- There are so many exceptional female folk singers, but I think Judy Collins might be my favorite. Today we're listening to her version of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now. This is a live performance with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops in 1976.

SHE SINGS SO EFFORTLESSLY, CLEAR, BEAUTIFULLY. HER VOICE IS MESMERIZING. I GREW UP LISTENING TO JUDY AND LOVED EVERY SONG SHE SANG. NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE HER. YOU CAN HERE HER FIRST NOTE AND KNOW WHO IT IS. BILLY BOY
Judy Collins was the master of vocal technique, the voice of an angel!
I saw her the other night on the eve of her 84th birthday. Her singing is still amazing; she sounds like a silver bell. She only showed signs of fatigue in her encore. She can still sing soprano. incredible. and her intonation is always perfect.
She’s so good that she can change the notes of the song and even slightly the melody while still remaining faithful to the song and making it live.
She has a strong confident voice. Relaxed and authoritative.
thank you for Judy Blue Eyes. Her pure, clean voice is always so good to listen to.
One of my favorite folk-ish songs. Stephen Stills wrote Suite: Judy Blue Eyes about her.
This song puts me in happy place. Such a wonderful version performed by Judy that breaks from traditional recorded versions of this song. The notes she hits are heavenly. Love your reactions and music intellect.
remember hearing this song and Judy singing it when I was a child. Love it. bring tears to my eyes.
Okay, now you're speaking my language! 😄Saw her perform this in New York several years back. Was looking at photos from that show just the other day. Some vocalists possess this mysterious ability to make any compostion their own. The especially gifted ones are able to take the original somewhere new without drawing attention to themselves. No idea how they do it. Judy is one of the above. As you observed so astutely, her melodic inventions/variations, etc. "feel like they were always part of the song." They really do. That's the mark of a master interpreter.
p.s. funny, but I very nearly sent you Mary Fahl's cover of this song before opting for something else (another cover) instead.
Beautifully said!
Thanx so much for crediting the songwriting to MY fav singer/songwriter/musician, MsJoniMitchell! Earns you my sub...
Judy was an earlier fan and supporter of Joni's work, so thanx to her as well. What a beautiful performance by a beautiful person!
I really enjoy your reviews of some of the most beautiful music I’ve heard in my 59 years here. You’re a delightful, pretty young woman that has a visceral love of life. Thank you so much for sharing this part of your life with all of us, and all the best to you and yours Bethany.
Thank you Paul!
I really enjoy your videos. The combination of your technical understanding of voice and your obvious love of and appreciation of great singing is something powerful. Your reactions are authentic and absolutely charming - the video on Eva Cassidy (one of my absolute favorites) just knocked me out. Have you ever considered reacting to anything by Van Morrison, Sam Cooke, Jeff Buckley or Dusty Springfield? They are just a few of my other faves. Keep up the wonderful work.
Judy Collins is a terrific singer. On balance, I prefer Joni Mitchell's 2000 version, which is so different from the wistful original, or for that matter, this version. The world-weariness in her deeper, later voice and the sublime sax playing of Wayne Shorter, add so many more dimensions to what is already a great song.
Finally! Someone else loves that performance.... I always always weep at the end .... magnificent...
I agree that with everything you say about the 2000 version... and those are all the reasons I prefer the original -- the fresh pain of naivety just lost is what made the song so poignant to me when I first heard it. The 2000 version is tremendous too... but a whole other song.
@@tldrftw I agree on all pints. All the orchestration on the 2000 version is just too much for me. Joni’s original has such feeling, and while Judy’s is lovely, it doesn’t have the emotion of Joni’s.
To fully appreciate this song, you have to hear Joni Mitchell's versions in 1970 and then in 2000 when she sang it live in front of an orchestra at a tribute concert for her. That performance will take your breath away (You can hear a bit of it in a heartbreak moment in the movie, Love Actually.).
Love Joni so much. Both she and Judy had such unique and beautiful voices.
I would love to hear you react to Joni Mitchell's interpretation of this song; both the young Joni Mitchell and the mature Joni Mitchell. Please!
Judy has an incredibly sweet tone to her voice that brings a unique sound to every song she sings. She is famously known as the inspiration for CSN song "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes" written by her then boyfriend Steven Stills. Ironically Joannie Mitchell was in a relationship with David Crosby at that time also. They wrote some great songs from those failed relationships that we have enjoyed ever since.
And Joni quite infamously broke up with David in a very creative (and cold-hearted) way.
I remember playing this in a summer school guitar class in the summer of '72. Our teacher would have us strumming along while she sang the lyrics. She was really nice, and had a sweet sounding voice. She also had us playing songs like "Me and you and a dog named Boo", and "Horse With No Name".
Judy Collins is/was the premier interpreter of others' songs and has flawless technique.
Folk music at it's best
It's a great, beautiful emotional delivery.
We REALLY need a Joni Mitchell reaction from you ... what an angelic voice.
Exactly!
You're my favorite vocal reactor.
Saw her last year Ina small venue in Shipshewanna and didn't sing this. Couldn't believe it!
Thank You Joni Mitchell for writing a perfect song
Love your videos: I could watch for hours. Please consider doing one on Phoebe Snow!
I’m a distant cousin of Judy. I always thought this song originated with her. To me this is the definitive version
Always loved Judy Collins' voice. So pure and melodic. Don't know why I haven't noticed the similarities between her voice and Joan Baez's voice before! BTW I thought the song was called Clouds, not Both Sides Now?
Clouds is the title of the album.
I really love your reactions. Cos All of them are so naturel. Real. There is no cheating I believe if Im not wrong. Thank you.
She’s amazing. Please do Crosby stills and Nash!
Thank you again!
What I love about female singers from this period is their total lack of fear of exposing their raw fragile vocals, often without any backing instruments. It's so honest, untainted, gets to you right off the bat.
good song
Nice commentary and vocal analysis. 🙂
You should do one on Joan Baez. Her performance in the first Woodstock in 1969 is a must.
A great song and a great performance! When I was a kid, my mom had Roger Whittaker's album New World in the Morning, and I will always think of his version of Both Sides Now when I hear this song. Speaking of Roger Whittaker, I hope you will react to one of his performances. The Last Farewell would be a great choice, and I'm very curious what you'd say about his whistling songs. :-)
Boston Pops - PBS series showcased plenty of great talent & this one was my favorite.
I was wondering when this was and then I saw the legendary Arthur Fiedler directing and guessed it was maybe early 80s or even 70s.
@@victoryak86 It was 1975.
I can really imagine Angelina Jordan's rendition of this anthem from my early adulthood. Angelina's respect for lyrics and singing in a way that emphasizes the song's soul.
Hey, I liked your videos a lot and appreciate your vocal analysis. Would you try Karnivool next?
Beautiful tones - hypnotic song too! Comparisons between her and Joan Baez was always inevitable, but it would be wonderful if you could analyze the operatic style Baez used in Bachianos Brasileinas no 5 by Heitor Ville-Lobos. Talk about powerful head voice! 😮
"BEAUTIFUL" that is all
As much as I am a big fan of Joni Mitchell who wrote this song, I have always preferred Judy's version much more singing this song. Just absolutely love Judy singing this song. Her voice on this song is totally incredible.
This was not my favorite version, but your reviews are wonderful. Please keep them coming.
I agree. She diverts too much from the original melody. Her version from her "Wildflowers" album is for me the best.
Great folk singer songwriter from the 60's-80's. She had a lot of hits such as "Chelsea Morning" (written by Joni Mitchell), "Someday Soon", "Amazing Grace", "Turn! Turn! Turn!", "Cook With Honey", "Send In The Clowns" etc.
I would suggest a song from Joni...from her Ladies Of The Canyon album... "For Free".
her voice is so shining, ultrabeautiful, crystalclea- a semi operatic technique (long a e i o u legato), but also smokeyness and storytelling via speaking, sometimes a little bt of vocal fry- the more edgier textures are no classical and remind me in Karen carpenter or Dusty springfield
Hard to know which is best, this or the original.
May I recommend a Video to react to? Since you have already started to go down the rabbit hole of german metal bands and at this point it has to be music reactions 101: Blind Guardian: The Bard's Song & Valhalla, live in Wacken 2016. One of the best live recordings ever captured on camera. at least imho.
In this same vein… John Denver…can you do one of his beautiful songs.
Could you do a review of Peter Allen’s-I go to Rio?
Do you ever do much older singers like Dean Martin
Judi is the first person I recall singing this song...even before hearing Joni sing it. I had a Judi Collins cassette tape that was studio produced...sorry I don't recall the title...early '70s. I have to say I like that version much better than this one. But then I'm not much for listening to live recordings.
Clannad goes a great cover of this song as well
and you haven't done a video for Joni because......?
Joni's performance taken from the tribute concert, and played in the movie 'Love Actually' .... defy anyone not to weeping....
How do you sing in head voice without sounding operatic once you've had classical training? I dont know how to sound natural anymore. If i try, i sound hooty and old.
Hi. Thank you for your wonderful analysis. Your analysis is like the light breath if the clouds. I have a question. Would you analyze my voice? I would love to hear your thoughts. I hope that im not being to forward. All the best to you. I look forward to more.
@MrTheVocalyst scam.
Bethany, here's a really neat (and beautiful) impromtu rendition of "Both Sides Now" by Vienna Teng, who I've seen perform live and whom I have met many times. She's an incredible talent. Enjoy! -Jeff ruclips.net/video/eR7KShdTezU/видео.html
Hi Jeff: Just watched Vienna Teng’s beautiful cover of “Both Sides Now” courtesy of your link. Here’s a link to British actress, Emilia Jones, unique interpretation of “Both Sides Now,” using American Sign Language to her hearing impaired friends from the 2021 movie, CODA.

Vienna’s great. Have been a fan of hers for over twenty years now.

Listen to this song performed by The tallest man on earth!
Judy has gorgeous vocal tones; my one issue is she alters so many notes from a perfectly-composed song, which lessens its effect.
Hi: Here’s a link to a video of Hayley Westenra singing a cover of “Both Sides Now,” from her album, “Odessey.” ruclips.net/video/rd8azeG1Bu0/видео.html I love how this song resonates through generations of performers and audiences who recognize the true timeless beauty of its melody and lyrics. I am 22 yr old and I love it because I can identify with it on a basic human emotional level. ❤Diane, Vancouver, Canada. WdAL19/23. 11:30 am
Hi Bethany, while I know you excel at singing, I also wonder if you can play any musical instruments yourself?
I’ve never known a voice teacher that doesn’t also play piano.
@@truthserum9157Or, rarely, violin.
I wrote a parody to Both Sides Now. Good parody but you DON'T want me to sing it.
BTW - What is 'head voice'?
Try regine Velasquez version of the song.
could you listen DOĞA İÇİN ÇAL 13 - HASTANE ÖNÜNDE İNCİR AĞACI
Dimash dropped another bomb. 😁 EL AMOR EN TI /concert version/. You'll be stunned. You just have to see it. Can't wait...
I love this song and Judy Collins but I do prefer Jonis version. Apples and oranges.....
Go for coke studio especially Atif Aslam especially season 14 😭
wonderful performance, but it needs a harpsichord. Her best song is still Albetross
Nur Cholpon Opera 2
If you listen her,you will understand me why.
No, Joni singing her song at her last tribute concert, a few years ago...... full orchestral arrangement .... the best version ever ... sorry, Judy does nothing special here, you might check out Paul Young & Clannad's cover....
Türkiye, Sezen Aksu lütfen
Next reaction VOB" ENTER SANDMAN" Metalica cover VOB BAND 3 GIRLS HIJABERS 🇮🇩 VOB consert LIVE AT FRANCE. TRANS MUSICALES DE RENNES 2021👍
It's really hard to watch some of these reactions. You are seeing artists that have no help, unlike the The Vocalyst and other You-Tubers who can sit and just critique songs. These individuals can actually sing. Get out there and sing yourselves and let us all comment. This is the modern world, just be on the internet!!!
That’s not her best performance of the song.
Still pretty good though
It,s O.K. but lacks the depth and emotion of both Joni Mitchell's original and her later version
I don'i know. First time hearing this version and it falls a bit flat emotionally. It feels "oversung" in some parts. Too much head voice and vocal "gimmicks" for me. I like the more understated version from an "older" Joni Mitchell much better.
This live version loses the magic of the original recording. 😢
Bethany-nope-this is not a very good version of her performance; suggests boredom with the song and running out of patience with performing it-you need to go back to the absolute original 1968 version for a true evaluation of Collins and the song…
Nope....as beautiful as her voice is, Judy doesn't come even close to Joni's performing of this all time classic.
Joni herself figured this is how it should be sung.

Vocal masterpiece? Probably not. But tears? Definite possibility.
Your disecting the song ruins
shes def an acquired taste which i am not a fan! to me shes all over the place trying to find the right note!
