When I lived and worked around there, there was a local saying: "Live in Hope... Die in Caergwrle"...
As a fellow local, I've definitely heard this on more than one occasion
LOL
That is amazing
Mae'r 230au yn well na'r 197au
@@NickBadley - I suspect it was a follow on from the saying "One can but live in hope!"
I remember the IT failure. I went to Chester that day. Completely missed all the disruption though. Arrived before it happened, left after it had been sorted. If it wasn't on the news, I would have never noticed
I noticed, I had a doctor's appointment and I had to leave school but when I got there they told us it was cancelled and it was soooooo annoying
No major disruption to the traffic in Belgium, that day, but all ticket sales channels were disrupted that day, basically making it free to travel for a lot of people...
Thanks Nick. I've had the same problem with staff not knowing how to issue a 2 or 3 zone version of the rover as you and others have had reading the comments. I've ended up stumping up the full £42 for an all zone ticket before. Whilst waiting for a train at Chester earlier this year, I asked how to get a 2 or 3 zone version and there is a written procedure on how to issue such tickets at the ticket office. Using the STAR ticketing system, choose anywhere to anywhere option, then enter the starting station in one of the zones and then the destination as a coded zone(s). The destination codes are: Zone A=J433, Zone C=J435, Zone D=J436, Zone F=J437, Zone G=J434, Zone M=J438, Zone W=J439. The zones correspond with the zones of the rover. For example, if you wanted a 2 zone rover to cover between Chester (zone W) and the Borderlands line (zone F), then it would Chester to J437.
0:46 loving the Geoff Marshall style “walk away from camera” shot! loving the content also btw keep it up:)
"Kind of a shame it did all work out" wins the Most British Statement Of The Day Award
Great to see the improvements to the service. I lived in Wrexham (1955-1969) and my grandfather worked on the railway, Central station used to be a few hundred yards further east but the line was shortened to make room for the retail centre.
We always used to pronounce Caerwrle as 'Caergirlie'
Visited Caergwrle back in the 60s with my brother using rover tickets. We went to see the ruined Caergwrle Castle.
Round about then there was a racehorse called Caergwrle Girl, pronounced "Caergirlie girl" which is how I've always said the place name.
Seems like I've been doing it right!
Shotton is probably one of the oddest stations I have been to. If you're changing from southbound Borderlands line to Shotton Low Level, its probably quicker to get off at Hawarden Bridge and walk across the bridge
Back in the bad old days, the working timetable had a weird quirk whereby the train turning around at Wrexham Central arrived 4 minutes after it had already left - good to see a 45min frequency, suggests that Shotton interchanges will involve a lot less running in future \m/
Ah, the good "tie your sweater around your waist at the sleeves" method. Next escalation stage: wear zip-off cargo pants to change onto short legs mid-trip. I miss those "Schönes Wochenende Ticket" trips (means "nice weekend ticket" and was a flatrate ticket valid a whole weekend or later still a whole Saturday or Sunday for nearly all German local trains, trams, light rails, metros and buses).
Hi nick.
I am a very big fan of your channel and you have motivated me to come out of my comfort zone and record videos for my channel.
Thank you
Amazing video as always. Your planning abilities are exceptional and your videos are so lovely and positive
Its might be a massive, also for the next next possible Point to Point video, with Hope (Flintshire) - Hope (Derbyshire) ??
Using the British Railways Map on Merritt Cartographic I noticed a sequence of local stations all managed by different by different operators.
Ellesmere Port to Helsby is under 8.5km, around 5 and a quarter miles and in that sequence EP is managed by Merseyrail, then both Stanlow and Thorton, and Ince and Elton are managed by Northern, and Helsby by Transport for Wales. I can't imagine there are many more closer examples of multi-operators. Could be an interesting variation on a video!
You've invented a new Olympic sport - Running Between Stations. Better than dancing horses!
Great video, lovely to see you cover my local station along the way as well
G'Day Nick from Australia. I enjoy your videos. Very well produced.
Part of you would have preferred the line before it was upgraded, where every station was a request stop, a few stations had barrow crossings and there were neither dot matrix nor on train announcements! Plus every train was always late by design due to the train being timetabled to leave Wrexham General for Bidston before it was scheduled to arrive into Wrexham Central! You were very lucky with your on time and early trains! Even with the new service, the line still often suffers from more minor late running and some cancellations!
Wow, a day where everything went on time and smoothy on the Borderlands line.
I go from Wrexham to Buckley and back every week to pick up my son and theres always something going wrong.
My favorite is being abandoned on the side of the main road outside Buckley Station during a strom by Transport for Wales.
You must be the only person travelling that day whose journey all happened as planned! The station in the retail park will at least have retail units that are open beside it. I'm not sure I hole too much hope for the other one!
When you were at Shotton, you should have visited the abandoned ferry.
I do like this line. There used to be a realy nice buffet at Wrexham General. Though i did get a mad bussy class 175 from Gemral to Shrewsbury. . It was Heading to Cardiff Central Frm Manchester Picc and was stuffed
I Was in North wales in July and I had problems getting a 2 zone rover ticket as well
The staff Didn’t have a clue even though I showed then what I wanted
They phoned other stations and Finally got it they said it was a Diffrent name to what we know
I tweeted TFW to look in to it
Perhaps the reason you thought Hawarden was a larger settlement than it is is because of the nearby Hawarden Airport, the home of the Airbus Broughton wing factory. Despite the name, Hawarden airport isn't in Hawarden (its also sometimes known as Chester Airport, and its not in Chester either), it is actually nestled between Broughton, Bretton Saltney Ferry and Sandycroft, with Broughton being the closest settlement, although officially the airport is in Saltney Ferry.
As a side note, it's not uncommon for things in that part of the world to be named after a different settlement to the one its in, as the well known 'Broughton Shopping Park' is actually in Bretton, not Broughton!
Been watching your videos for a long time Nick, inspired me to film trains and explore my local lines, finally decided to pick up a channel membership 🎉
Thank you very much! Happy to have you here!
Brilliant video Nick, I've still not been on the 230's yet. I did hear about that IT outage which did not affect me thankfully.
They could certainly improve the Shotton stations the interchange isn’t the best.
The North Wales Mainline platforms could probably benefit from lengthening and better surface and seating.
When i visited Hope back at the end of last year it was the most painful to get from 1 platform to the other so when you said you had a 3 min connection i didnt think youd make it so fair play for doing so
I had the same problem with the North Wales day rover ticket. I visited the Borderlands Line back in May this year and tried to buy a 2-zones ticket but ended up having to buy an all-zones ticket, which was about £10 more!
Rookie! I've made many 2 minute connections! 🤣
Try make a 2min connection at man Piccadilly from the concourse to 13+14 lol
Hi Nick I watch Ur vids all the time love them I do have a pointless journey suggestion, Pontefract baghill to monkhill or either way round it's only a suggestion. Keep up vids tho.
When I lived in Upminster I probably rode every one if the trains that they have refurbished
living near wrexham and having gone from general before...very trippy seeing this video
Absolutely loved that video Nick you went past my old Nans house on one of your walks hope you can do a Wrwxham General - Wrexham General pointless video one day
Had a 4pm flight out of Luton on that day which finally took off at 1030pm due to those electrical issues 😭
"Run Nicky run!"
You should go to Mount pleasant crossing- aka one of the Busiest crossings in the UK
Great vlog as always Nick & have you done the island line with the 3rd rail 230s i was able to visit Long Marston before Vivarail ceasing trading
Great video!
What about doing the Class 231 on the Rhymney line
Did anybody take you on over calling Vivarail D-trains (former) tube trains?
Great video
Feb 2025. If you want to travel on a 230 between Greenford and West Ealing due to a lack of Driver Training they will only run on Thurs and Fridays
Your hope joke was hopeless. I'll get my coat.
I Was on the train he was there! Just did not see him.
I never new this was a line😅
Next time you do Merseyrail love to meet up and take part in the merseyrail day
Wow a 197 on the borderlands line?
It is a pity they did not keep the pick up shoes on the 230's I am sure the line would receive far more passengers id the trains continued aroiund th Liverpool Loop.
Gwersyllt is said g-weer-salt. Ik that bc I live there.
hi nick i help out at hawarden station do you knwo when you will be there next cause i was there when you where there i dont suppose your saw a kid in a yellow hi vis

I like scruffy unshaven Nick. I'm curious to see how Nick would look with a full beard.
Fourth one here, wow! Keep up the great work Nick
Still need to ride the Borderlands Line but a great video Nick
Are Transport for Wales started using the Class 197 Civity as well the Class 230 on the Borderlands Line.
Pointless journey: East Garforth to Garforth
