Hi ! A very good video, I'm a PhD in comp neuro, and I highly recommend to everyone to look for Neuromatch Academy, I was a TA on it last year, those resources are world class and free, so hopefully in some re edition of this video, those can be added, basically that summer school relate everything you showed in your video in a cohesive way. Try to take a look at it.
Just asking, i am not in the position of doing PhD because i messed up in my master's.
Does computational neuroscience/etc has a scope for master's research assistant?
Stop spamming
@@dvdharkin huh?
That's true
I dont believe you
For the machine learning and mathematics part "Mathematics for machine learning" is a free textbook that teaches you the math (linear algebra, multivariate calc and some geometry) and the stats (regression) plus some common algorithms (with jupyter notebooks available with worked examples). So it's a nice general overview of the entire things for those short on time
Thanks for the reference!
This book is simply amazing. I wish it covered more topics.
Thanks for advice
Thank you. Added to my ever growing anti-library.
Can also vouch for this book, its brilliant!
First time on this channel and this is the kind of content we need to see spreading in RUclips and other social media plattforms. Please, keep doing this great work and thanks for spend time moving this channel forward!
I recognized so many of these recommendations! I totally agree with you on all of them :) Thank you so much!
Just found your channel and I like the quality of your videos. Hope to see more from you!
This is a great video. It randomly popped up on my recommended page and it is put together really well and very informative!
I'm doing a self study starting with bishop and there is so much to learn if one wants to try to enable AGI. Thanks for making this video accessible and sharing resources.
This channel is amazing!! Please keep up with the good work! Thank you for introducing me to such an amazing topic!
I have been really confused on a career path for the longest of time.
Seeing this video gave me some sort of clarity that i cant even explain.
Thank you so much
Thank you very much for the content, there are not many of this type on yt. I have a background in Biology, and my dilemma was which programming language to stick with. It's becoming clear to me now! In particular I am getting into neural signals, I hope you make a related video!
I am both sadden and glad this does not have millions of views. then again it's only been 15 days and it's already at 64 thousand. Thank you so so so much for making this video. The hardest problem for the novice in any topic, in my experience, is to be able to distinguish the skills they need to learn from the advertisements of tools or experience they should be paying for. I will be applying this knowledge in my own search for meaning. Thank you :D
Excellent recommendations. It is a very complete set of books. Personally I would add the classic book From Neuron to Brain, which just last year they released the sixth edition.
I am also a student of neuroscience. Best regards from Mexico 🇲🇽
*You are great creator, keep bringing the academic insides and spreading the information so that one can prepare himself before joining a phd program*
Finally a channel about Computational Neuroscience I was looking for! Thanks for great intro into the topic! I'm doing my Bachelors at the moment in CS and this guide will help me a lot with choosing what to learn outside my school priorities. Thanks!
Fills a gap here at youtube. Thanks so much for putting the effort for producing this video. Hope seeing your channel grow. Best regards :-)
A very well presented summary for folks starting up on this. I got a lot from this. You have a cheerful personality which helped me not get afraid of the huge skills mentioned here haha! Thanks.
Hi Charlotte, A Huge thank you for your work on RUclips. I am CS person. But I am really amused by Human Brain and Dreams. I was kind a 'where to start' state, since I thought that I have to re-read entire neuros, in-spite of schedule. It helped. Thank you , ❤
Omg YESSSSS thank you! I’ve been just starting to get into it bc I’ve been loving learning about predictive modeling
I am surprised, why does this channel has so less subscribers, it should have a million. Great video!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much for making this!
OMG, I have read your papers on normative modelling before, thank you for sharing the experience!
Thank god, someone finally made a video about it. May your efforts get rewarded
Yo thank you for the video, also ty to everybody for sharing all of your great resources for others to use. The best part of learning of is the community, and this video + comment section is proof of that.
Great video! Keep it up :) I am a first year PhD student using machine learning on neural data and this video is super comprehensive for anyone trying to get into the field.
I’m a full time data scientist and I took the course Fundamentals of statistics that were mentioned in the video. That’s a pretty tough course, you must have a good foundation in multivariate calculus and linear algebra. Besides, it is a highly theoretical course, so if you wanna experiment something more practical don’t go for it.
However, if your intention is to fill the statistics gap, I strongly recommend it. Moreover, I should mention that there is another course considered a pre requisite for this one. It is called “probability: the science of uncertainty and data”, which is also from MIT and available on EdX.
With these two courses, you are capable of dealing with any problem in statistics in a theoretical approach.
Cara tem linkedin? Também sou da área de ciência de dados, curso pela FATEC, comecei ano passado. Ainda não trabalhei mas prefiro absorver mais conteúdos para então poder me candidatar aos estágios.
Bro how you become data scientist. Please tell. Please please
Thankyou for the Information :) Can you also mention a few more necessary courses to be done online for Data Science and Data Analysis ? I have done a few from Edx already and I am an aspiring Data Analyst & Scientist
@@jonathanjabes1477 same here , I am still in the learning phase and wish to know the relevant courses to learn from , and projects to get to work with
@Alexandre Henrique: Can you recommend any sources or courses about statistics you've taken. I'm working in healthcare and want to become a biostatistician so I'm looking for some statistics courses. Thank you so much.
It is amazing how you guys have the daunting task of deciphering the brain’s commands of all these diverse functions and neuroscience field has made enormous progress over the years and Scientists continue to strive for a deeper understanding of how the brain’s 100 billion nerve cells are born, grow, and connect and just to know how these goes into effective, functional circuits that usually correlate into the working order for life.
Bishop was the second book i bought when studying Machine Learning on my own....what an awesome book....👍
My new favorite RUclips channel❤🙏🏾 thanks for sharing!!!
Great video quality: conciseness, topics approached, list of references. Beatiful!
Hey, thanks a lot! You gave a good overview, now it doesnt look so impossible anymore :D
Love this video! Thanks for pointing out specific starting points and tips! :)
your video combined all of my goals into one video!
at the moment i am studying computer science, in the future i am planning to study physics
i also wanted to study neuroscience to some extent, to be able to understand concepts of computers better…
thank you
I am so grateful for this video. I’m trying to learn neuroscience on my own and I really want PhDs to lay out the path for people like myself to attain that expertise without school. I’ll follow your path. Bless you.
Trying to get back into this after a few years. 4 minutes in and this seems like a promising video.
I did my bachelor's in electrical and electronics engineering and I am pursuing my masters in big data. Machine learning is an aspect of it so this information really helps. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much for the tips. I am currently doing a bachelor’s in physics and computer science, but am unsure whether I want to pursue higher education in Theoretical physics or Applied computer science or Applied discrete mathematics 🤕. To those about to start their bachelor’s, keep in mind that interests change a lot, so take as many diverse courses as possible. Build up skills rather than a set- in- stone degree.
Bedankt voor de fantastische aanmoediging in het begin van de video: het is 2022 en je kunt alles leren.
Het neemt blokkades weg en het stelt mij ten doel om te gaan leren.
THIS IS A VERRRRYYY INFORMATIVE VIDEO!! THANK YOU!
Currently in my 2nd year of my physics degree, this looks like something really cool that I might look into doing
So glad you take neuroscience as your channel topic! Nice video!
so glad that u r posting this content and so glad that I came across this channel..I'm from a non-science background ..developed interest in neuroscience coz a book about it fell on me whilst I was at the library researching about Nazism and psychology ..intend to do a MSc in psychology n thn go to grad school for neuro hopefully...this video was super helpful! Cant thank you enough! It is so hard to navigate is all n knw about the resources available when u don't hv a background in science n never heard about neuroscience in school.
I'm doing that course by Andrew NG it is really good even if it is somehow old but it is still relevant ... it gives you whole mathematical background about machine learning and data science
I am very grateful that I have found your video. Very helpful!
I really loved this video. I'm a medicine student interested in neurophysiology, and I like the idea of mixing machine learning, electroencephalography and evoked potentials. This will help me a lot. For the neuroscience subject I'd also recommend Kandel's Principles of Neural Science.
Great video! I wish someone would have told these at the beginning of my PhD
Wow, thank you. I am taking pre-medical program (Biology). Thank you for the tips and learnings. I want to learn more how to communicate and link life science to the people outside my program.
thanks for the info! i will always love R over Python because the way you can perform logic & arithmetic across entire arrays (series? vectors?) is just so much faster and more intuitive
Cool content! I'm more interested on a academic career rather than becoming another entrepreneur, and it's good to see so many options to pursue in my field 😁.
videos like these are the most useful kind on youtube, probably. I promise I'll look into it when I finish university prep...
It's great and helpful. Thank you very much. I love your content and your voice
Lovely lovely video, i think anyone can enjoy it and look up for more about all you explained, thx !
I really appreciate it... CNS is very vast area and I didn't know your tips.
Wow. I didn’t know this field of specialization has become a bit mainstream. Happy to see the confluence of neuro science, programming and math. Doing just ML feels very dry so this field seems very interesting.
:D Bedankt!
This video simplifies my confusion to workable levels. Thank you, Charlotte.
This is the kind of content I want to see youtube. More. Thanks Charlotte.
wonderful video I'm currently halfway into a masters in neuroscience and education and want transition into this!
been interested in neuroscience for years and am a cs student. was trying to find a field that blended the two, but was disappointed to learn most stuff for it in academia was masters and up. so glad to see this video.
Same here , been interested in neuroscience and noetic sciences and I am cs student , trying to find a way to connect the two , and yes , it mostly can be found as you go higher up for masters and so on , still , its interesting :)
I am auto-didacting for computational neuroscience and I use many of the same resources. I also talked to Huberman a few years ago about his work.
McKay’s book is fantastic if you have a physics background, or if you prefer physical/intuitive explanations alongside mathematical ones.
I checked your all videos and I love it! More video, please :))
We use R in my biology bachelor's programme, maybe I'll give this a try now that I already have some basic knowledge. If there is anything I've learned in uni it's that if you know where to get quality learning material, nothing is preventing you from learning all this on your own basically for free. All uni does is providing a "guided tour", although to be fair the practical courses will be hard to organise for people learning on their own. Thank you for all the info!
Love this video. Thank you for it!
My undergrad was in cell & molecular biology with a minor in physics. I took lots of math too. My biggest regret was not taking *any* computer science or programming classes, though. I corrected this as a post-bacc.. I am doing a masters in Data Science now and can attest to the absolute need for R and Python programming skills. In reality, I am not sure you can get to my knowledge level with a few bootcamps online. You can supplement, for sure. But you really need the rigor of a course, imho, to at least start your self-learning process. The Bishop book is indeed awesome. The David McKay has the class he uses that book for online, btw, right here on RUclips. Computational neuroscience is definitely an interest of mine. We shall see what kind of doors open once I complete this Data Science MS.
Hi, Charlotte! I would highly recommend everyone interested in Computational Neuroscience to get their hands on Statistical Mechanics, as whole brain modes are based on the extension of spiking neuron models to the Thermodynamic Limit.
Once there, the study of Phase Portraits, Stability, Critical Exponents, Phase Transitions and so on is found and applied everywhere.
It also builds up the bases for neural networks and dimensionality reduction algorithms.
I am a librarian
And i found it very useful for my user community 💞💞💞💞
Thankyou so much
I'm just starting my educational journey into biochemistry, with the goal of getting into neuroscience one day. I think this randomly suggested video is about to change my life.
I'm in this Field....your video is very informative for everyone wanting to enter this field...good job
Thank you! I know im late, but there's very few good "getting started" most videos are either to towards the beginning or assume way to much knowledge, this video was perfect!
Charlotte Fraza, Many thanks for your videos. I was an Algebra-1 teacher in Los Angeles. Knowing how to increase student attention and Restesting after thorough reviews of only major unit tests created the only As(19) and Bs(34) in my 8th Grade Algebra-1 dept of 4 teachers who did not retest but were superior teachers to me. It may be like iteration of AI computer data. I know SPSS and am learning Python to teach it online for free and Algebra-1 using an approved CA Algebra-1 book but with different problem examples I will create. I look forward to all your future videos. Again, Many Thanks for me and the thousands of kids who will benefit from any free Algebra-1 course I can find and publicize while I develop mine. Peace
Hi. I'm a MSc. in molecular biology and genetics. I wanna be Phd student the neuroscience. It was a very useful video. And now I'm also learning python thats it.☺️
A very good video. Basically, these suggestions apply to anything “computational or modeling” - finance, neuro, economics, marketing, physics, etc, only the last part changes according to the area. Nowadays everything becomes datafied.
Yeesssss! This is exactly what I've been looking for!
I got in RUclips waiting for knowledge to follow my path in Neuroscience. Thank you!
thank you for your video, I am a chemical engineering who is trying to find her way but now it's pretty clear for me that computational neuroscience it's pretty cool and I want to pursue a master in this, Thank you
as a self-taught dev, i wanna see more self-study resources on sciences particularly neuroscience. there's already so much content for programming
A clever ,polite, amenable woman that gives value. Useful video.
Great video! Thank you for making it
Computational Neuroscience sounds so cool! I was never really into it, but I think now could be a good time to start!
@Meu Deus é Fiel Why not?
I'm doing my PhD in statistical mechanics. I don't have any biological background, but I think computational neuroscience is a very interesting subject. I really want to study it and I will start with your recommendations! Thanks.
Amazing video, would be cool if you could eventually create content in those specific areas!
Thank you so much i really appreciate this :').
Thanks for giving such great insights and tips
i really admire ppl you who are so intelligent and are good at science. i wish i was just as smart as you 😊
Thanku so much, this is very helpful
Thanks for the nice video. For the physics part I would suggest the "Neural Dynamics" book by W. Gerstner and also Dynamical Systems in Neuroscience by E. Izhikevich.
Yes good call, I even have the Dynamical systems book lying around somewhere!
I agree. Griffiths' Electrodynamics are for upper division physics and I wouldn't recommend it to people who hasn't done electrostatics and relativity yet. The book requires strong calculus 3 and vector calculus skills too.
EM Purcell's E&M book is great for beginners, because it introduces the needed Vector Calculus as it goes and doesn't use it as freely as Griffiths. It's also more wordy than mathematical which beginners might prefer
The Izhikevich book definitely assumes a knowledge of differential equations.
Thanks for this great and useful content. It really encourages.
Intelligence and beauty in a explain about computacional neurocience. Thanks!¡!
great point about getting into reading papers
Yes, pattern recognition and machine learning is a classic. I needed to proof each of the equations there hehe
Excellent! Thank you for this video
Maybe RUclips algorithm is optimized only for the revenue of the company, but man, I am few months before cognitive science masters and after gap year and this video, together with the comments below is some kind of information heaven for my mind right now. Thank you!
I have a master's degree in Neuroscience, and my Bachelor's background is Biology. So, as someone coming from a non-mathematical and non-coding background, I found computational neuroscience pretty daunting. Thank you so much for this video, you really helped simplify my approach towards this subject. Love from India 🇮🇳❤️
hello! I´m a hs student interested in neuroscience, and was curious, if you don´t mind these questions: did you find it hard to find a job? what do you do in your day to day life (i.e. what does a work day look like), or what kind of projects do you / your colleagues work on / roles you perform? Thank you!! I´m trying to get a more day-to-day view on the career :)
@@andreaalminana1794 There are a lot of options for someone from a neuroscience background. There's no one size fits all option. It's very diverse.
All the best!
@@andreaalminana1794 Well, after my Master's in Neuroscience, I did M.Phil. in Cognitive Science. And now I am planning for a PhD in Neurobiology or related field. Neuroscience is a young field and there are plenty of opportunities, but since I wanted to stay in academia and research, I am thinking of PhD and post doc.
@@sarahahamed970 Which college did you go to study all youe degree and post graduate courses in neuroscience?
@@sarahahamed970 hi, do you mind telling about yearly package for a neuroscientist where you live?
Wow, thanks a lot for this super helpful video!!!
I read my first book on the topic literally called "MATLAB for Neuroscientists" on my first year of university... ended up learning both my first programming language as well as getting initiated with computational neuroscience in one go. Strongly recommend if you can find a copy of this book from your local library (or elsewhere).
Loved it, thanks!
Hey Charlotte Fraza , I really like to watch your videos. Your videos gives me lots of knowledge about neuroscience 😄🧠
Excellent resource banking and guide!thank you so much for a fab video
I am a medical student in second grade and I really love anything related to the brain, in addition to programming, and mathematics stuff. And I am really interested in them. And I didn’t know how to combine them. Now I know how ❤️. I will take your video as a reference and I will save it. I am really thankful. You made me so excited 😂❤️
Good tipps I think, I can second all of them. I had the pattern recognition book on my desk for a long time but never read it through :( ... anyways, great job with the video and pointers!
Ever since I watched a video about learning electronics on your own, RUclips recommends many self learn videos, and now this. Now I don't know what it is that I should learn as there are so many interesting things 😄
Medicine will have to find a way to keep us all alive to age 300, so we can have a fair chance to at least halfway learn half of these topics!
