There's the old adage which although an oversimplification is definitely true, "amateurs study tactics, experts study logistic"

If you Air Force guys haven't seen an UNREP, you need to. It's quite the ballet. It can also be very nerve racking depending on what's going on. One of the main risks is driving two large ships next to each other. They create a suction and want to collide, and everyone is on a hair trigger no matter the size of the ships for a steering casualty. Usually your best helmsman is driving the ship during UNREP, and they earn every penny of their pay.

My Daughter was deployed to the Persian Gulf, during COVID, and received a Navy Achievement Medal for "saving the ship" during UNREP operations. Her ship (Assault Transport Dock) was taking on fuel and supplies, she had bridge watch as lookout. She kept telling the OOD there was two contacts dead ahead, from 5 miles down to 3 miles, the OOD said "there is nothing on radar, we are good". The Captain entered the bridge as she was calling out "Contacts, two miles!". The OOD looked at the radar, and ignored it. The Captain asked my daughter what did she see, she pointed out two wooden Dhows on her binoculars. The captain, called emergency disconnect, and maneuvering, missed the dhows by a few hundred feet, returned the ship to course and reconnected. He then explained to the OOD, radar is useless with wooden, itty bitty sailboats, and that's why they have lookouts in this day and age. The next day, the Captain surprised her on her duty deck with the NMCAM. Whole bunch of stuff has to work out right for UNREPs to work, and they do it, as said, every few days.
