With a telephoto lens it's easy to lose perspective.......From Juan's pictures and earlier drone footage I'm guessing most of the debris that washed down come from the canyon to the side of the spillway.......The shotcrete that is still there on the left that Juan circled helped to stabilize the face. That face is clay and will erode quickly. The water flowing over the edge is actually not dropping on to that shotcrete, that's what the 40,000 CFS was all about. Where it did drop onto the shotcrete it was eroded in a hurry. Excellent guess as to how much to let flow.....http ( colon slash slash ) cdec (dot) water (dot) ca (dot) gov (dot) (slash) cgi-progs/query F?ORO ...You'll have to reformat it to see the site. It shows the water levels and flow rates. Juan shows it some times........STUPID FORMATTING
It also makes one really wish that there was an international news organization with that same take on the news. Just the facts, and only opinions based on those facts.
(Regarding DWR) "We ain't got time to wait for them; we're getting our own pictures". You certainly DID! These crisp close-up photos are very revealing and informative in showing the extent of the damage, with those at 1:57, 1:59, & 2:04 catching my attention in particular. I also appreciated those of the workers and equipment. The butterfly on the wildflower at the beginning was a nice touch and the color in the other wildflowers was "a place for the eyes to rest" as we say in quilting, and the beauty we need in the midst of this disaster. Thank you.
Juan, there is just nothing else like you in the reporting world. A pilot's eye for detail and the facts is so unbelievably refreshing. Thanks so much for taking the time. :{)
I love the annotations you put in your videos "So they don't tip over" for instance I assumed that was the reason you pointing out the "small" buckets. However it's nice to have complete information like that.
Thanks Juan! As always, a professional report told with warmth, intelligence, and wit! Loved the way your pics changed in step with the music...cool. Thanks for all your hard work during this difficult time for Oroville Dam and those affected by it! We really appreciate you!
great update as always Jaun. As someone that would like to be critical of the CA government's poor management of its resources I have to admit that regardless of the "who is at fault" side of things, this has been handled well by the folks running this show.
I dont live in Cal but even i appreciate your accurate relaying of the information of what is going on in such a critical situation. Facts can calm fears. Thank you for that. You seem to be the only one that want to get solid and as accurate as possible information to the people living in the area and especially down stream. It kind of pissed me off a little to see other presenting your information and presentations as if they were their own. The people there should be grateful that you have applied your talent and attention to detail to this situation. Thank you for taking the time and the energy to do this. I am sure that you are greatly appreciated by your neighbors and friends.
your channel has been a huge asset to the people of Oroville and the rest of the country from updates. keep up the good work. You have a talent and what looks like a solid retirement side job option. lol
Hey Juan...I've been with you since your first report of Oroville and continue to enjoy (and learn from) your channel. Little Pete is obviously going to be a pilot, too. When I looked at your photos today, I am reminded of the terrible destruction of the "placer mining" in California. The hills were decimated and the waters were always muddy. Please continue your updates. The snow will be melting in a few months and I know you will keep us informed. Thank you!! Paul-Sonoma
Great report, once again, and timely with the straight facts. I'm impressed you called out the fake news without "Throwing them under the bus" or in this case "Throwing them into Thermalito Deversion Pool".
Great update and much appreciated form the locals who are trusting there future on the stabilizing repairs which are going forward. After watching your fantastic video, I could see the beauty that does encompass this whole area and is one of the reasons I love living here , so keep updating, if possible . Coming to you from Evacuation Area 1A, Oroville, CA
Great update, White Lilly, LOL. Thanks Juan! I really appreciate you taking the time to do these. The photos were really appreciated - helps to maintain perspective on this incredibly massive undertaking. Keep em coming!
Thanks Juan for your great, complete updating of this situation.. and done just cause you care. You set a great example, may there be more great people like you. Thank you!
Juan, I really love your channel... I'm going to need you to find ANYTHING to report on .. Or maybe you can go on some good adventures... My dad and I really enjoy watching all your videos! They are so great... Maybe you could be the new Huell Howser lol :) ... I miss that guy & you would be 👍
Juan - Great job once again. It is so refreshing to listen to a knowledgeable individual report the news, without the politics and without insulting your viewers' intelligence. Who would have thought that a professional airline pilot could so completely eclipse the "professional" journalists in their own field? If you ever do quit your day job, I'll tune in.
Thanks for your updates Juan, fine presentation with a high standard of technical content, you make it easy understandible and pleasant listining. I keep following your continueing reporting.
Thanks Juan. For those wondering about the seepage from the main dam wall maybe you could get pics to confirm weather or not there is seepage. Good Job.
You've been a total asset to inform the world of what's been going on and the reports have been very professional indeed, I'm actually going to miss watching you when this disaster has been cleaned up and restored. You have my total respect and even if your day job and pay is to your liking, I think they would miss a great opportunity not to hire you full time.... Once again I thank you for your reporting . Peace with you. 👍🏼😊
Juan again thanks for the sensible and factual reporting. You are the only person I trust to give me accurate information and I look forward to each update. Because of your Oroville dam reports I have also been looking at your motorcycle and aviation vlogs. Thanks again.
He got *fantastic* shots unlike anything available of the spillway, which have been lacking frorm DWR for a week - pictures that show the upper SW is holding up well enough for this summer.. The ravine is irregular - it is impossible without a drone to look up the ravine.
Always a fantastic report, precise, high quality, precious information and yet in alternate with the kites makes the “blancolirio”chanel enchanting!!!!
You provide the most intelligible, concise information on the situation at the Oroville damn that I have seen on the internet. Including from some of the talking heads from the quote talking heads of the news services. They can't touch you. Thank you.
Thanks Juan. I had not seen any footage upstream from the spillway since the latest release, and was concerned about that hillside. It looks like they're starting to bench it down, which makes me feel better. Great reporting, but that's to be expected from a fellow former USAF!
Right on, Juan. As a 45 year crazy skier of the pow, (and former pro ski photographer) we call ours Cascade Concrete....and yours Sierra Cement...fwiw... Great pics.... Confirming what I thought, that only about 20% or less of the shotcrete washed away. Also glad to hear you address the Sac Bee article, which really got a lot of folks worked up. I didn't much like it, and also thought it was overblown. You also stated exactly what I've been posting on other of these boards, that big spring storms are extremely remote. That said, the only time I skied Mammoth, it was the first week of April and we were treated to two storms, totalling over 4 feet of real fluff!
Welcome to Dallas :) I have lots of family in Northern California so I have been watching this closely. Thank you so much for continually providing accurate updates.
Thank you for the best coverage & explaination of the recent events at Oroville. Amazing work done to get out of the "tight" situation to this stage. My prayers continue for you guys.
Thank you, Juan. It appears that DWR has it's head out of it's behind and is doing the best engineering possible. About time for California to take care of it's infrastructure!
Thanks once again Juan from the other side of the planet where we watch with great interest this extraordinary disaster and engineering conundrum. Great reporting once again, time to hang up your wings and take up one of those information officer jobs😁
Wonderful job. Lots of good information. Look forward to hearing about the upcoming report. Maybe you could do the DWR PR position one day a week. You sure would be great at it.
thank you for another thorough update. i'm not loving the erosion on the left hand side, nor the budget restraints but clearly things are not as crazy as a certain Busy Bee would have us think. seems that your only motive is understanding.
Thank you for your honest, objective reporting. The "big media" should sit up and take notes!! I've been watching since the beginning of this incident.
Great coverage as always Juan. Hey, maybe do a quick cover of the Folsom Dame project and recap the implementation of their secondary spillway project. Looks interesting.
The terracing you described, between the spillway and the dam, is not to reduce erosion as the water will not get that high. Rather, the terracing is to reduce the load on rock which IS exposed to erosion, and thereby reduce the possibility of a landslide if that heavily loaded rock gave way. A landslide would have no effect on the dam or the spillway, but a large amount of debris dumped into the channel below the power plant would necessitate a VERY fast shutdown of the power plant as well as cost a lot more money to remove from the channel than it's costing now to remove from dry land. As for your kite video, three words: Old City Kites. Deltas are fun.
Thanks Juan. After that last release I was very surprised at the amount of debris which again almost blocked the diversion pool. The pool became very choked and shallow with rapids/turbulence showing how shallow it was at it's narrowest point. Your videos show the almost daily changes in the landscape situation so please keep them coming they are valued. Best regards.
I can't overstate my appreciation for your reports which are free from any political or religious agendas. Having someone there who is interested in presenting facts as the story unfolds is so helpful to us who do have concerns about the welfare of the community of Oroville and all the areas that are affected along the Feather River downstream. Thanks.
2:56 Voice says "Fourth of february" Caption on video says "4th of march" Actual date is fourth of april. *STILL* deserves a +1 for content, being better than any of the actual news channels.
another great video Juan. Since the updates won't be as frequent about the Orville damn you can always give us update on your travels. Your "day job" hope to see more videos soon
Awesome update and thanks for bringing us down slowly off the blancolirio addiction. I still get the shakes after a few days, but it's getting better. ;-) Glad to see you spending time with the kids flying kites. They grow up fast... Sure, they might be grandkids, but that's classified information. :-x
Thanks Juan! Always fascinating to watch your reports and see how they are managing Orville. Also love how you stick to the facts. Im from Niagara Falls NY and I live by the Robert Moses power plant reservoir and this situation makes me wonder because there are reports of the reservoir leaking and even causing a small sinkhole a couple years back. Thanks for the updates!
Just awesome footage Juan ! Just got back from The Big Sky Country and now doing some catching up. You've been very busy I see. Thanks for your on going hard reporting ,stay safe .
Great Video as Always! I hope you're not flying near Atlanta tomorrow (4-5)! We're going to be dodging Tornadoes & 2"+ Hail in the afternoon! Fun Times in the Spring! Thanks Much & Have Fun!
Juan, you've done a wonderful job reporting on this crisis. I think the networks will be looking to hirer you away from your day job. Thanks for your diligence.
Good thing I watched the whole report! I had a question and you answered it before I hit comment. "Do they really have to use those little buckets clearing the debris field? Wouldn't double sized buckets get more done in less time!" Really love you reports! I live under the Table Rock Lake Dam on Lake Taneycomo Hollister Missouri.
From one USAF family to another, you rock, Juan! Great update & thanks for your honest, no B.S. efforts at reporting the latest at Oro Dam. The pix were top-notch too, wow! Safe travels... liked your t/o vid from SMF 😎👍
Juan, make more videos of your trails and the upkeep and construction of them. Also, report on the bicycling trails would be interesting to see. Thanks
Outstanding video, thanx! I would guess one of the next things that needs done is to remove the bottom end of the concrete spillway. I can't imagine that ever being used again, and they should probably begin preparing the grade for whatever gets put back. Overall though, it looks like work is progressing. The problem being how many years will it take to replace that spillway.
I'm thinking that it would be best to allow the loose stuff thereabouts to be washed out in the next couple of controlled spills. That would make any fixings down that side easier to put in place.
It's going to have to I'm afraid. They will have to control the release rate but that will be a compromise between the time it takes and the damage it does. Not something they are likely to get perfect at the first attempt. They may have to do releases all summer and over winter too. We'll know soon enough what plan is going to be adopted but if they are going to bolt in place a steel structure to support and stabilise new concrete, that will have to be done in stages. At any point that construction has to be able to survive any releases, planned or otherwise. We shall see............
The lake is at 844 and going up at a foot a day to 865. That should be about 2 to 3 weeks. I think they'll shotcrete again once they have a better look. I can't see a steel structure. The span is too long, even with supports. At 40,000 CFS the water is running at about 4 feet deep and flowing hard ( kinetic energy )
I'm thinking more of a steel lattice/geodetic structure bolted to bedrock that is then filled with rock and concrete to make "new" bedrock. That can then be given a thick top layer of concrete, with proper re-barring (!) to make the new spillway surface. The sidewalls could also be supported and reinforced by steel that is part of the under structure.
Thank you for your excellent updates and footage Juan! I guess the Power Water should never be underestimated! The humans look so insignificant when you see the scale....
Another great report Juan. It looks like the lower spillway is going away piece by piece. I wouldn't be surprised if they shotcreted the left side a little wider to stop that erosion. Keep your eye on Gov Moonbeam. I'm sure you could find a story there.
Twentypdr Parrott I have no doubt that Juan knows more about the power plant than you or your brother. Go back and watch all of Juan's reports. Much better than any official new organization.
High 5!!!! Great job!!!
Fantastic reporting Juan ;-)
It's amazing on how fast they can burn through 200 million Tax Dollars
Fantastic photos!! The different views gave me a much better understanding of situation.
With a telephoto lens it's easy to lose perspective.......From Juan's pictures and earlier drone footage I'm guessing most of the debris that washed down come from the canyon to the side of the spillway.......The shotcrete that is still there on the left that Juan circled helped to stabilize the face. The real story is how little that fiat money is worth and the Davis-Bacon Act.
Juan, I like your reporting, It is Factual, and straight forward with out any SPIN!
Far superior to any of the media outlets, thank you!
It also makes one really wish that there was an international news organization with that same take on the news. Just the facts, and only opinions based on those facts.
I will add my vote of confidence on your superb reporting on this ongoing story - fine job Juan.
If you want to support Juan, there is a paypal link in the description.
you are right. He is what the media is not

yes, things i should have explained better...
timaahhh, yep also agree Juan made a good catch w the annot. This reporting beats MSM anytime, even the bumper music is good listenen'
blancolirio don't change anything, your videos are great. Straight to the point. No bullshit. Amazing
Absolutely beautiful photos!
Clear, sharp , nicely done.
Thank you for doing this series.
Thanks Juan! As always, a professional report told with warmth, intelligence, and wit! Loved the way your pics changed in step with the music...cool. Thanks for all your hard work during this difficult time for Oroville Dam and those affected by it! We really appreciate you!
Once again we get another great report from Juan, Thanks again!
Your reporting is better and more informative than the 'real' news. Thank you so much for all of the hard work.
great update as always Jaun. As someone that would like to be critical of the CA government's poor management of its resources I have to admit that regardless of the "who is at fault" side of things, this has been handled well by the folks running this show.
Roger Funk III Agreed. Cannot trust the state to spend the funds responsibly though. Wish it was not so.
As a long time Oroville resident I thank you for your clear and concise reporting. Very informative.
Great update! I bet you never fly without that notebook...
That's right!
Yep, something about a steno pad that conjures officialism.

What's worse is many are using his work and using it to spread fear and misinformation.
Thank you sir! The most informative reporting on this entire disaster out there. Great pictures today as well.
Thank you for a awesome report. I always look forward to your videos
Once again, Thanks for your efforts ! Your stuff is the best source I've found to date !
your channel has been a huge asset to the people of Oroville and the rest of the country from updates. keep up the good work. You have a talent and what looks like a solid retirement side job option. lol

I just wanna say thanks Juan for doing this great service for the local community and those watching around the world.
I think we need to see a lakeside report from the sailboat Juan.
Ohhhh...good idea!
Great report, once again, and timely with the straight facts. I'm impressed you called out the fake news without "Throwing them under the bus" or in this case "Throwing them into Thermalito Deversion Pool".
Juan,
Thank you for your USAF/ANG service. My father was USAAC 1944-1946 B-29 navigator.
Great reporting as always - thank you. Paul
Great update and much appreciated form the locals who are trusting there future on the stabilizing repairs which are going forward. After watching your fantastic video, I could see the beauty that does encompass this whole area and is one of the reasons I love living here , so keep updating, if possible . Great update, White Lilly, LOL. Thanks Juan! I really appreciate you taking the time to do these. The photos were really appreciated - helps to maintain perspective on this incredibly massive undertaking. Keep em coming!
Yes, it's refreshing to hear Juan give the factual story of the Oroville Dam situation. Juan is the Real News guy on this story!
Thanks Juan for your great, complete updating of this situation.. and done just cause you care. You set a great example, may there be more great people like you. Thank you!
Juan Brown, Nominated Journalist of the Year. You have a natural knack for reporting Juan its Great.
Every report you do on Oroville is waking us to how vital it is to us all . Thanks
Juan, I really love your channel... I'm going to need you to find ANYTHING to report on .. Or maybe you can go on some good adventures... My dad and I really enjoy watching all your videos! They are so great... Maybe you could be the new Huell Howser lol :) ... I miss that guy & you would be 👍
I do to.
I think I'll pick up where he left off, with my own style. Might take awhile....
blancolirio... that would be great.. :). Whatever you decide to do, I know it will be awesome!
blancolirio I miss Huell too... Agree with Megan that you'd do just as well as Huell did, with your own flair of course 😉
What a gorgeous gorge! Love the photos, the music, and the reporting! Thank you, Juan!
"Springtime in Northern California." Indeed, and what a winter it has been. Opening shot of wildflowers magnificent. Excellent reportage.
An excellent report once again! Thank you for doing such a good job on reporting the facts of what is happening!
I just Juant to thank you on the excellent updates, you are number Juan
Thanks for your updates Juan, fine presentation with a high standard of technical content, you make it easy understandible and pleasant listining.
I keep following your continueing reporting.
Thanks Juan. For those wondering about the seepage from the main dam wall maybe you could get pics to confirm weather or not there is seepage. Good Job.
Thanks for keeping us informed on the progress with Oroville dam.
it's going to be interesting to compare those pictures with the ones after they use the spillway again!
Really enjoy your video series. Thank you.
I've enjoyed all of your episodes of Oroville Dam. thank you for the knowledge and the entertainment :-)
Love your reporting style. Detailed facts and explanations that are easy to follow. I wish our news organizations would follow your lead.
Thanks much Juan! ... great images. Wish you could get a couple of shots right up the ravine.
He got *fantastic* shots unlike anything available of the spillway, which have been lacking frorm DWR for a week - pictures that show the upper SW is holding up well enough for this summer.. The ravine is irregular - it is impossible without a drone to look up the ravine.
Agreed. The DWR should have had released drone footage on the 28th of March. No reason not too.
I hope to get in that ravine this summer...
Thank you for all the work you have done. You are the go to guy !!
Thank you.
Thanks blancolirio. Been watching you since February and yours is the BEST reporting by far. From a fellow pilot. Great work!
good job. looking forward to see what comes from their analysis.
It’s been amazing watching the repair work being done and as of today 29/Oct/2017 they have "almost" made flat the whole slipway.....awesome work.
thank you for all the hard work! looking forward to updates when ever they come!
Thanks Juan. I had not seen any footage upstream from the spillway since the latest release, and was concerned about that hillside. It looks like they're starting to bench it down, which makes me feel better. Great reporting, but that's to be expected from a fellow former USAF!

Thank you, Juan. It appears that DWR has it's head out of it's behind and is doing the best engineering possible. About time for California to take care of it's infrastructure!
we'll find out soon...
If you keep reporting the public interest is kept alive, which increases the chance that something will be done.
More this afternoon at the press DWR conference
This is what real reporting of news and current events could and should be like. Kudos Mr. Brown
It's a pleasure to be informed by you.
Thanks once again Juan from the other side of the planet where we watch with great interest this extraordinary disaster and engineering conundrum. Great reporting once again, time to hang up your wings and take up one of those information officer jobs😁
Great job Juan. I look forward to your almost daily reports and yourconcise information. Thanks for posting all this coverage.
Wonderful job. Lots of good information. Look forward to hearing about the upcoming report.
Maybe you could do the DWR PR position one day a week. You sure would be great at it.
Great independent reporting Juan. This is much needed these days. Will be following your storry for some time in the future.
Thank you Juan. This was a great update on the spillway. Looking forward to seeing what you are going to report on next.

Juan, you've done a wonderful job reporting on this crisis. I think the networks will be looking to hirer you away from your day job. Thanks for your diligence.
thanks JB great report! Yes what will we see next? Can you take us flying in your cool old plane? Thank you for your time.
Good thing I watched the whole report! I had a question and you answered it before I hit comment.

The problem being how many years will it take to replace that spillway.
From one Northern Californian to another......................I patiently wait for your report. Great job Juan.
nice lens. good resolution on those.
Shotcrete held up pretty well ! Better get that new creves just after spi;; way taken car of before next release !
I wonder what they will do short term with the area that you circled in red?
we'll know soon...
Thanks for all your reporting!
I'm sure you could find a story there.
thx, another good Juan!
My brother brought up that there are problems with the structural integrity of the power plant itself.
supporting evidence? otherwise it's just more hearsay.
Pray tell WHAT do you know about the structural integrity of the power plant?
I will bow out of this caffullel and let the evidence present itself in its own good time!
DWR very nearly lost the entire Hyatt Power plant to flooding during this event...
Twentypdr Parrott I have no doubt that Juan knows more about the power plant than you or your brother. Go back and watch all of Juan's reports. Much better than any official new organization.
Thanks JB. Great report. Can we go flying in your cool old plane? Love the trail clearing vid!
