When I first decided to buy an SUV, I had my eyes on the Denali or the Navigator. I thought there was no way any other SUV would compare. Then I drove them and went MEH. I happen to see a 2003 Sequoia for sale and took it for a spin. Bought it right then and there (2006) . Flash forward to 2010, I was T-boned by a Toyota going over 40 MPH right into my driver door. Broke the frame and I had to be cut out of the SUV. Minor soreness in the back but no major injuries. The 72 year old lady who hit me got out of her car just fine. I bought a 2006 Sequoia as soon as I got my settlement. The firefighters flat out said had I been driving almost anything else (my work truck was a Frontier I had just dropped off), I would most likely be dead. I drive that 2006 to this day with the ONLY issue having been that damn back latch, now twice, lol. I LOVE that SUV.

Loved my dads 2001 Sequoia. It Took us all over the USA/Canada when we were little, very comfortably and reliable. It has over 800k miles today. Original engine and transmission and AC. The rear trunk went out around 350k / and the window motors went out every 350-400k
Minor leaks near the transmission/ engine around 350k miles. 8-12 mpg tho, my father would take out the rear seats to see near 16-17mpg.

We bought a new 2008 Sequoia in March, 2009. The Houston area dealerships were overflowing with Sequoias due to the 2008 financial crisis. They were almost giving them away. We kept it for 11 years / 125K miles, and only had one issue that had to be repaired under warranty. All other repairs were normal maintenance. We traded in for a 2020 Platinum Sequoia since my wife won’t drive anything else.

My wife and I bought our 2005 Limited 4X4 Sequoia in Desert Sand Metallic off the showroom floor. We raised our family in our Sequoia, and it has itself become a member of the family. Ours only has 260,000 miles on it. Still runs like it did when it was new. It has so much sentimental value now... I'll never part with it, even as the maintenance costs exceed the book value. We've kept up on all preventive maintenance, and it has been dead reliable. Just now it is starting to show some wear in some of the suspension parts, but those are easily replaced and not budget breaking.
My only gripe is I wish it had just one more gear for highway driving here in the mountain states.

Yes! Get one before they die. Our 2010 5.7L V8 Platinum has 177,800ish miles and has cost us hardly anything during ownership. I did the math and since we paid the vehicle off it is only cost me $82 a month to own this vehicle in repairs and maintenance combined.
Another reason you should buy this vehicle is do not forget your kids will be adult-sized teenagers one day. My wife and I have four children, and when we bought the Sequoia we had two kids and one on the way. We have four and the oldest is now 16, 14, and my 16-year-old is 6'2" and my 14-year-old is 6'0". The next three are going to be tall too we can tell already.
So, the Sequoia offers you something that the minivans and other SUV's just can't and that's the ability to have a vehicle filled with adult-sized people, have the power you need when fully loaded to pull in and out of traffic, and big enough to go on a vacation without pulling a trailer behind you.
MPG is the last thing we worry about especially when friends of ours have Yukon XL's and get essentially the same thing we do which is 14 city and 17-18 highway.
We will be driving this Sequoia until the kids all leave the house, so I expect another 10-15 years of use with no worries.

Thank you, AMD. I learned about fuel efficiency from road tests of the IH Scout II (1971-1980). The choice of engines did not matter much, the 4-196, V8-304, V8-345, V8-392, and even the Nissan diesel all burned about the same amount of fuel in that heavy vehicle. Airplanes are the same, to move weight requires fuel, and fuel also adds weight. Cast iron block engines were not as today's engines, either (and didn't warm up as fast, though they did provide more warmth than an air-cooled VW)... 🤘Mahalo and Mele Kalikimaka, Hauoli Makahiki Hou 2022!

Also wanted to add, it comes with 4:30 gears standard like the 2nd gen tundra, which contributes to the low mpg but this thing tows and can get off the line like a beast. The Torsen differential is nice in 4x4 HI, no binding on dry pavement, so my wife leaves it on all the time in the winter, but I engage it and disengage it from time to time. You can lock the center differential if you need to. Tightest turning radius in its class so parking is a breeze. Thanks so much for this video, it’s really coming at the right time for me. I have owned a 2003 Sequoia, the 5.8 litre V8 for over 8 years and I bought it off a friend who’s had it for longer. It’s done over 200,000 km and I have been under pressure from my company to get it changed as it doesn’t fit with my position as a top executive of the company. But I love my old sequoia and though it’s all banged up and needs a spray job, I actually love the faded sun bleached grays on the roof and the sides contrasting with the original slightly faded black. The company went ahead and bought me a Honda Pilot, 2018 I think, and just one look, I immediately turned it down, and we finally agreed to upgrade to another sequoia, a newer model but not later than the 2010 as I still feel the older models are the most rugged and reliable. I am hanging on to my original 2003 model (as it drives as beautifully still now as when I bought it, have not even had to open the engine once, except for routine service and oil change) and though it’s all faded / bleached to gray, I love the look, makes it look raw and powerful, like a proper tank without a paint job. If I have to spray it all over, it’ll be the same bleached gray. I only hope the newer 2010 model is as good and eventually I’ll end up having two sequoias, albeit the older models, but I feel a strong emotional attachment to my sequoia, it’s taken me everywhere, in all terrain, and without any hint of a struggle. And people don’t just realise how comfortable the sequoia is, whether you are driving it yourself or being driven, it’s a very comfortable and luxurious ride. Coming from someone who’s driven the Mercedes 350 R class (discontinued now I think), the Mercedes’ GL500 and currently the Audi Q7 (I work abroad and these are all the cars my family has driven back home over the years), I feel something different when behind the wheel of the sequoia, like a trustworthy old friend. And my kids and wife love it too when they get the opportunity to visit in the country I work.

I bought a 2012 sequoia with 167000 miles on it and after having my mechanic check it out and did a refresher maintenance he told me I got a great truck. I paid 16000 for it I believe it’s gone up in value due their known quality and recent inflationary issues in our economy. I change the oil myself. 8 quarts! It rides so smooth and is a road warrior. I wish I had bought one years ago. Thanks for your videos. Very informative and entertaining

Competence, confidence, and assurance. After owning my '02 for 4 years and putting 80k miles on it, I can succinctly describe my ownership experience with those three words. Other than the lousy gas mileage (and I can live with that), they are fantastic. As soon as car prices get back to "normal" I'll be looking for another one.

I bought a new 2018 Sequoia SR5 after years of owning 4Runners, lots more space for my hunting dogs and gear, big powerfull V8 for towing my 1860 duck boat and not that much difference in MPG, I changed the shocks out to 5100 Bilstiens, added TRD sway bars and BFG AT/KO's, I'll be retiring in 2 years and this is my forever hunting rig. This is the last Toyota that still has the Torsen center diff that can be locked and drivin in AWD on dry pavement or unlocked and driven as a rear wheel drive like my older 4Runners, the 2010 and newer T4R Limiteds that I had were AWD only, the rest and the Tundra are old school part time units.

We just bought a 2022 Sequoia Sport because of the heavy-duty tow package to pull our boat. We absolutely LOVE it!! The old school tech and look doesn't bother me at all. Actually the learning curve from my 2005 4Runner Sport to this brand new Sequoia was pretty much a non-issue. The hardest thing to overcome was that all of the Sequoia options were not available in all the models. This Sport model did not offer upgraded stereo, power fold-down third row seats, even no leather! Come on Toyota, offer all the options to all your models! We added a leather seat package after market so that is nice! And had the heated seats added with it as well. We'll see with the stereo if we really want to upgrade later on. All in all, like I said, we LOVE this rig and will have it many, many years!!

I’ve heard through another RUclips channel that the 6th Gen 4R will be all new for the 2023 model year. It will be on the new TNGA F platform. It will be slightly larger and slightly lighter. It will have a turbo gas inline 4 with about 280 HP which will go on sale in December of 2022. There will be a series hybrid inline 4 with a combined 260 HP. The gas and hybrid will use a 10 speed automatic. Eventually there will be a prime model with well over 300 HP. Expect a starting price just under the Tundra.

We got it for $44,500. Less than 4Runner’s in my area. I think for the money we found it, we got a great deal. This car is in new condition and we love it!!! I don’t drive much so I fill it almost every two weeks. The kids love the space. We came off an 06 highlander with 200k miles. I had it for 12 years. I’m hoping to get more years out of the sequoia. AMD is 100% correct! We had a 2014 Toyota Sequoia with the flex-fuel and we traded it in for a 2019 with a straight 5.7 L. We loved it so much we bought a ‘21 Tundra 4WD TRD Sport (they’re basically the exact same vehicle - one has a pick-up bed and the other has a third row with a roof). That 5.7 L and 6-speed trans. will be going away in the 2023 Sequoia for a 3.5 L V6 TwinTurbo (the exact same engine that is in the ‘22 Tundra). I highly recommend, if you are looking for one, I would get the ‘22 model year or older. When the turbos break, a lot of things break with them and they cost a fortune to fix. The 5.7 L and 6-speed trans. are excellent.

Sounds like I'm in a similar situation. I'm planning to get a '22 Sequoia now and keep it for about 3-4 years. If the dismal gas mileage and "old school" architecture and tech become a major issue we'll trade it in for the all-new Sequoia. It will have been out for several years by that point and any reliability issues should be well known.

    • @MichaelThomas-nv9rd
      @MichaelThomas-nv9rd 2 года назад

If you are looking for something that has been tried and true for over a decade in both the Sequoia and the Tundra, and you want unmistaken reliability, I would get a model year 22 or older. We all will assume that Toyota has done its homework on that 3.5 L V6 and that it will be just as reliable. That 3.5 L V6 TwinTurbo debuted in 2017 with the LS 500; a luxury vehicle versus it being used in a heavy, heavy Sequoia or a Tundra that potentially goes off road and/or hauls heavy loads. Go with the 5.7 L.

Space on the dash is abundant because the screen is ridiculously small for an $80,000 truck (Canadian price). The radio should be oriented to the driver. Passengers can take their eye off the road an lean over a bit. Driver's should have everything they need to interact with close at hand.
