The theory I always thought was probably accurate is that at least one of the bullets was from an impulsive shot fired back at Oswald from a Secret Service agent, and that the cover-up was to avoid embarrassment at the friendly-fire incident. So not a conspiracy to kill Kennedy and Connelly, but a conspiracy to hide the Secret Service's mistake in trying to protect them.
