Thanks Richard! I've only been going with this channel for 2 months now, seems be be gaining some interest so will keep it going until I return to the snow for the winter. Maybe "Ride Along Skiing, Snowboarding & SpeedRiding" this winter?
You make it look so easy! Overpowered, planing gybes and still in cap and sunnies. 😎👌 Went out in 20-25 knots with a 5.3 and 112 litre 90s race board... Okay getting on the plane and zooming back and forth, can't gybe or tack at speed to save my life - can non-planing on wind-sup (much more volume). Also fine planing 90 degrees across the wind (broad reach?) but can't seem to get closer upwind (more towards the 45 degrees towards the wind) without losing power, and drifting or starting to sink!
Across the wind= beam reach. To head up a little start with your vision, loom with your head, shoulder and hips turning. To stay powered up keep the board flat by pushing through your front toes, front arm extended to keep the rig away from you and power on. Also, could be time to put your harness lines a little further back, if I’m underpowered it could be that my lines are too far forward (like in this video I had too much power so deliberately moved them forward as I had too much power- the opposite of you’re a little under). Video to follow on this soon! Thanks for watching!
Ride-Along Windsurf Coaching with Cookie! Thanks for the tips Cookie, I have already improved loads in the last few weeks just from following your vids! Keep them coming. 👌
I tried to sail during tropical storm Laura when it passed my area Saturday, I wish this video had been released last week. I also wish I had a smaller sail😊
Great video. The other element to keep in mind, is to be in good shape. I went back windsurfing after the winter break, was overpowered, and I was just a rag-doll attached to my rig due to 0 muscles. Don't be like me, stay in shape....
Awesome instruction Cookie! Here in the Gorge we get 3.2 and 3.7 days but often times you get caught out on a bigger sail. And it’s often gusty so hard to nail the perfect sail size. You literally nailed all the techniques (that I know of and utilize, I’m sure there are more utilized by better Windsurfers) to keep you on the water successfully for a long time! What a shame to have to sit on the beach watching when it’s “nuking” in the Gorge!
Great timing, we have a day of 26knts gusting to 40knts in the forecast and with that big a spread you can’t help being overpowered in those conditions. So I’m gonna put some the tips into practice
Another great video....I love the concept of monitoring harness line positions and adjusting them on the water, great tip.... I was wondering if you might consider doing a video re water starting with the emphasis on rig recovery? Would be good to see you showing the common mistakes and how to avoid them regarding getting the rig flying...Thank you Best wishes Matthew
Thanks for the comment Matt. Harness lines are not as simple as place here on the boom. Constant adjustments and changes Will be needed. Even once you think you have them set right you may be under or overpowered and realised I need to move again! - When I am underpowered I move them back considerably so my body can do all of the work and ease the weight and the pressure through my hands. Water start clinic is on the cards… Watch this space!
@@Cookiesports Thanks for reply Simon.....I do most of my windsurfing in Poole harbour...I can beach start comfortably from being neck deep in the water but as soon as I cant touch the bottom and have to swim the rig recovery becomes the most difficult part...look forward to your planned video on this....best wishes M
Just re-watching your video.... Realised I called you Simon by mistake... Apologies for this.....(I know a jazz pianist called Simon Cooke..) Anyway, the disco gybe video was great...looking forward to practising the tips.... Regards M
Love it! Any chance for some tips about getting in the back footstrap. Front is easy. I already whatched the other videos. but with choppy condition or overpowered i struggle with the rear. For example Hitting the water with my foot, stepping on the strap, going upwind. Spectacular crashes as a result 😁
Hi Thomas. Thanks for the comment. Back strap is included in the next two videos coming soon actually- getting going in marginal winds, and how to stop catapulting! Also can find it in this video (link below!) Key point- head upwind, rig back so body can come forward and unweight your back foot! ruclips.net/video/h-71U5hWNSk/видео.html

Hi! Maybe have a play with this skill, really good fun and will help you get used to power and heading down wind! ruclips.net/video/4mIdt7-IjfU/видео.html
You make it look easy to adjust harness positions while sailing. I can't do that because lines bite into the boom. Any trick or tips to keep the harness lines that loose?
Hi Tommy! Generally the lines are attached by either a loop inside themselves (a larks foot) and/or a velcro strap. Just keep whatever fixing you have loose, they won't slip side-2-side because of friction on the boom, but like you saw on the video, being able to move them easily is a key factor to setting them correctly and having a good ride!
Brilliant channel Cookie and I've been looking for something like your approach with live on board commentary for years so thanks. As for line adjustment on the move, I start out with them a little loose then once they are set right (or at least I thought they were until I watched your other video) I then tighten them up to lock them into place. Hopefully the wind will return to Fuerteventura soon and I can put all this wonderful knowledge to good use. Just got to figure out how to fit a HUD to my helmet.
@@fertysurfer HI! Glad you found the channel- welcome! I'm actually in the snow filming now- maybe you've seen the last few uploads? I'll be back in the waters filming (and coaching) in Vassiliki for Summer 2021, maybe you can make it over! As for you lines, if you 100% they're in the right place then no harm in pulling tighter, but I never do- simply because as the wind changes, or i change through a session i may fin the 1-2mm movement makes a big difference. They're usually tight enough on the larks foot knot that most lines now use that the Velcro also there isn't needed really and i can adjust well into a session without issue! Thanks for watching, fell free to share around you surfing mates, and hope to see you on the water!! ;-)
Great videos, thank you. What is the main thing, as an intermediate, I need to work on to stop that catapult feeling when fully powered up going over chop. Thank you.
Great question that I’ll answer in video form next week- filming done just need to edit it! Key tip- look up wind & head up wind. You do not need to go down wind to get planning- unless you’re underpowered, more likely just bear away from the wind a little to power up a bit. Watch out for the video next week!
Your coaching videos are amazing, thanks for those! I would have loved for something like this two or three years ago, once you start plaining I feel you need some more realistic showcases and not the simulator to advance further. Your perspectives are perfect! The spot looks amazing, too. How long does the season go on Keros beach? In the videos it looks windier than in the weather forecast apps that I have been looking it for the last couple of weeks. Can you do something on how to handle a worse strength-to-weight ratio that I seem to have compared to my male windsurfing friends. If inbetween sails, I tend to choose the smaller one for the wind and have a more controlled approach rather than using my energy for a short overpowered session, but I'm not sure whether I am slowing down my learning because of that.
HI Sonym! Thanks for the comment and really glad the videos are helping! There's still one school open on Keros beach through October, the one I was working for is closed now though- nice time for me to windsurf and kite for a bit of a holiday! To answer you question- "worse strength-to-weight ratio" sounds just like another way of saying "underpowered". If I'm ever unsure of sail size I'd tend to go up a size, I'd rather be slightly over than slightly underpowered. It's generally easier to do things with a little more power than a little under, however, if you find yourself with not enough in your sail make sure you've watched the video in the link below- plenty of useful times to help you out there! Stay tuned for many more videos coming all the time, and keep asking questions if there's anything more I can do! ruclips.net/video/nBdWc6EUX-k/видео.html
@@Cookiesports Haha, the video nails it, that is so much me... But I'll take note of that I shouldn't go underpowere. I think right now I'm still inclined to overestimate the physical strength I need to handle a larger kit, as the feel/technique is already so much better, it's not such a big hassle anymore, the few times I actually took bigger. What a pity, I was almost tempted to try and come to Limnos in October to extend my season... I guess it will have to be another time.
@@sonym8419 Keep an eye on the channel for where I'll be based next summer. Wherever it is will be wind for sure, and me and my team will be doing regular clinics to helps everyone out! 😎👌😎👌😎👌
Hi your videos are a great help I use to sail as a child 14 year ago and just started to get back in to it. At the weekend I found I was max power planning and was struggling to hold on with my back arm will moving my harness lines help?
Hi! Glad to hear you’ve getting back on the water! If my arms ever hurt it’s because my lines are set wrong. There is no way to check them 100% on the land- get on the water and make adjustment to what you feel. Within the first few seconds in the video you’ll see I’ve adjusted them twice or three times- same in every video I make! Get fiddling with them! 👍👍👍
(Additional reminder- move the lines to whichever hand hurts- if it’s your back hand, move lines back- and usually the other hand in the same direction too!)
I am struggling when greatly overpowered particularly on my 95 ltr Mistral Screamer, I experience fin cavitation when using a 5.5 fully cambered sail, I have dropped down from a 34 cm fin to a 32 cm fin, do I need to go smaller 29 or 30 cm? I am sailing in relatively flat water conditions with very little chop.
Hi Ross, thanks for watching. Spin out (fin cavitation) can happen for a number of reasons. A larger fin will cause more lift and cause the board to plane higher and potentially out of control, too smaller fin can cause spin out. If you are already spinning -out do not go to a smaller fin, larger if anything but beware of excess lift. It could have many other reason you’re having this issue though- too much back foot pressure due to an anomaly in your stance is a common cause.
