Great video. I reviewed many videos b4 using this one. It worked very well. The only initial problem was installing the main spring. Looking closer l observed my mistake. I needed to ensure the shoes were fitted tight into the jaws of the brake cylinder. When l did this l had no problem installing the spring.
I really appreciate when people are adding additional info - Thank you. Unfortunately I am not able to think about all the details when making video. Thanks again.
Humman Off-Road Adventures You can add annotations to note things you miss. Like a pop up that says "note: M8x1.25 bolts" when you mention using bolts in the video.
TIP: If you're like me, the shoes kept shifting out of place while trying to reattach the springs, so I held them in place by using a screwdriver to stuff a clean rag snuggly between the shoes and along the inner rim. It worked great.
4:35 no, when installing new brake shoes, especially when replacing very worn ones, the former setting of the adjuster will not match with a new set of shoes, it will have to be (fully) turned in otherwise the drum will not fit.
@Lone Wolf Don't think people would watch me strangling with spring for 10 minutes :-)... the purpose of this video was to show people that they can do it and how it is done.
Old, I know but wanted to thank you for showing the, in my way old drum brake experiences, stepped notches for the adjuster part and how they face. I used another video to do my Gen II 2005 Prius rear drum (not disc) brakes and it didn't show that. It never occurred to me that there might be a notch and that it would be important to face it the right way. Fortunately, I'm experienced enough to leave the other side intact so I can check odd things like this and got it right. RichE
Did you buy the brake shoes with the arm (that hold the brake cable) already riveted to the brake shoe? I can't replace the brake shoe on my 2010 toyota yaris because I don't know how to separate the arm (that hold the cable) from brake shoe because it is RIVETED. If it is riveted how do you remove the rivet awy from the shoe? Can I buy a brake shoes with the arm already attached?
Hey your video was very helpful when I replaced the brakes on my 2014. Only problem is I hoped my handbrake would grab better after replacement but it’s still not biting like when it was new. If I’m on a hill facing downward and put the car in drive it lurches forward. Can you offer some advice on what I can adjust to bring it back to new when it would be locked up right in about 5-6 clicks.
worse can only be described as having a near miss when coming up to a busy junction and the car wouldn't stop like it used to, now I'm afraid to use it.
Did you touch brake line or cylinder? If you did - you have to make sure you bleed brake fluid to ensure there is no air in brake line. Make sure everything is installed properly. If you still have problem and cannot figure out - don't drive and take to to mechanic.
I'd guess you used too much and it got on the brake drum, shoe friction material or both. This will give you NO brakes. But they won't squeal... :) You only need a VERY thin film where the brakes rest on the backing plate. You'll have to redo your brakes, with NEW shoes as ones that are contaminated with oil or grease cannot be cleaned up properly. Be sure to use brake cleaner spray or whatever to ensure NO grease is left on the drum, as well as the backing plate. Then put that VERY thin brake grease on the pads. Less is better. Good luck. One side gets pushes the other side of the wheel cylinder and damages it I always have problems with brake shoes any tips how to put brake spring back together without pulling 1 side so much?
I’m dealing with that MF right now.. got me acting like Jim Carey in Liar Liar when he’s telling the pen” write it or I’m gonna break it off!!” Thing is whooping my ass. If you have someone with you it’d be so simple but I only have 2 hands.

Excellant. This system causes me great grief at times. Looks simple enough but can frustrate a busy mind! Thanks.

Awesome, glad my video helped!
That tip to loosen a stuck drum with a bolt in that hole was what I needed. M8 worked. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Those wondering what sort of bolts to use, M8x1.25 bolts of any length. Really should have been in the video.

Henry Steele IV yeah there M8 x1.25
same size as what you need for a honda civic brake drum.
I have heard it from The Car Care Nut Channel on RUclips: the bolt can be found on the catalytic converter heat shield.

Yes, you need to adjust
Whoever made this ,I applaud u,I've done this a few times and it ain't easy
Thanks man, it is not easy - I know :-)

Thank you. BTW, a very good tip to refer to other side ...
How did you remove the safety brake pin to place on the new shoe?

I did. Don't you have C-whasher on yours?
Same , I have ordered a total of six new brakes and even the ones that have the brake riveted to the shoe do not come with the piece .
Where does one get the brake pads with the silver metal tab on it? Or how to you replace it?
I got mine from rockauto.com
Hello,
Can you tell me what is the position of holder for hood holder when hood is down?
I need a new drum - what is better.. a snare or a bass drum?
Excellent video!

did you adjust your star wheel?
Very clear instructions, thank you

I bought some brake lubricant 02:48, but now my brakes are worse than they were before, any thoughts?
When you say 'worse' - what do you mean?

Great video but The wheel cylinder should be checked for leaks before installing new shoes
Agree, by default you should be checking all components while you at it :-)
@@NewRoad When I was a professional mechanic, we ALWAYS rebuilt or replaced the cylinders, whether leaking or not. It's cheap insurance.
I was wondering my yaris wheel.hub bearing nuts are at rear
What size thread are the bolt to take off the drum
Pretty sound of Stephen hawking to turn up for the voice over
Do all Yaris have brake shoes on rear wheel or depends on what yr Toyota u have?
I think all of them have brake shoes at rear
One side gets pushes the other side of the wheel cylinder and damages it I always have problems with brake shoes any tips how to put brake spring back together without pulling 1 side so much?
Try to block the other side with something ... (screwdriver?)
Excellent u r a simple pro🔥
Thanks ✌️

Nice 👍🏼 thank you
Good job
Clear, not to much talk
Gracias
Thank you
What about clips out of back
my hand break is loose and hora all the way to the top, I expected to need an adjustment but the hand break is not holding the car. what could it be?
Check if line is not broken somewhere or properly attached to shoe.
Bad self adjusters. Also could mean your rear brakes are essentially gone.

very helpfull for me...thank you
Glad to help!
Thank you
You didnt say how to adjust adjuster wile installation.you dont say anyting about how to adjust..can you help me..
It is strange that Toyota puts such a humonguous brake drum on its Yaris; but Honda can get by with a tiny little drum on their Fit/Jazz.
Top spring is a major pain
I hate that synthesized voice
Artificial Intelligence :-)
That bottom spring nearly killed me puttin back in
I know what you mean 😁

Does anybody here know if this drum brake arrangement is similar to a Toyota Aygo's?
Im doing rear brakes on an aygo tommorow if it helps.
Could let you know
@@Rodney_Trotter Okay Gog, that would be good of you. I'll await your reply.
I believe this Yaris in the video is not like the aygo, however old Aygo and Yaris drum brakes are similar or very close to being the same,
This is me comparing the Yaris I have done today and the aygos i have seen on internet
I always bleed the brakes once the drum is on. Many times air in the cylinder causes squeeks.
Agreed! I think I have video about the bleeding - which I did after changing brake shoes and cylinder... i did have to replace one of them
I like how you didn’t show how to take the emergency brake pin out of the old brake shoe. Not fun.
good
The re install of the adjuster could have been clearer. Your hands were in the way so positions of "y" pieces not clear.
Frig me you could have cleaned that up a lot better than you did!!! this looks like the work of a second-hand car dealer.
sorry mom
