The first three things you learned to read if you were a child of the 80s; 'Cat', 'Dog', 'Batteries not included'.
Scalextric never seemed to work the same in real life as it did in the advert lol it really was a more innocent time when kid`s could just be kid's and enjoy their childhood ..
I can just imagine the look Tom Baker must've given the ad guys when he was handed the script for his voiceover: ""Stonedar and Rokkon surprise Grizzlor?" And this advert _is_ in English, is it?"
This feels just like watching Saturday morning cartoons again, when you always looked forward to the breaks so you could see the toy ads 😁 (No wonder there were regulations to reduce or remove ads in children's TV - these were damned effective. Parents must've been driven mad by the pestering.)
Regulations like that never happened in the US. You should see commercials now directed at kids.
@@jwb52z9 I'm happy to remain ignorant, though I do know a bit about the general landscape and history (like Reagan gutting legislation and making advertising a free-for-all as one of his first acts - he deserves a lot of blame for a lot of stuff). I had a notion that things had gotten a bit better since the 90s. Maybe I'm wrong? Or maybe it's only better in a relative sense, since it got so bad before then?
My parents used to try to shame/belittle me out of it [Wanting things] by saying "You only WANT it because you seen it on TV !" [well, DUHHH]
Ah yes. Getting the paper round done on a Saturday morning and rushing home to see the cartoons and playing with the toys...
Waiting for them to invent the time machine to do it one more time 😊
I had some much fun playing tomy super cup football 😂
What an awesome toy advert compilation, some of those defunct toy brands I'm seeing are owned by Mattel and Hasbro by now hehe! 😆
This brings back fond memories! Although in the transformers ad, the voiceover mentions that Soundwave was the leader of the decepticons...how misleading that must have been to kids back then 😂
I was heavily into Trans Formers in the mid to late 1980s. And Ban Dai 'Go Bots' too (Robo Machine). Amassed a reasonable collection of them.
Transformers were a little bit after my time as a kid, so I never found them appealing, but if I'd been younger I know it would have been a major Christmas list item.
Richard briers must have made some serious money from ad voice overs he done so many.
Agreed. There's barely a compilation on this channel that doesn't have his voice somewhere.
Great memories 💙☀️
Quality as per Steve! Thanks for bringing back these memories and happy times we had many moons ago ❤️
😎👍
Tomy Super Cup Football was awesome, I played that for years. The only thing the advert didn’t show was the grinding noise it made when you moved the players, drove my parents nuts!!
I don't remember that one, but that's probably because I never had an interest in football. Does look good though. I did collect football stickers once, though .. just so I could swap them with mates at school who all seemed to be football mad.
Super Cup Football was hours of fun. I loved it. It whirred the whole time whilst playing it, and it also clicked intermittently at the automatic throw on and corner points.
I had that Tomy football game and tomy battlers .. appy days
I had a Tomy Battler arena when I was about 10. Brilliant little toy. Years later I picked one up from a trader stand at a comicon. Cost me £10, but couldn't say no. I still crack it out for a quick 'spin' occasionally. I'm planning to do a retrospective video on it at some point.
Haha I have rokon, stonedar and grizzlor in my 80s toy collection 😂
We've still got the original Game Of Life! Still makes an appearance now and again - Xmas, Birthdays etc 😂
Built to last!
During my childhood in the 70’s, my parents bought me one of these ‘two player games’ every Xmas. It never occurred to them that perhaps these weren’t the best presents to give to an only child. Then, in 1983, they got me a commodore 64, and wondered why I ended up being a computer nerd.
Does seem an odd choice. Maybe they were trying to encourage you to have friendships with other kids.
@@RetroSteveUK they failed.
4:26 I had that bike and I still have it in a bag of old 80s toys in my garage but its a bit rickety now and all the dolls hair are knotted and stiff ha ha Great retro toys video Thank you 👍🤗
That advert, though .. I wish I could have found a version with less awful sound quality. The "Barbie Motorbike! 🎶" music stayed with me for years afterwards for some reason.
@@RetroSteveUK It sounds like The Seekers 'Georgy Girl'.
@@Trigormike Definitely. The instrumental music in this was a hold-over from the original "Hey there, Barbie Girl" advert, which bastardised the Georgie Girl song. I have to presume they got permission, but back in those days, who knows!?
It was cool to see what looks like a very early Transformers ad, and the later in the series MASK ads, which I dont ever recall seeing so that was cool as I has both toys. Nice one RetroSteve you are the Don !
😎✌
now I want to play Bizzy Bizzy Bumbles. LOL !!!
That song is stuck in my head permanently! 😱
@@RetroSteveUK 🤣🤣🤣
To my knowledge I've never seen that Bizzy Buzzy Bumbles ad before, but I'm just popping back to mention that, thanks to its inclusion here, I've had _Eric the Half-a-Bee_ buzzing around my head for the past eight hours, so... thanks! (Not sarcasm, this time 😆)
Well, the Bizzy Buzzy Bumbles theme is one that's lived in my head since I first saw it in about 1990.
@@RetroSteveUK It was the original for me (though I first heard that at the end of the 90s, but this toy/ad passed me by). But kudos to a toy advert repurposing a Monty Python song - that’s got to be a great rarity, I reckon.
"Jesmar, the Uncanny Valley Dolls"
I know I heard Tom Baker and Richard Briers and Burt Kwouk and wasn't sure if the Atlantis one was Brian Blessed.
They all got about in the ads back in the day, Brian Blessed still at it..Flashhhhh
I don't think it was Brian, but does sound like him. I can see the actor's face in my head, but can't place his name.
Great stuff. We played quite a bit of Game of Life back in the 80's, good times. I had a few He-Man toys, had great fun with my brother and some friends with our Scalextric track (I'm sure mine was a Dukes of Hazard theme). Some of these dolls were pretty cringe, Lucy Lou, the urinating toilet (or potty) Doll?? 🤢
I know .. the yellow water!? Just ... why? 😟
Turbo Tops. Covid Tastic!
Cooties!! 😂
Matsushiro (a brand I've never heard of before) must have had a licensing agreement with BL or Rover or whatever it was called at the time to use the name Mini Cooper (I'd love to see someone do a wheelie in one of those), but they couldn't have with Jeep, so they rather obscurely called it The Winch. 🤨
Matsushiro rang a bell for me, but it definitely wasn't one of the bigger brands.
Somehow, "it's played energetically" just doesn't have the same ring as the original line of "bisected accidentally, one summer afternoon by me" - it's almost like they didn't want to horrify children 😜 Poor show, Bizzy Buzzy Bumbles.
I always thought those Cabbage Patch Dolls were as ugly as sin. Remember the craze over them? Caused stampedes - from ADULTS!
Definitely. I found them repulsive and couldn't understand the appeal.
The Baby first steps ad..possibly some of the worst miming I've seen ,hilarious, most have took some lessons from the old kung fu films lol.
I reckon that was a foreign advert dubbed over, hence the frankly awful lipsync. One of the creepiest adverts I've ever seen, to be honest. I included it for that reason alone. 🤣
@RetroSteveUK yea, cheaper way to make an ad for international audiences, still done today in some tv ads but perhaps not quite as bad lol.
👍👍
I find the costs £XX.99 or less weird. Was that regulated? In Australia you got the price shock when you got your the toy shop.
Here it's always been RRP - recommended retail price. It's just a guide, but you'll rarely see prices above the RRP.
I remember when in 1926, me and Toad of Toad Hall went to Brazil and we stole a balloon from the Piñata store and we floated up to the moon 💃🏼🥳🌙 🌝 🏪 🐸
That sounds adorable.
