Harry Potter was instrumental in my reading journey. I read it very young I've reread it many times. I knew what house I was in, and in my youth I was a member of a local sort of news team that covered nerd stuff in my area, and in that capacity I was at the premiere of the 8th movie. Harry Potter is a part of me. Since reading it I have read hundreds of fantasy series, and I have to say from just an objective point of view it does not live up to the best of them. It is not one of the greatest series of all time. It is littered with plotholes, and while the characters are very likable they are all so pretty flat. It's incredibly formulaic, and the world building is very thin and falls apart if you look too closely at it. Harry Potter came out at the right time, and it captured a generation. I will always be thankful for it existing and the impact it had on me as a person. That said it is not and has never been one of the greatest fantasy series of all time.
I’ve tried to enjoy Brandon Sanderson’s book. They simply don’t speak to me. He spends too much time talking about leather jerkins. He does however create interesting magic systems, creatures, and worlds.
I love Harry Potter so much that I can't express it in words. The stakes are really high, the world is explained brilliantly, the characters are good as well, and the emotional impact is perfect. I guess people like to sound cool when they degrade Harry Potter, like the story is not good enough for elders , like it's for kids only. I don't know what the issue is.
But it's not like cool that it brought many people to the genre. But let's not act like it was something groundbreaking or that it will influence other creatives like LOTR.
@@neutral_narr Not everything needs to be groundbreaking to be loved. Till date I have heard many complaining about various aspects of The Wheel of Time. But it's no doubt groundbreaking.
@@neutral_narr I think you underestimate the influence the Harry Potter series had. It didn't only bring in a whole new generation of book readers, it had also a huge influence on making fantasy as popular as it is today, especially with regards to YA fantasy and (Dark) Academia. The movies were just as instrumental in bringing Fantasy to the screens at home and at movie theaters as the Lord of the Rings films were. And there are well-known authors like V.E. Schwab citing HP as a huge inspiration and I expect to see more of those in the future.
@@neutral_narr literally just because of her, though. you cannot say that her terf title isnt he exact reason her fanbase turned on her. there is an entire demographic of people who love her work but love to shit on it because of her personal stances. those same people will be blatantly inspired by her while demonizing her. and they're allowed to be personally offended by her standpoints, but we have to acknowledge that the influence is there, merely consciously buried based on morals.
I used to get all of my reading material from a used bookstore. Fortunately they divided the books by genre and the Sci-Fi/Fantasy were all together. This was before the internet became a good source for finding reading material. I would just start with the A's and go through until I found something interesting. I passed on The Eye of the World (First book in the Wheel of Time) because I didn't like the cover. Eventually a friend recommended it to me and I ended up loving it.
I remember when Harry Potter came out and everyone started talking about books in daily life, and not just books but fantasy books. I was like, “Did I fall down a wormhole and end up in a parallel world? Reading and talking about books is cool now?”

No such thing as too much description about grass. I NEED to know all about how the light looks when it strikes a specific blade at just the right angle, heresy! 😂 Looks like we had similar takes on this. Also, congrats on 50K!
Harry Potter was what got me into reading longer books when I was about 8 years old, and the characters will always have a special place in my heart. I think what most people hate is JK Rowling's behavior, and the non-stop attempts to suck more, and more, and even more money out of the franchise, via never ending sequels, spin offs, and bad books(wtf was the cursed child???). Even though the Harry Potter books are definitely not perfect, I still think they are great books, and should be remembered as classics.
"Everyone hates on Harry Potter"? We may have different definitions of "Everyone". ;) It wasn't my cup of tea, but I know it was popular enough to make a movie franchise and Disney attraction... :)
I just reread through LotR and don't agree scenes are too descriptive. A ton of plot occurs in just a few pages of the book at any given point. Landscapes are described wherever they go but it's not really drawn out. But I'm with you all for the HP take! There's so much revisionist hate being thrown at it. People are making things up about what should be offensive in the story or what is bad while ignoring it was very ahead of its time.
Hello! I'm the one who claimed TWOK is overhyped! So to add some context, I'm currently 85% through the book and I've genuinely nearly DNF'd this book about 10 times. I've never not finished a book so I refuse to, but I personally just do not click with Sandersons writing style. I'm nearing the end of this book and I've actually found the 2nd half of the book to be way less interesting. I think my main problem is I find the writing uninspiring, I like poetic and descriptive writing (I'm a big fan of Madelinne Miller and GGRM) and I find Sandersons style to be just boring, written in a way that is accessible as possible yet lacking that magic of words on paper to the tangible feeling in the mind. Not to mention, there are some strange metaphors and descriptions in this book that puzzled me. "He kept making promises to himself, like a man running a long distance with no energy left". Or "They almost seemed to tumble over one another, scurrying out of the flute like children racing one another to be first". Sometimes they just don't make sense or are just a strange and bland choice of words. Generally speaking, the story does not need to be over 1000 pages, there are clear filler chapters and pacing problems, forgettable characters, too many cringe moments and a concerning lack of utilising an entire world that Sanderson has created. Limited POV chapters and locations is an odd choice. I will strive to finish this book but as you recommended Viking, I will not read the next book. Apologies for the long comment but I felt the need to express myself on this, it is rare I am in such the minority of an opinion on a book. Love your content and thankful for including my comment, hope I can feature again in the future! 😊
I feel you. I picked TWOK up after having read the Kingkiller series by Rothfuss. Trying to fill the void that one left, I was utterly disappointed by how soulless the writing of TWOK felt to me. I can appreciate the work and creativity but it just doesn't touch my heart. My best friend really loves it tho
I'm absolutely bored by Stormlight Archive. And when I think there will be more books... 😱I kinda like Sanderson's writing style but there isn't happening anything interesting on most of the pages. That's what got me bored. And I read the next three books and it's not getting better. But it's my personal opinion 😉
@@SerenitySong6 I have read the Stormlight Archive books up to Oathbringer so far and I can also relate with most of this criticism. While they finally pay off IMO with some powerful and memorable scenes, I sometimes feel that the books overdo their "slow burn" approach. Like danioli, I think the writing of a few character interactions/dialogue are cringe worthy and awkward, which is a shame because the contrast with those of genuinely compelling characters like Dalinar is striking. Those moments are not that off-putting to me to make me drop the whole series (for now), but I can certainly see flaws in Sanderson's writing and I don't mind to point them out too.
I have to disagree with the last take, I think the Rowling did a great job of creating an amazing and deep fantasy world that captured people’s imaginations, but the Harry Potter story itself is good not great.
Haven't even started reading the Way of Kings yet, but I would even go so far and say that Sanderson as an author is overhyped very much. Now I love him for ending the Wheel of Time on such a high note, I really, really enjoyed Elantris (and contrary to many, I consider it an early masterpiece) and I already enjoyed the first Mistborn arc well enough (first book is awesome, the rest really good). So I' am not hating on him at all and I'm pretty sure I would enjoy the Stormlight Archives very much. But this said, while I love his consistency as a writer, I also think he writes too much too fast and that unluckily keeps him from being the writer he could be. And that's where I think calling him overhyped is correct, because there's a plethora of authors new and old out there whose output has much higher quality as far as writing skill, storytelling and characterisation, in some cases even worldbuilding, goes. Which is basically why I have even started reading more from Sanderson even when I want to because I already have problems keeping up with those authors I consider superior. Which, by the way, is a fate he shares with Joe Abercrombie and John Gwynne, so at least he's in very good company and again, he's great, it's just that there are others who are better.
I somewhat agree with the Way of Kings being overrated take. I just finished it recently and was just a 4 out of 5. Good book but I did not think it was amazing. (Possible spoiler but don't think so): I liked the Way of Kings main characters but I got tired of how 'emotionally stuck' they seemed to be for the entire book that I just got tired of them in the middle. I was like "I get it all-ready can we move on with the character story arc all-ready". Maybe it was just me and this past month was not the best month to read Way of Kings on my side; however my experience was just a good book not amazing. I will keep reading the series though so I am looking forward to seeing if the series gets better.
I mean I guess fair but it's also a ten book story.. Things can't go at a rockets pace or we would jump the shark trying to come up with new plot points
Harry Potter is one of the greatest series for me. Purely on nostalgia. I was a teenager when I read it. I am rereading it right now and boy it is still good.
@@jakecarlstad6192 people who can't accept reality and will send death threts to the author because she dared say that only a biological woman can know what having a period is like. Now she's basically the fucking devil to these retards. it's seriously all it took, stating a scientifically accurate fact, then straight to receinving death threats
I don't think that a hard magic system is inherently better nor worse than a soft one, I think that it all depends on the story you are telling. I love Sanderson's hard magic systems but at the same time The First Law and ASOAF are two of my top series, and their magic systems are soft. Both types of magic have a place, and have a different role in the stories. I can see why someone would prefer one over the other, but I hope none take over and we have works depicting both!
I am considering to read The faithful and the fallen. How would you sell it to me considering that I loved The blade itself (can't wait to get to Before they are hanged) and was lukewarm about The Final Empire (and not looking forward to continuing with Mistborn but still open to other Sanderson's works)?
When it comes to content and morality, Gwynne is kind of a middle ground between Sando and Abercrombie. Heavy, bloody violence but no s*xual content. Likable heroes, but they aren't afraid to get their hands dirty, and you get POVs from the sadistic, or just complex, villains. Light worldbuilding inspired by history, myths, and religion, but mostly exsists to serve the plot. As for story, it's a fairly classic premise told in a modern style, but he begins to subvert tropes later on in the series. And the action is up there with Abercrombie. In fact, most people put John Gwynne as #1 for best action writer, and Joe Abercrombie at #2.
I love Smaug in his arrogant cunning, but he'd never let anyone ride on his back. So I also love Falcor from the Neverending Story, with more Eastern wisdom and loyalty. This is why I really love Dragonlance, the best of both worlds and many iconic draconic personalities.
Its amusing to see how many people became aware of the supposed bigotry and plot holes in Harry Potter only after they found that the author's political opinions were different from theirs lol
Social media/group/political/whatever else hivemind. I don't agree with her on some things and, yes, HP has plot holes but I don't think she is some unspeakable evil because of that
Criticizing Sanderson's weaknesses is more than fair, but imo that doesn't mean his stories are "overhyped". They may not be your style, but he's the main man in modern fantasy for a reason. So many of my friends that didn't read have started reading because of Sanderson, that wouldn't be the case if his books were only average quality. To me he's the Christopher Nolan of fantasy: there are plenty of fair critiques you can make towards him, but at the end of the day he does enough right that he's earned the respect and notoriety that he's garnered.
The reason why Harry potter series was so popular , and well recieved was because , its target audience was anyone who can read . Even kids enjoyed the book . If kids can be your audience , you just know your content is becoming popular . The same reason Baby shark has billions of views . But dont get it wrong, harry potter also has an amazing storyline . But for me Like Game of thrones is miles ahead of it . However because of some of its mature stuff you cant go around telling everyone go read it .
Harry Potter is a mediocore series that got lucky. This is coming from someone who got into reading because of the series, who loved it so much had all the merch, went to premiers, ect. Then grew up and realized the issues in the novel. They are of the time, racisim and sexism and just not actually that great. It's a fine series, but it is nothing spectacular, the actual impact of the novels on society is the amazing part. Then we add on Jk Rowling being an absolutely horrible person. No one should support her. Find another series to love. She is a dangerous person who spends her money and time trying to make the lives of trans people hell. Like you can not separate art from artist when the artist is still alive, cause your money literally supports said artist and their horribleness.
I don’t think it’s that everyone hates Harry Potter as much as it’s everyone (yeah ik it’s not literally everyone but you get the point) hates JK Rowling for being a shitty person. I am all for enjoying the story, it just sucks that buying new merchandise or books automatically gives a shitty transphobic person a shit ton of money. Also…jk Rowling should come up with something new instead of just adding random new Harry Potter related stories and books, it just gives “writing strictly for profit rather than quality or character” energy, which I mean good for her I guess, but that just lowers my opinion of her as a creator and writer in general. Like sure I’d kill to have her level of success, but at the expense of the writing itself? Absolutely not
Everybody love JK. The world hates narrow minded clones like you. GO TOUCH SOME GRASS. KISS A GIRL. WASH YOUR REAREND. LEAVE YOUR MOM'S BASEMENT. D-O-R-K
JK Rowling is only transphobic to people because the woke hive mind says so. I respect her for standing up for women's rights. Biological men in women's sports is purely ridiculous. JK Rowling has her head screwed on right. Anyone who can't see that she's not transphobic needs to get their heads out of their asses.
To be honest, way of kings is only good when you get to the end. The books as a whole drag and are over hyped, and the idea his prose just ‘aren’t very flowery’, that’s under said. His prose are actively bad. But the books are worth it for the endings.
@@DustinHarrisWHBCthat has nothing to do with harry potter and it's more about jk Rowling not being the best person. most people don't actually hate the story
@@random_reader11 same people who say you shouldn’t support the game because of JK will 100% say HP shouldn’t be read and find tons wrong with it because we live in a world that can’t be nuanced and needs to rage at everything. Kudos to you for being insulated from that part of the world though I envy you!
I would like it if you got someone on who actually had strong opinions that different from the standard. Someone like Christopher Ruccio or the Library Ladder
I am not a Sanderson fan. I only read the first Mistborn book but it was a slog getting through. The magic system was amazing. The world building is fairly good. I just couldn't get into most of the characters. I look forward to certain characters reentering the story in the books I like. I dreaded every reappearance of Vin. It all kind of bums me out. He is very popular and writes a sh*tload of books.
I don't hate Harry Potter, i just dislike JK Rowling but i still recognize that it's probably the most iconic piece of fantasy fiction ever (yes even more than LOTR).
Agreed. I go to her goodread reviews it’s people bombard her work with 1 star reviews because she has religious views they don’t agree with. I’m very against this modern sexual movement but I’m not going to review bomb lgbtq supporting authors because I disagree with their world view.
I would have agreed with you if this were a few years ago but now many people trash her and refuse to acknowledge the merit of her work. Of course it’s still a beloved and wildly successful series.
I know LOTR is a classic , and i will 100% read it in the future , because of its reputation. However you cant disagree that its start is highly boring and uneventful . I dropped the first book 2 times after reading about 150 pages , where literally nothing happens , and these little guys are jumping around dancing in the meadows .
I don't hate Harry Potter it's a great YA series. However, I'm critical of the author because I have lots of trans friend and life is hard enough for them. Also the author feels very hypocritical she made a story about someone who is mistreated because they are different and yet uses her power and infulence to make life harder for a minority that is mistreated.
@ILIFTTHEREFORIAM I have no problem with her saying her opinions on things. I have problem with the fact that in my home nation she has had multiple meetings with the ruling party and has used her infulence not as author but as billonaire to change policy that negatively effect minority. That is when I care. Also I work in a park so you know I touch plenty of grass🤣.
“Everyone hates on Harry Potter”? I wasn’t aware of that. I didn’t like it when I was a kid but I kind of like it now.(I’m talking about the movies) but I haven’t read the books. I’ve seen many interviews with JK Rowling and I absolutely LOVE her!
I mean, HP is a mess in terms of writing quality, and the author/author's defenders are awful, but the series itself is sooo much fun. One of those instances where the sum is greater than its parts. We won't experience anything like the hype around those releases again. ...as I drink cocoa out of a Hogwarts mug someone got me years ago, just realizing. In terms of covers, it's information overload out there, so a good cover is very valuable.
Everyone hates JK and her bigotry but no one doubts she created one of the best book series of all time. Harry Potter is one of the most beloved series of all time but no one wants to support JK so not as many promote the books anymore.
Calling a man in a dress a man isn’t bigotry, it’s biological facts. You also need to touch some grass because your delusional twitter bubble isn’t “everyone”
TWoK is the best first book in a fantasy series I've ever read. I'm equally tied with character and worldbuilding first and this series just really does both so amazingly. The prose is simple but works so well for me personally.

Great vid, may I ask who wrote the bloodstorm it was mentioned at the end of sprayed Edge question
I am considering to read The faithful and the fallen.
How would you sell it to me considering that I loved The blade itself (can't wait to get to Before they are hanged) and was lukewarm about The Final Empire (and not looking forward to continuing with Mistborn but still open to other Sanderson's works)?
Do it. One of the best fantasy series I’ve read.
@@KALtheHighstorm117 and @MetalGildarts , thank you both guys! I will give it a try once I've finished the first law trilogy
@@MetalGildarts thank you, really! Sometimes a very straightforward answer is more than enough
Great video!! it looks a lot fun. 😀
I like dragons if they are like Smaug or Deathwing(WoW). Not a huge fan of the friendlier dragons in dragon rider fantasy you see today
I love Smaug in his arrogant cunning, but he'd never let anyone ride on his back. So I also love Falcor from the Neverending Story, with more Eastern wisdom and loyalty. This is why I really love Dragonlance, the best of both worlds and many iconic draconic personalities.
Where do you buy the bound and the broken books? The paperbacks are super expensive is all the usual places.
The biggest example of the books being much better than the films
I loved the sorcerer's stone, but every book in the series was less good. It was my favorite, but by the end I had to force myself to finish.
There are different types of dragons.....but you don't like the Horny Dragons? LOL
So, the thumbnail is the opposite of what you're saying. Anyway I agree, Stormlight is overhyped.
Its amusing to see how many people became aware of the supposed bigotry and plot holes in Harry Potter only after they found that the author's political opinions were different from theirs lol
Social media/group/political/whatever else hivemind. I don't agree with her on some things and, yes, HP has plot holes but I don't think she is some unspeakable evil because of that
Except it was transphobia, not a political opinion.
We were all aware of the blot holes.
We were all aware of the blot holes.
the Hogwarts game is peek
I looooove these!
In my opinion, I absolutely adore The Way of Kings, but I am sooo burnt out on it.
But the books are worth it for the endings.
lmao "everyone hates on Harry Potter" cmon bruh
Bruh....Bru...broham...watch the video first dork.
Did you see the pushback and attempted cancellation of the game? In a big section of the online world liking HP immediately means you are a bigot
Ohh Pratham chill out.
02:43 whoever wrote that needs to touch grass😂
I enjoyed way of kings.
Charming ciry street backdrop. Damn i wish i lived in europe instead of america.
Sanderson’s taste in art for his books is atrocious.
I don't hate Harry Potter, i just dislike JK Rowling but i still recognize that it's probably the most iconic piece of fantasy fiction ever (yes even more than LOTR).
I get the feeling your mother hates you.
Disagree with LOTR take

Sad that people call JK a bigot for simply standing up for women’s rights I’m glad her work is getting the credit it deserves
women's right? yeah right. she hates cis women too, just look at what she said about Imane Khelif 😂
Agreed. I go to her goodread reviews it’s people bombard her work with 1 star reviews because she has religious views they don’t agree with. I’m very against this modern sexual movement but I’m not going to review bomb lgbtq supporting authors because I disagree with their world view.
"Standing up for women's rights" lol GTFO
She has sold more than 99% of authors of all time. How much more credit does she need? 😂
I can disagree, i love the start of the book.
Does the baby need a bottle? Go touch grass.
@@thestairs1706 Hmm I wonder why these homophobes are all horrible people.

Your "opinion" isn't an opinion, it's factual malfeasance designed to harm people.
I'm sure your trans friends find you insufferable. Have you tried leaving your basement?
6:24 I’m in book 3 and I love all the politics, page 700, slow! But it’s overhyped! I don’t get it even though I like the books
“Everyone hates on Harry Potter”? I wasn’t aware of that. I didn’t like it when I was a kid but I kind of like it now.(I’m talking about the movies) but I haven’t read the books. I’ve seen many interviews with JK Rowling and I absolutely LOVE her!

nuh uh
Wait, why is Neil Gaiman controversial right now?

I mean, HP is a mess in terms of writing quality, and the author/author's defenders are awful, but the series itself is sooo much fun. One of those instances where the sum is greater than its parts. We won't experience anything like the hype around those releases again.
...as I drink cocoa out of a Hogwarts mug someone got me years ago, just realizing.
In terms of covers, it's information overload out there, so a good cover is very valuable.
You're awful.
Everyone hates JK and her bigotry but no one doubts she created one of the best book series of all time. Harry Potter is one of the most beloved series of all time but no one wants to support JK so not as many promote the books anymore.

TWoK is the best first book in a fantasy series I've ever read. I'm equally tied with character and worldbuilding first and this series just really does both so amazingly. The prose is simple but works so well for me personally.
Brandon Sanderson writes white anime. For being too focused on magic systems, he should just develop a video game like Kojima.
“White anime” what the hell is that term lol
Thats a take
Sanderson sucks
