One of the great works of 20th century music. A true work of genius. That this symphony, in particular, probably Pijper's masterpiece, has received so few recordings is incomprehsible. Why is this recording, in its original form, and which someone (?) has thankfully tried his best to clear up, so bad? C'mon American orchestras, and all the conductors we have available in this world, can't someone record this masterpiece?
This is an interesting, thoughtful work, original, with a surprisingly delicate slow section, and an even more surprising conclusion. I'd heard van Beinum's performance on a London LP many years ago, but I'd forgotten what it sounded like. I'm glad I got re-acquainted with it.
There are at least two recordings available though both fairly ancient. One by Pierre Monteux (1963), the other by Edward van Beinum (1953). The second is available at budget price on Naxos.
Pierre Monteux in a book "It's all in a music" is beautifully recalling his relationship with Willem Pijper. By the way, the Symphony n. 3 is ( according to the book) dedicated to him. Great piece.

A magnificent and monumental performance by a great conductor in every respect!
So beautiful, masterpiece!
i'm deaf to Pijper's no.2, but wow, wow! 1 and 3 are awesome ... and so different
