Not high drama, but its duration conveys something of personality that back-and-forth editing misses.
Jan Zamojski They experimented, very briefly, with doing a split-screen of the panelist and the guest at the same time just before Dorothy died, but they only used it in a couple of shows. Shame-- I thought it worked very well, for all the reasons you just said.

That was regarded as a no- no by 1959; the casual exposure of equipment, boom mikes, technicians etc in the 'Chicago school' of live TV pioneered by Dave Garroway a decade earlier had come to be regarded as unprofessional.
Marge and Gower Champion were certainly a cute couple. They were married from 1949 to 1973. Gower Champion died in 1980 and Marge Champion is still living at age 95. His death at age 61 came several hours before the opening night curtain of the Broadway musical "42nd Street", which he directed and choreographed. On opening night, the show went on and no one in the cast or crew had been told of Champion's death. The show was a huge success with many curtain calls and, amid all the applause and cherring, producer David Merrick came on stage and made the announcement that Gower Champion had died earlier that day, provoking gasps and screams from onstage and from the audience. Champion had been ill for some time with a rare form of blood cancer.

A great panel game with witty erudite panel members who all possessed charm and dignity. John Daly as chairman/host was simply superb, a man never lost for words and a man who was well mannered and highly intelligent. Sad note? It would have been a nice touch if John Daly had mentioned the passing of Buddy and the two other recording stars also killed in the crash.
I watch this show every forth day (the other three days being the turn of: I’ve got a Secret with Steve Allen, To Tell the Truth with Bud Collyer, and You Bet Your Life with the incredibly brilliant and witty Groucho Marx) and I can honestly say it is not often a contestant comes along with such confidence, charm, beauty, and a lovable personality as Norma Dean the lady-on-horseback diver. She was very special.
This episode sports a brand new, improved, designed background upon the panelists' entrance. Eventually, the panelists will make their entrances from their stage left side as opposed to their current stage right side.

When Bennett would introduce John at the beginning of the show, often in a teasing, fun-poking way, but just often enough he'd introduce John Daly in a very complimentary way and Daly would feign shock that Bennett had said something so nice. It's once of the many things I like about watching these episodes.
They were actually very close friends, who had fun teasing each other. They said on the air a couple times that they'd gotten letters; John would get letters saying Bennett was awful to treat him that way, and Bennett would get them saying John was being terrible to him. They'd then assure the public that in reality they were quite close, and only kidding one another.

In fact, Peter Gabel and Jonathan Cerf were in boarding school and college together and ran a literary publication together at Harvard. Their adjacent homes were in Mount Kisco, NY.
The Cerfs definitely spent more time with Martin & Arlene and were closer to them in day to day life. That being said, though, Bennett and John certainly admired each other and I think there were times that they spent together as well, and Bennett's own words were that he and John and Arlene all become "close personal friends". Bennett attended the wedding of John's son and John gave the eulogy at Bennett's funeral. I don't recall the episode now (of course :)), but John once mentioned the letters they'd get about their "fighting" and said they were good friends, not only because they saw each other every Sunday but because they knew each other from other places as well. It was neat to me to see Phyllis Cerf, during one of her mystery guest turns, when John went into one of his long winded explanations, reach over and give him a little side hug. Who knows how deep any Hollywood friendship or relationship really goes, though, particularly on a show where civility and manners were so important. I remember when Peter & Jonathan were the mystery guests - if I recall they stumped the panel. :)

I could never like him because he was always annoying in whatever show he was in. It's weird to me seeing him in his younger days being funny and likeable with everyone glad he is there.
The screen read: "Dives 40 into tank on horseback." It would have been clearer to say, "Jumps 40 ft into tank while on horseback." Firehouses have poles rather than steps because horses will climb stairs and then be impossible to coax down. Yet, somehow a horse can be coaxed to jump from 40 ft.
Did men whistle at virtually anyone in a skirt back then or did WML employ professional whistlers, just to keep things interesting? That said, it’s obvious that good looks were always a plus in getting chosen as a guest. Those who expressed interest in appearing were asked to describe their lines and submit a photograph.
I felt the same way about 25 years ago at a local county fair. They had a mule that dove into a pool of water, along with various little dogs. The Human Society was there, & we were all determined that this show was going to be shut down because of cruelty. Well, the animals LOVED it. No sooner did they jump off the high-dive into the water than they were scampering back up the ladder to do it all again. We were all stunned.
In Stirrup High Walt Coburn tells of his teenage experiences on his dad's ranch & on a cattle drive in 1903. His mother insisted on proper schooling so he did some catching up summers. A ranch-hand had just about drowned & was on an island in a river where they were driving cows across. Coburn was not on his usual "kid's horse" but on a high strung animal as he rode to the top of a cliff overlooking the river so as to get a better view. W/o thinking he gave a quick flip of the quirt & instead of turning the horse jumped off the cliff! He went into ~10 feet of water & said he thought he'd never come up. After he did he swam the horse to the island as though that had been his intention. Lucky for a certain cowboy as he had learned more in HS about lifesaving than the cowhands knew. Another kid with the drivers later told him "When I saw you jump that horse into the river I knew you were a real horseman!"
It might be contended that within the parameters of the programme, he was occasionally apt to indulge in a modest surfeit of verbosity when moderating his friends on the panel.

because it is not about the money. if they were giving out large cash prizes then people would be competitive and they would have to stick to the rules. around this time other shows got in trouble for rigging the wins. giving contestants the answers to make the show more interesting. people cared because of the money involved.
For the umpteenth time, the purpose of a game show in entertainment. Why on earth would you begrudge John giving someone a little extra money? It's not like he's taking it away.
Give her a break please. She was no doubt nervous and unsure of how to answer questions correctly at times. Coming across well before several million viewers might make you or anyone somewhat tongue tied.

And there he goes flipping those STUPID cards over again (I still can't believe the producers didn't tell him about that! he ruins the entire show by doing that. It's bad enough he does it when they have 0, but he does it alot even at 30 and 40 points)! I'd like to know what the purpose of a gameshow is if even the losers win

if they were giving out large cash prizes then people would be competitive and they would have to stick to the rules.
around this time other shows got in trouble for rigging the wins. giving contestants the answers to make the show more interesting.

For the umpteenth time, the purpose of a game show in entertainment. Why on earth would you begrudge John giving someone a little extra money? It's not like he's taking it away.
I wanna' see a game show in which they take away money from a contestant for wrong answers.

Give her a break please. She was no doubt nervous and unsure of how to answer questions correctly at times. Coming across well before several million viewers might make you or anyone somewhat tongue tied.
