    Interesting to watch for an old time So-Cal pilot. Once upon a time, the routing would have been, VNY - radar vectors V-186, intercept POM 164R, Prado, direct. Take you under (or over) the LAX finals, and then turn-n-dump into LGB. Thanks for the ride-along, Rich... enjoyed the flight.

    Good stuff right there. There’s a big difference between currency & proficiency. And you absolutely can’t put a price on experience. Having you in the right seat was not only a smart move but also very reassuring for the other pilot. Your expertise was invaluable on that short hop. Great video Rich.

    Great point about the squawk and a careful point to consider: readbacks aren't get out of jail free cards. In this case, a squawk is no big deal, but if you read back a heading or altitude wrong, and ATC didn't catch it, you still get violated. Readbacks are a safety courtesy, not legally protecting.

    Caught the squawk code 4712 from the Controller and no correction when you readback 4711. Thought tower would correct it before Takeoff. But Departure caught it straight away. Really cool video. Van Nuys is always a tricky airport to depart from even when you're VFR.

    Fantastic video Rich. When training for my instrument ticket my CFII took me to VNY several times to gain exposure to the complexity and speed with which things can happen when departing there. Of course each time I departed in a C172 I was given the fairly straight forward ADAMM THREE DP heading toward PDZ on a return to CRQ. Even so, as an instrument student it was stressful.

    Thanks Rich…love the videos. I enjoy recreating these flights and flying them in the sim world. Quick procedural question concerning the Newhall1 DP that you discuss in the video. You discuss the left turn to 313 during the pre-flight briefing. Isn’t that turn only executed in the event of lost comms and the normal procedure would be vectors to IPIHO? Thanks again for all the great content.

    • @FlyingwithRich
      @FlyingwithRich  3 года назад +3

      It’s runway HDG until 2.2DME VNY then left turn to heading 113 for radar vectors for IPIHO. The clearance is Newhall1 TWINE then as filed. From my perspective, that gets confusing if you don’t load a transition (HEC or DAG) which are not mentioned in clearance and/or delete the wrong waypoints, you could turn right instead of left. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

    Hi, I am in high school, and my dream is to be a pilot and I am a little confused. Can you explain to me the flight plan with Way points at 1:42? Like instead of connecting all these way points from KVNY to KLGB, why can't you just make 1 straight line flight path from KVNY to KLGB? Hope you understand what I mean by this. Thanks! :)

    • @FlyingwithRich
      @FlyingwithRich  3 года назад +1

      Good question, mostly due to airspace and traffic flows. There are some large airports close by with lots of traffic arriving and departing so ATC has to keep all of that straight and use known routes and traffic flows. If we were in less crowded airspace, we could go direct from one airport to the next. Thanks for watching!

    I guess due to having flown out of KVNY for close to a decade now, I don't feel the Newhall dep proc is all that tricky. Where a lot of pilots make mistakes is knowing what to do with the MANSEQ in the system. We see a lot of pilots on the CANOG dep, turning erroneously for IPIHO (LOST COM ONLY ON CANOG). MANSEQ is "Manually Sequenced" meaning ATC will verbally turn you to a heading and altitude assignment. C'est la Vie, I suppose the ease I have here is due to familiarity. Another airport I hear pilots bone up the dep is KSMO off RWY 21 when they turn to intercept the LAX Radial rather than turning to the correct HDG.

    • @FlyingwithRich
      @FlyingwithRich  3 года назад +1

      Confusion I see is the DP joined to a TEC and a fix that could lead you to a right turn instead of left. Thanks for the message and watching!

    • @FlyingwithRich
      @FlyingwithRich  2 года назад

      Not sure I follow exactly what you are saying, but I always enter the cleared route in the FMS because they could always clear you to a fix or leg on that route - fixes/legs progress quickly on that flight.

      @@FlyingwithRich to avoid the issue of having the FMS command an unwanted turn to the right..... I'm really asking is will any fix that is less than 180 left of the runway heading result in a climbing left turn on departure?

      LA is one of the few places that has TEC routes (I think) so when combined with a SID gets complicated based on the clearance. It boils down to turning left or right initially off runway heading - turning the wrong way gets ATCs attention quickly!

      @Philip this isn't a Part 121 operation... If you can't multi-task enough to have a conversation while taxing a mile to the runway you're probably unfit to fly. They briefed the departure plenty enough to have a little chat before departure. You should refrain from your smart armchair comments and take better care of your toes and not upload such disgusting content to RUclips.
