+Stephen Chapman can you go through the process of eliminating bad pointer scans on video, just based on your explanation here I think I may be doing something wrong.
I'll be doing a video on CE's pointer scanner soon. In the mean time, you might want to try manual multilevel pointer searching (it's a lot easier than it sounds). Here's a tutorial I created to do that: ruclips.net/video/14yCyf9ibK0/видео.html
***** Indeed. Instead of those *bullshit* ones that they have on CE itself... Who wrote that crap anyway? The wording and the exercises are such *shit*. (Hopefully you don't mind curse words much).

Mist Fading That's the thing about learning: some people understand subject matter faster than others, or in different ways than others. Gotta say, I spent several hours the other night struggling to piece together the bits and pieces of Cheat Engine that I did understand and couldn't quite find the right tutorials to make it really click. I just finished running through all 7 (I guess 8 technically) of your introduction to it and now the dots are starting to connect. Many thanks. A question though, one of my favorite types of cheats in an rpg is modifying/increasing drop rates of items from enemies, and from what I've toyed with thus far, it's definitely more involved, or at least more difficult to track down, than finding a visible value like health, money, etc. Do you have any advice for a starting point, or something that might be a semi-standard startpoint for something like that? I'm not even sure what I should really be testing against on value checks.
your videos are great man they're helping me get to grips with cheat engine past basic finding values and changing them... what i really want to know is all the methods of finding a base address. I'm trying to do that for money in Grim Dawn using the pointer scan method but it's taking a fair while to whittle down the results... could really do with another tutorial maybe on manually finding base addresses.
Hi Stephen Chapman. 2 year ago i was learning your tutorial video. and now i remember that this pointing address. than i came back to watch your tutorial again. but the pointing address result was 0. i had no idea what was happening, i'm currently using cheat engine 6.4
At 12:10 you get a pointer scan result of 4. You mention that your could get more. I understand that and leads to my question. I have over 2000 results when I try to find the"lives" base address in Contra. I kinda get lost at this point because your tutorial days to double click and add each one. Do you have a section where you talk about if you get multiple results and how to narrow the results down? Sorry I know this post is very old.
I'm not sure what went wrong, but the pointers basically worked until I restarted game. After that they had wrong or unknown values like addresses would when you do that.
Pointer scans do work and pointer maps work very well to find a stable pointer but takes time. I find best method is injection copies. You should do a tutorial on it cause cheat engine can find the address for you much faster and more stable.
so what to do when it's a dynamic adress and a pointerscan give's 0 results...But when the value is changed in the dynamic adress it changes ingame aswell...
Look for the instruction that writes to the address and see what you can modify there, then create an AOB script based on it (which I cover in the series if you keep going with the videos). =)
Nice job! Great tutorial! Although, I can understand people intimidating about these things if they don't have at least basic knowledge of memory mapping of processes and low-level programming.
In which video do you go into more detail about pointer scanning? You said not to worry about the whole list of search settings 'for now'. However I get 160.000 results.... I cannot manually change them all to check which one is the one im looking for.
How do I move the point scan results to the cheat engine when there's like thousands of results. I cant seem to select all, and I'm not clicking each one individually..
I applied that method, but the problem did not give me any addresses, meaning when saving the search under the name 1.PTR It does not give me any addresses as it appears in the video, but it gives me the same page, but it is blank and gives me a pointer count of 0, unlike what appeared in your video that it found 4 Bearing in mind that the game is running on an emulator DOSBox
I've used the same emulator, the same game but on CE 6.4 and 6.5 and my pointer to 0 value on 2 bytes type. Otherwise if I try it on CE 6.3 works perfectly. Do you know why it happen?
+Stephen Chapman Ok, I have tried some things and seeing the memory I see that the pointer was wrong by two pointers, o.O anyway, your memory region lesson help me with it, thank you so much
okay, so I found an address for a collectible item, but when I try to change the value, it reverts back to the original. I did a pointer scan and ended up with millions of results.. 2 questions: 1) why is the address not allowing me to change the stored value? 2) how do I reduce the pointer scan results to something reasonable?
There is a real problem, especially with the change of the title whenever I close the game and restart it, the title always changes and may change from one level to another despite the unit of the item. And going to the new level, I find that the title has no effect on the gold in the level, as well as if I close the game and restart
What if I have 6 values for health. All pointer scans don't bring up anything. The addresses that aren't visual values are dynamical because they reset to the true value.
Hi there! Does pointer scanning can change a value in an address that updates every miliseconds? I mean I can't change a value ( in an offline game ) it keeps turning back to the original value
What the hell is happend? I have CE 6.6 When i click 'Pointer scan for this address' his come up: "You will get billions of useless results and giga/terrabytes of wasted diskspace if you do not use the compare results with other saved pointermap option. Are you sure?" When i clicked YES, i select 1.PTR then it took a bilion years loading then get stucked.. help?
Still struggling with it, but on the right track with your help. Scanning a current generation game, 158k pointer results. Any suggestions for adding them to a table without "double clicking each one"? Sure as hell don't have time for 158,000 double clicks lol
Why is it that when you add the 4 pointers to the address list they suddenly all have the same address in the list? I ask because in the 1.PTR file the 4 pointers had different adresses each. This confused me a lot
I think what's confusing you is Cheat Engine is showing the address that the pointers are pointing to, rather than the address that the pointer is at. It says P->02ABC70A, meaning the value of that pointer is pointing to address 02ABC70A. And then for the value it shows the value of the address that is being pointed to. A pointer is a memory address that stores another memory address. Imagine your health value is (currently) stored at address 123456. Somewhere else in memory, maybe address 312642, there's a pointer to your health. The value of this pointer might be 123456, because that's the address of your health. If you add the pointer to your list of addresses, it would show up as Address: 312642, Value: 123456. But if you double click on the address and mark it as a pointer, cheat engine will show it as Address: P->123456, Value: [your health value]. I hope that helped
what about roguelike games? do you still need to close the game and reopen? I'll pretty sure the addresses change each run but after 4-5 runs my pointer scans stop working?
I do this way on gta san andreas but I have a millions of pointers but i choos onley on and save and close the game and cheatengine and open it again and load the pointer you now what I mean and when I load it the question mark popup with the pointer but the original adrees it is still work
I keep getting zero addresses? What am I doing wrong? It’s great in the video...but what’s happening in your vid is totally not happening when I scan...any help?
Did you select the right process? if you make an "Unknown initial value" then it MUST yield all the values of the game, they won't be shown because there are too many but it will say the amount of found values on top of the list
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. It's definitely possible for a one-byte value to have a pointer! At its most basic definition, a pointer is a memory address that points to another memory address. While there is a base address that stores the value, the address that all the pointers are pointing to also stores the value. So, a one-byte value could be the value that's being stored and the pointers between the address it's being stored in, and the base address, would all function exactly the same as if a 4-byte address contained the highest possible value for it to store!
i don't know what im doing wrong if i do a pointer scan with the address of my Health ill get the pointers of my exp. points but i i use the max health and do the scan its giving me the right pointer's ( i use the same emulator and same game ) (Cheat engine 6.8.3)
Hey, so i did this for a newer game and got 122 pointer scan results in the first try. If i understood you correctly the next step should be to restart the game and repeat... then compare the scan results and remember which one comes with every scan ? whats the easiest way to compare ~130 results is there another way than doubleclick each result ? Thanks for your Tutorials :)
My game don't seem to have base pointer ? Is it possible ? Do i have to create my own pointer ? Game is Crashland PC i tryed 5 pointerscan list down to 72 result and then the list started to grow back all the stored pointers didnt work after a game restart ? I want to buil a trainer exe for max health, godmod, one hit kill etc... But didnt find my way throught the xmm0,eax,ecx etc...
hey i really need your help at figuring this thing out! mov [edi+ebx*4+0C],esi mov edx,[edx+esi*4+0C] mov edx,[exc+edi*8+04] can you give me some idea how to figure out the offset?
Can someone please help me. Everytime I do Pointerscan it gives me lots of address and I don't know which one is the original value and I don't know how to fix it.
Did this in visual boy advance and it works! I hope you see this and can answer for me, could I do this method for PCSX2 and other emulators? I keep seeing “emulators don’t have pointers you need AOB scan etc” and stuff like that cause it’s emulated which I know is I guess true but you found pointers here in an emulator and I did. I’m so confused.
thanks bro for your tutorials, i've learned a lot , i've tried pointer scanning on farm frenzy, but the results are so many records, how to reduce them? thanks again : )
Hello. Im learning how to cheat now, thx for the videos, i had been always curious about how it is done. Currently im trying to learn how to find the 'static' pointers (idk if this is the correct name) in pointer scan but turns out i only find thread stack (not the game.exe + something thing). Any clues about this problem? using windows 10 64 bits, nothing more thx
Hello Stephen, Thanks for making the videos as I am learning lots. Now on this topic/video I have a question or problem. When I open my game and then open cheat engine everything is fine I can change game stats ect. But the pointer scan does not work, When i do that the whole point scan shows and Adobe air.dll file even thou that is not the program I am using working on. The game i am trying to find the base id(s) for is Evoland 2. So is it normal that the pointer scan shows other programs .dll file? I am using latest version 6.6 64bit cheat engine and I follow your steps but have not once been able to find the root id that stays consistent . Thanks in advance Gren
This is an ooooold video of mine. I've done such things in subsequent videos. Or, GuidedHacking has a fantastic video on pointer-scanning that specifically compares multiple scans.

Thanks
i don't know what im doing wrong if i do a pointer scan with the address of my Health ill get the pointers of my exp. points but i i use the max health and do the scan its giving me the right pointer's ( i use the same emulator and same game ) (Cheat engine 6.8.3)
So a value won't change but I know what the value is for and I want to change it, what should I do? (P.S. These videos have helped me a lot.)
Hey,
so i did this for a newer game and got 122 pointer scan results in the first try.
What route should I take when a pointer scan returns zero results?
hey i really need your help at figuring this thing out!
mov [edi+ebx*4+0C],esi
mov edx,[edx+esi*4+0C]
mov edx,[exc+edi*8+04]
can you give me some idea how to figure out the offset?
Can someone please help me. Everytime I do Pointerscan it gives me lots of address and I don't know which one is the original value and I don't know how to fix it.
very good tutorial thanks
What should i do when i got after scan 200 of adress?
Did this in visual boy advance and it works! I hope you see this and can answer for me, could I do this method for PCSX2 and other emulators? I keep seeing “emulators don’t have pointers you need AOB scan etc” and stuff like that cause it’s emulated which I know is I guess true but you found pointers here in an emulator and I did. I’m so confused.
is the pointer scan any different in CE 6.5?
MadBabyPuncher no
I don't think anyone else has said this but when I do a pointer scan it comes up with something completely different pls help
what do i do when i find several millions of results in pointer scan?
thanks bro for your tutorials, i've learned a lot ,
i've tried pointer scanning on farm frenzy, but the results are so many records, how to reduce them?
thanks again : )
+Mohammad Sobhi Restart the game, Pointer scan the scanned address, Rescan address, put the new scanned address and repeat
I have like 800 pointer scan results. what do i do from there?
Rescan after restarting the game.
@@refract8491 9000 pointer scans after restart now what do?
Thanks a lot Teacher....you Rock.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance
Gren
where did you learn quigibo?
+Anato The simpsons, where did you learn it from?
You should've made an example of a more complicated game, like how to compare more than one scan results.
This is an ooooold video of mine. I've done such things in subsequent videos. Or, GuidedHacking has a fantastic video on pointer-scanning that specifically compares multiple scans.
Can use CE on Unlimited ninja and make a video on it
