He isn't completely blind. He probably realized the cane thing because he heard it and then looked hard to see what was making the sound. Then he probably realized that he was wearing the same thing. That's just my guess
someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think he mentioned that he is blind except for a tiny pinhole of vision- (I imagine it's like looking through the eye of a needle held far away from your face) He likely was better able to see in the brighter hallway lights (Paul has mentioned still able to process light via his eyes, but I may be remembering wrong-) and maybe paul heard the cane and did a once over and noticed the similar colors?
