Kids are morbidly curious by nature. Wings Of Fire isn’t the first to give off the impression from the book cover that this is just some cutesy clean kid’s book about dragons. Watership Down, Redwall and Guardians Of Gahoole are also guilty of doing this. There’s a sort of art at this point to showcase the harsh realities of life using beloved animals to kids to spook them. I suspect the reason these books pull us in as adults is for the tainted nostalgia of remembering your first encounter with gorey media. In a sense it’s both a kid’s book, and an adult’s book. These books are trying to bluntly communicate “Watch this, children. Be frightened.” Adults have been doing this since the beginning of time. For whatever reason, it’s just really amusing and funny to adults to put on a scary ghost mask and scream BOO to little kids. It’s a game. The adults are trying to lovingly play monster with you. Morbid and a bit mean? Very much so.

Which there's nothing really wrong if that's your style, but when you're 15 books deep into your series you might wanna get some system in place to keep track of continuity. (According to an interview, whenever Tui had difficulty remembering something she'd pull up the fan wiki, which I don't know about you, but to me it's kind of a red flag when your fans seem to care about continuity than you do; there's an entire section on that site dedicated to continuity errors.)

So hopefully the west side has some fun exploration in later books! (Who else thought the peninsula was where the nightwings were at the start of the series only to later be pleasantly surprised in Darkstalker. We were sorta right lol)
@@zenebean I'm sorry I don't share your same point of view. For me, the problem was Tui created a whole new continent to explore for the new arc, and then just casually scratched at the surface. By the end of arc 1 I'd say about 80% of Pyhirra had been given a decent look at, in comparison only roughly 25% of Pentala had at the end of arc 3; in arc 1 it felt like Tui just ran out of time to fully flesh out the continent, whereas in arc 3 it feels like she kept getting sidetracked and never got around to finishing it. I guess that sums up my feelings about arc 3 -- it had started off as a blank slate with so much room for growth and exploration, but it seemed like towards the latter half Tui kept getting cold feet and falling back to what felt familiar (book 14 anyone?). It has so much potential, but went out with an exasperated groan, in my opinion. (Sorry, I didn't mean for this to turn into a whole rant. If Tui does flesh Pentala out in arc 4 I'll stand corrected, but as of right now with her track record I'm not exactly confident.)

Foeslayer came with her mom (unnamed I think) to a political meeting with the ice wing, while there, Prince Arctic fell in love with her and revealed his animus powers. He ran away to the night kingdom with foeslayer, and the night wings accepted him.
Having read darkstalker multiple times, there was a flash back but it was just showing how Foeslayer and Arctic fell in love, I can confirm that Foeslayer actually loved arctic and was not send to seduce him by the nightwings.
In the winglets quartet, it says prudence (foeslayers mum) actually DID intend to use foeslayer as a way to kidnap prince artic, but foeslayer didn’t know and did it anyway. Pretty convenient tbh

Unpopular opinion I know, but I still think you're being a little too harsh on Dragonslayer. Sure, it might not amount to much in the overall series, and is forgettable, but it does still tie up some loose ends and give us a deeper understanding of the humans. Still. This was an excellent summary. Keep up the good work.

Also, Foeslayer never thinks of animus magic as her objective, and she seemed genuinely surprised to find out that it even existed. Also, in book seven, she says that she never wanted to start a war, but she and Arctic just wanted to be together.
Semirelated to Wof but the BOE idea always seemed left field to me. Why is there a sentient plant capable of mind control? Was this a Tui made idea or did someone suggest it to her? I know she was one of the authors for Spirit Animals so did she get that from SpAn? Around the time TLC arc started, that series ALSO had an Old God creature with mind control bent on taking over the world. Are there OTHER books by scholastic that also have this plot thread? If so, who is giving authors this idea?

The Breath of Evil seems more... aware, than most plants but it's person like intelligence was poached from Cottonmouth and Lizard(Freedom). As for the mind control, there's enough precedent for natural magic in creatures of the setting I don't see it as too unusual.

8:27 I don't think Foeslayer did that on purpose. Her mother was furious with her for falling in love with Arctic and called their dragonets mistakes. Also, Foeslayer never thinks of animus magic as her objective, and she seemed genuinely surprised to find out that it even existed. Also, in book seven, she says that she never wanted to start a war, but she and Arctic just wanted to be together.

Semirelated to Wof but the BOE idea always seemed left field to me. Why is there a sentient plant capable of mind control? Was this a Tui made idea or did someone suggest it to her? I know she was one of the authors for Spirit Animals so did she get that from SpAn? Around the time TLC arc started, that series ALSO had an Old God creature with mind control bent on taking over the world. Are there OTHER books by scholastic that also have this plot thread? If so, who is giving authors this idea?
look into cordyceps, it's a fungus that can 'mind control' certain insects, including turning them into zombie-esque creatures

The Breath of Evil seems more... aware, than most plants but it's person like intelligence was poached from Cottonmouth and Lizard(Freedom). As for the mind control, there's enough precedent for natural magic in creatures of the setting I don't see it as too unusual.
