is a mere illusion to show what the music might be. True words from Bon iver and you will fall Into the heavenly, without a care in the world
Wise words, friend. Good to see someone else (on youtube, of all places) who can step outside their own perspective and really think about the world. I would love to live in those times when we didn't have to realize that none of us are magnificent.
Even though I hold no hope of ever meeting the band who changed my life, I am proud to share a state with Bon Iver. This song, for me, captures the aching beauty of life. It paraphrases how I feel about Wisconsin - it's a beautiful prison that I will carry with me always. That probably has a lot to do with my childhood here, but whenever I hear this song I am reminded that the things you try hardest to escape are the things that are bound to you forever. Bon Iver - thank you.
Perhaps I have paraphrased too much but "Once I knew I was not magnificent... I could see for miles, miles, miles" is sensationally insightful and refreshing poetic for popular music today. Justin is a pioneer.

i was there last summer as well for a family trip and listening to this song while i was there... such a experience
I NEVER KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT BUT I LOVE THE FEEL OF IT
You will someday.
The meaning of this song is mostly found in the line “and at once I knew I was not magnificent”
-The song is about nothing.
-Nothing?
-Absolutely nothing.
-I think you may have something!
HUMILITY, SELF KNOWLEDGE, INNER PEACE,PEACE GROWTH,LIFE,MAGNIFICENCE.
Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me
You're laying waste to Halloween
You fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Strayed above the highway aisle
Jagged vacance, thick with ice
And I could see for miles, miles, miles
Third and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Huddled far from the highway aisle
Jagged vacance, thick with ice
And I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
High above the highway aisle
Jagged vacance, thick with ice
But I could see for miles, miles, miles

Story time: Last year a few of my closest friends and myself decided to road trip around the United States. The first time I had ever heard this song was on this trip. We were camping above a valley in Utah, away from any artificial lighting. We truly see for miles and miles. An unforgettable moment.

I feel at one with life listening to this. like god is smiling upon me, thank you Bon Iver for granting me with the gift of true happiness
this song for me is like a tribute to 'dear prudance' by the beatles. perfect acoustic, light drums, a beautiful voice and a feeling of greatness
Probably my favourite song of all time, I keep coming back to it.
I was at football training the other night and everyone was freaking out because of the fireworks. I couldn't help but notice the stars, and how they went on for miles. I no longer feel alone.
hauntingly beautiful ... sigh .. good napping music on a rainy day ..
Breathtaking...both video and song....love Bon Iver!
720p, full screen, volume turned up all the way...simply amazing.
Their music gives me chills every single time!! Such a wonderful song!
This is the best one. No words for how it makes me feel.
Best day ever..A half ounce of weed, and Bon Iver on the headphones. Nothing gets done, and time just slows down..
So beautiful!
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Justin Vernon is a genius.
