First Apple pressing of the year!

  • As you may know we've had a lot of strong winds recently here in the UK, and thus I had a lot of windfall apples (and pears too). When I retired last April I gifted myself an apple 'scratter' or mill and a 20 litre hydropress so I could be self-reliant when it comes to cider making.
This was my first opportunity to 'road test' the equipment and I am more than happy!!!
that juice is now being fermented (follow up video) into hard cider - it otherwise would have been wasted. I will do one or two more videos on the process.
    thanks for watching :-)

I'm so jealous! I have for many years wanted to grow apples, but the only apple that can take our seasons is crabapple. Our winters are to short, and our summers are to long, hot and humid. There are a couple hybrids that will make small sour apples, not worth the space.

      Oh that's a challenge!
I guess that I take it for granted that I can grow apples here very easily. I feel your pain.
I suppose on the other foot, there's things you can grow easily which I couldn't?
Thanks so much for stopping by 👍👍

Self sufficiency in the process of "Scrump" sounds Ideal to me mate. I'm doing it all wrong, I need to retire and buy myself some of that kit instead of working to buy my booze :-) LOL! 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍺

Nice one bud 12.5ltr of juice can't be bad from what would of been wasted, the press and scratter did well. Didn't realise it was water pressure that did it, I thought you was dancing in the video but it's the wasps you was try to get. Yeah nice sound but not good if you want a pee.

    • @cumbrianhomestead

Hi Steve, I was very happy to get that juice mate ( it's fermenting well, video to come). The bloody wasps were terrible nuisance 😠😠
Hydropress is really good, easy to use and effective.
      Cheers mate 🍺👍

Concratulation with new apple press equipment. It seems to work well and you squeezed all the apples in no time.
I only have a manual press and a manual apple grinder, so it takes a lot of time. Looks like you've squeezed out a lot more juice than I manage with my manual apple press.
I think I have to invest in an apple grinder like that.
Is the apple press driven by water pressure?
I have tons of fall fruit, but haven't pressed anything so far. The apples have gone on the compost, I just have not had the time.
    Interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
    All the best my friend🍏🍎

    • @cumbrianhomestead
      @cumbrianhomestead  5 лет назад +1

Hi Benni, I can recommend both the mill and the press.
The hydropress works of mains water pressure ( 3 bar maximum) you can obtain different sizes, but the 20 litre works well for me.
I know what you mean about not having the time; before I retired my fruit would also go on the compost heap, so it's a very nice feeling to now be able to utilize it.
Take care and have a great evening my friend 👍❤️

Hello and thank you for your kind comments.
It's a "hydropress" - works off mains water pressure. You can find them on eBay.
      Best wishes 👍

A superb piece of kit mate, I assume the scratter works similar to a chipper????? Would like to see more how the hydro press works, a lot easier than screwing down a manual one 👍😀

    • @cumbrianhomestead
      @cumbrianhomestead  5 лет назад +1

Cheers mate: yes, the scratter or mill works like a chipper and is all stainless steel (so won't react to the acidic fruit juice).
The hydropress is an extremely good piece of kit and works off mains water pressure.
I'll be doing a further video on this so will enable a closer look.
      Cheers mate 🍺👍👍

      Hi Laurie, yes 😀
It will become what I believe you guys call "hard cider". In the UK it's just known as Cider.
