  • The Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store, celebrating its 350th anniversary in 2023, dating back to 1673 (the first year of the Enpō era). The history of Mitsukoshi in Nihonbashi since the Edo period is showcased in the "Enjoying with Photographs: Archives" event, held from January 17 (Wednesday) to January 23 at the Central Hall on the first floor of the main building. The store was originally founded in 1673 (the first year of the Enpō era) by Takatoshi Mitsui as a kimono shop, Echigoya, in Edo's Honcho district. The event features exhibits like a replica of the Echigoya store sign from its founding days, a large Ukiyo-e depicting the Echigoya storefront around 1716-1736 (by Masanobu Okumura), and photographs from the time when it transformed from a kimono store into Japan's first department store. Visitors can also enjoy the history of Mitsukoshi in Nihonbashi. From January 17 (Wednesday) to January 19 (Friday), a virtual reality experience of the Edo period, "Edo Space-Time Slip VR Goggle Experience," by historical CG artist Nobuo Nakamura, is also available.
