- Take a detailed look inside the FMX transmission being rebuilt for the 1969 351 coupe as Steve from Leon's transmissions talks about the process and overall condition of the Transmission. This same auto trans backed at 351 Windsors in 1969 and was a commonly found behind 351 Cleveland's as well.
I have one behind the 400hp 351W in my '77 Thunderbird. So far she's holding up perfectly. Put in a Hughes 2500 stall converter and fresh type F fluid and she's been perfect so far
Indeed , Steve has been doing these for a long time. He has a pretty bad ass Nova that he bracket races. He knows his stuff.
It depends on the shop and the overall condition of your trans. The FMX hard parts are getting tougher to find. This particular trans was in decent shape and not totally deteriorated so no real internal damage just tired. The range out here in SoCal is between $600 to $1100 depending on where you take it.
how much is it to rebuilt it today in 2024 and upgrade it to take 600 lb ft of torque?
Stick that air hose where the sun don’t shine
Sorry no contacts in Florida. There is a place in Fort Lauderdale, Mustang Masters and they may have an idea on your FMX.
these videos are fantastic.
Thank you , hope you are subbed.
+MustangConnection1 I certainly am. i've been watching these videos religiously for the past week. it's odd since I haven't learnt to drive yet due to health issues, and I could count the American cars I've seen in real life on what hand (what with living in England and all). I still find this series fascinating
Wow you really got that guy talking :)
Will that FMX trans work with a 351 Modified?
This is good stuff. This video helped me confirm the small case assembly sitting in my 71 Javelin. For some reason I ended up with one of these instead of a BW M11 or M35. I have to admit, this is relatively nice compared to some nightmare torqueflites I used to go through every 6 months. Can these FMX transmissions be built for competition?
Thanks, beyond a shift kit not sure anyone builds a performance version of an FMX. Pretty much all C4 or C6 for early Ford performance autos.
Believe me, with the circus I'm looking at going through for a completely new engine+trans build, I'd prefer to stay on the FMX until I sort out odds and ends. There's another video after this one for a Galaxy 500 that further confirms this to be another small iron case(9.875") but I have the rare dual pump assembly with a lot of weird valve body tubes. Most notably the straight tube that normally goes to the front servo extends and bends to a port behind the usual location and the large rear pump tube that plugs into the filter at an angle. This case doesn't have a tag and I'm not able to relate parts kits to it with anything all because of the rear pump. When I ask about it I'm advised to use TransGo K6253C with NO description. There has to be someone that understands what this thing is in its entirety. I don't want to swap over to some WWII equipment.
Find that guy with the air plower and knock him out!! Great video. Transmissions are a big mystery to most hot rod guys. What is the estimated cost of the rebuild? I did my 69 FMX about 10 years ago and it cost a bunch. Curious if the cost has come down or gone up??
Anyone know if bell to trans are interchangeable from 351m fmx and 351c fmx? Have a 73 cougar 351c (small bell) with a bad trans and bought a good fmx from a 78 351m (big bell). Can I swap? Thanks
Is an FMX considered an AOD transmission? My FMX kickdown doesn't seem to have the punch required. I have a Holley 4 bbl with a rod type kickdown (I believe it's factory), but because of the lack of power in the kickdown mode, I was considering putting on a cable system (which Holley has the parts for, for a Ford AOD transmission)...but I don't know if an FMX fits that description. Thanks PS...does the rod inside of the Vac modulator on the back of the transmission have anything to do with the kickdown working)??
AOD stands for Automatic Overdrive , 3 speed plus a 4th gear for low RPM highway cruising. The FMX is a 3 speed automatic. The kick down is mechanical and simply drops your car to a lower gear for passing. Since you have an aftermarket carb you may need to adjust the kickdown linkage.
Is this the shop on Sat & Reseda?
I have a C6 I need rebuilt.
Thanks for any info and for the Great videos.
+Michael Berry Yep that is where they are located, ask for Mark and let them know you saw this on Mustang Connection. Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
Forward pump? so it has a reverse pump then?
do you have any friends in mid florida that you guys would recommend to rebuild my fmx thanks
can the background noise be any louder? geezus
+george garcia Can't really ask an entire Transmission shop to stop their work for filming.
True that but you are doing a show on RUclips. Put in the extra effort and go before or after hours. So you'd rather put out a shit video and expect people to thumbs up ? I couldn't wait to see this on a FMX . I get there and It was so hard to listen to that I went elsewhere. Great Idea, Bad job. Go the extra mile and release a better product for the fans
Thanks George!
