- Was driving home and passed someone cleaning out their shed. They put a bunch of free stuff to the curb. In that pile was this mower. I no nothing about its condition. Lets go through it and see if it runs.

A mower in January the neighborhood probably thinks they are living next to project farm!
Whenever I get something free like that, I check under the engine shroud for a mouse nest and about 1/2 the time I find one.
Will take a look. Would not be surprised.
Very good thing to do! And if it's not a mouse nest, it's plugged with grass, etc...
Maybe we should market some mouse traps shaped like lawn mowers.
Hi, my name is Bill (if someone did not figure it out, :-) ), and I want to say thank you for all the hours of education you provide. I am trying to be a good boy by clicking the "like" button on every video. I have a Snapper, and it has stopped starting on the key because the battery is empty. Now, we have a very small lawn, and I have a very large battery charger, and have used it a few times to top it up (so I thought) because I use it for so short times and assumed it was not enough to top up the battery by itself. It is not the same Snapper model as in this video, not sure when I bought it, 3 years ago perhaps, maybe 4. It is a Snapper Hi-Vac, and I got surprised when you said it does not charge the battery by itself. I tried the charger that came with the mower, but it did not charge at all, so I gave that up fast. Now I have to hook up my voltmeter and see if the mower charge by itself. Because if not, I have to get the same charger as you put on the one in the video. That is perhaps a good idea anyway. Again thank you for your education, you are very good at it, please keep them coming.
Thanks for the feedback. Several have told me it has a charging system. Have not verified, but will also connect a multimeter to it and find out for sure. Would be surprised if it did.
What do you know how to do? EVERYTHING! I'm already amazed and today I watched a video with you and a drill press. What are you? Electrical engineer? Superman of fixing complicated things.
I'm always intrigued by the curbside finds of you and others (e.g. Mustie1), I only see bags of trash around in my area.
Me too man I never see anything on the side of the road but bags of trash
Same here also. This guy and Mustie are always finding great stuff. 👍👍👍😁😁
It's a rich east coast USA thing. Mustie is in NH and I think James is in NY. Seems like people there just have a hobby of buying expensive things, putting them into storage them giving them away.
@@noidle22 I do have to say I got lucky a couple of years ago. My neighbor could not get his Ariens 1128 snowblower from 2004 started. I cleaned the carb, changed belts, gave it a tune up and a few other minor adjustments and it runs like new. Next thing I know he says I could have it because of all the work I put into it. I was floored. Anyway, the thing is a beast and throws snow into the next county. 😁 That includes the heavy wet slop too. He's a great neighbor to have. Just wish they weren't moving.
@@noidle22 Jim has relatives in New Hampshire Jim and Mustie I watch all the time Ahhmmm and I watch Jim's videos more seriously you both are great to watch .
A nice lawnmower AND a nice putty knife for free. Nice find.
"Kinda hopin there'd be more wrong with it!" That's hysterical and the difference between a RUclips creator and the rest of us that work on them and flip them. We're glad when there is less wrong with them! 😉. Excellent quality as usual and keep em coming, James!
Makes for a boring video, but it is nice to get something that just works.
SP21675 is my favorite mower I've owned. I bought mine new in 2010 from a B&S area representative. B&S Power Group also supplied this exact model to John Deer which sold this model for several years, Simplicity also rebranded this model for years. Good video, I've enjoyed watching someone else (for a change) maintenace a good mower.
Some guy probably came back from his shed with the fuel can and found his mower was gone lol
Hey....that was me🤣🤣🤣🤣
Let’s just hope he’s not a subscriber, James!
By the way, that wasn’t your wife’s household vac you were using, was it?!? 😆
@@wayngoodman5889 Oh man that would be bad miffed wife LOL I am glad thee is no dramma in jim's videos .
@@wayngoodman5889 Your right what is up with that jim get a shop vac 30 bucks even less I am sure you asking for it if your wife finds mice nest stuff;s in that vac canaster .
Haha
Years ago you could find these gems in my area. What happened was our city does a free trash day twice a year. Once people put these items on the curb. The junk guys ride around in pickups to collect any metal for scrap salvage. The next best is estate sales I found one similar for $20.
They did the same in my area up until a few years ago.. Always looked forward to to it.
Love old Snappers. I repowered my 1998 Hi Vac 21 , with a New old stock B&S Quantum short block that I found on EBay .
Once again James a great result. The only reason he would throw it out was because of the battery....Couldnt be bothered to exchange it,,,but then again the fuel tank was empty and most likely been in storeage...maybe someone has passed away and thet emptey the shed....what a waste.
looks like you hit the jackpot on this one James great job. 👍👍. Shows what you can done with a little money, ingenuity and some TLC. And I’m sure the mower is happy that it found a new forever home, lol
Glad you enjoyed it
Snapper makes great mowers. I,very had one with the high vac deck, rear bagger with rear wheel drive for about 10 years. I just changed the plug, oil, and checked the valves for lash. Put in fresh gas and 2 pulls it started. Runs good and cuts good, but it doesn't like gas with ethanol. Stabill doesn't help it. I had to find some gas without ethanol. The percentage must be too high.
Gotta love a freebie. Nice find man.
Hey James, thank you for showing us some of the other things you work on. Another great video; keep em coming and stay safe.
just watching you cleaning under the deck triggered my allergies , lol
Man I can't wait for lawnmower season
You and me both.
Very nice mower and free can't beat that..
Reminds me of a few my Dad and I recovered from the curb. Most needed something like a light carb cleaning, or a flywheel key. Good find.
Where the heck do you guys find all these curb side machines I live in New Hampshire and the only ones i see are at the dump and i can not take them home.
I too always sidewalk surf for equipment. And, often it may be home to a mouse or two..😂
Free tools are always good.
It's your attention to detail, problem solving, never give up attitude and your completion of the job getting it back to factory specs with a demo at the end that keeps me watching every one of your videos James, so I can understand your comment about hoping there would be more wrong with it. However it's your generator work that really shows your craftsmanship - let there be more.
Great vid James. That's identical to my brothers mower now in it''s 13th year. It was over 400 dollars back then. (Canadian) He's never had a problem with it. Replaced battery a couple times. Tightened up drive cable a bit.(very easy). Also switched to Battery tender jr. I will say that grass hangs up a bit on the housing a bit a few inches below where bagger attaches. Rotted a small hole. Great drive system. Can't believe someone gave away a quality mower like that. Thanks James
The drive system on this is excellent. Ended up getting the discharge chute. Will keep an eye out for that problem. Thanks.
@@jcondon1 Forgot to mention, the belt cover plate underneath builds up grass also. 4 bolts I think, very easy from what I remember.
Well done! An entirely good reward for all the pleasure that you have givven us!
And thanks to Him and your neighbour that you were passing at just the right time!
I’m going to have to peruse your neighborhood at spring clean up time to see if I can get any bargains!!
I left a tractor about 10 feet from the end of my driveway once and went in for a bathroom break, I heard noise outside some guys were trying to load it into their pickup!!! I ran out there and said WTF!!! They said they thought I was throwing it out!!!
@@tommyhanlon8012 I don’t know about innocence. We used to park our bicycles at the end of the driveway when we were kids and they never got stolen. Different times we live in today for sure. A sign saying Free is one thing, stealing is another, especially when it’s scavengers that don’t live in your neighborhood
Man that a super nice find. I use to have one just like it but someone took it while I was cleaning out my garage.
lol. I asked the owner before taking it. Wanted to make sure I was not stealing it...
Like that vise grip connector.
Change the blade and you have a good mower. I don't know why someone would throw a good mower away they aren't cheap. Thanks for sharing your video with us. Ed
Pissed off wife maybe or exwife who got the home ohhh boy
Nice lawnmower I found a snapper lawnmower like this not to long ago but yours is in better condition than mines that’s for sure I love free lawnmowers especially when people throw away two lawnmowers at the same house
I fought and fought with a Briggs electric start. They’re not Bendix drive. They have a rubber washer for friction coupling, and it gets shiny and hard and the starter slips. Good you have a rope also (mine didn’t).
Great find. Nice work!
I love every video you put out i have learned so much thank you for the great work keep it up
Jame's , like your enthusiasm!!! Keep Up the good work!!!
And here I thought it was all about generators :-) - nice find with my favorite vertical B&S engine. Thanks for sharing
James, ive never seen a generator with a blade and bagger.😂Lol. That snapper should last you along time. Best thing is that it is rear wheel drive and working electric start. Nice find! 👍💰Roger
I love his gen vids his last gen find was cool a vertical gen set but like his mower finds also figured out a broken mower problems from his video on cable brake and kill connection being locked same thing on a Honda mower a customer had .
Great video, those older Briggs L-head engines were great engines!
It was nice having lunch with you today while watching your video 🤣🤣👍👍 What an excellent find. That mower was practically brand new. Premium one also. Glad that was an easy one for you.
Another great find James!😎
great find James & that tender will help that battery last ! ENJOYED ..
Nice find and useful.
Nice find!
OH-MY-GOD what an awesome find! I love Snapper mowers. I had a Hi-Vac for close to twenty years. I've never seen any other mower leave the lawn as immaculate as that did. Alas, I didn't notice it roll down a small hill while it was running - not enough oil in the case and it blew a rod which exploded out the side of the crankcase leaving a big hole. I was crushed. Decided immediately to get a new Hi-Vac. The new one vacs as well as the old one, but they cheaped out by omitting the blade clutch, which I loved. Now the engine stops every time you want to empty the bag. Nice find, thanks for your posts, they're all great.
Awesome find, a wal mart special snapper so a snapper in name alone, but gotta love those quantum briggs engines, started on first pull a free mower, gotta love it. great video as always.
For the wheel hub cap, I was thinking of putting a hose clamp around the portion that snaps, applying gentle compression, and softening the plastic with a heat gun, then letting it cool for a trial fit. I've not tried it before -- I'm just "armchair quarterbacking" here. :-D
Good idea. Will find out in the spring how it holds up.
Nice find! 👍
Hey James, those Briggs Qauntums do come with a charging system. It's on the outside of the flywheel.
Yeah I was going to say the same thing. That may have been an aux charging lead for storage in case someone didn't want to take the battery out. With people keeping these in sheds and stuff it would be really strange to require you to constantly connect an extension cord after each use. Nothing particularly luxurious about that...
A followup video of the charging system would be interesting. What voltage is the mower providing back to the battery?
I had no idea. Will have to break out the multimeter and make sure it is working.
Nice find 👍.
Nothing like a bagger to pick up leaves in fall. I use a bagger along with an Echo blower to move leaves. Haven't used a rake in 20 years...
Saw tip from Taryl......use the correct size tygon-type gas line, to stick a carb needle into, apply lap salve. And lap needle and seat, when parts can't be obtained. Works against leaky carb a lot of times.....???
Good score James.
Just fired up this video, can't wait to see how you get this to make power. My guess is a bad AVR.
It can make 3685.5 watts. Just need the right power head.
Nice catch
Nice find.
Good idea with the Teflon tape to hold the hubcap on. Like your videos James ! Keep them coming
lmfao. "I was kinda hoping there would be more wrong with it"
I am lucky also about a month ago god a free Craftsman LT100 a lawnboy push mower and free MTD push mower. Allthough I am not as lucky as you with easy fix AND I have to wait till spring to really work on them(busy with generators and Snowblowers here in New Hampshire) . Thank you for replying to my email by the way Jim.
The palette was good for you, hahaha!. good job👍
Nice one, & my fav price tooo :) Lick & balance the blade, blow out the shroud & belt cover & spoil it with an oil change, such a small amount of oil does a lot of work ya know.
Getting a new blade for it in the Spring. Changed the oil and will check out the cooling fins. Thanks.
hi james nice little bargain, well worth keeping mate
Thanks 👍. Looking forward to the grass turning green so I can put it to the test.
Super score! I do lawnmowers and 99% of the time the carburetors are full of water, dirt or old fuel and need service like rebuild or replacement
Great find... :-)
James, just wanted to drop a line to let you know you have a great informative channel. I'm watching many of your Generator No Power videos and I like how you use the same troubleshooting methods and clearly walk the novice through the testing routine. Ken's SE mentioned you a couple times, now I see why. Thanks Bob
Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback, especially from someone of your caliber. Love your work, by the way. I am lucky, Ken lives pretty close, so we have been able to collaborate and meet up a couple of times. --Jim
Good score! In a society of disposable everything, it's nice to see something headed to a landfill put back into service.
Yo that’s amazing !!
Good find.
While owning a home plus a recreational cabin for 50 years, I have never purchased a mower because people discard easily repairable units. The very best one was a high end Honda self propelled that only needed the idle mixture screw opened a 1/4 turn. We have an annual township wide "free" junk disposal day where I own the cabin and you would not believe the number of repairable mowers and string trimmers thrown away but no generators.
Continue the good work keeping useable material out of our landfills.
We used to have "Bulk Pickup Day" twice a year. Was a great time to drive around and pickup all sorts of stuff. Unfortunately the town did away with a a couple years back. Thankfully neighboring towns still do it.
Nice one.
Thought this was a Mustie1 video at first. :) Not that I'm complaining, nice video as always.
I noticed yours won't pull backward manually very well. Here is a trick when wanting to pull backward - release drive control , then push mower 3 " - 4" forward then it will freewheel in reverse. ( and yes, it has an alternator with diode to charge battery while running)
Awesome you got lucky. Nice machine but like been said before remove shroud check under there but I wish I could find machines like that. Also if 12 volts you can get a trickle charger to charge it
Nice!
A nice pickup. Hopefully he was just moving. Count it a another blessing.
I get all of my mowers from the County Landfill each Spring. If somebody's mower doesn't start on the first pull when they take it out of storage, they just throw them away. I've gotten mowers worth upwards of $300 for free and after about 10 minutes of cleanup, they work like new. Almost sinful that people just toss out usable equipment.
I agree. At list list it as free and give someone a chance to save it.
Now that you have the "free" lawn mower running, now is the time to sharpen the blade.
I knew when I saw that missing hub cab it would not be missing for long. :-)
Definitely a bit crazy what people get rid of.
Personally when I fix push mowers I assess them and make sure the repairs will cost no more than $60 so I make it halfway decent profit, I personally never buy used push mowers to sell.
The last two I’ve gotten one I just put gas in and it fired up so just did basic maintenance the other needs the brake cable replaced and regular maintenance.
Love it when they are easy.
Not much money to be made on them.
Nice score
I buy mowers at the scrap yard. I bought two, and they still had gas in the carb. I was able to run both of them there. It cost about $7 each. Both are Craftsman, and there are slight differences between the two, but that are both in nic condition. There was an old cub cadet mower there that was about 40 years old, and it was in fair condition considering its age. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have a place to keep it, so I had to leave it go. I'm friends with the owner, and that has it's benefits.
You got lucky on that one. Nice mower. Worth about $150-$175 if you were to shine it up and sell it.
Will not sell this one until I get something better. My Toro Recycler will be up for sale soon.
Yo yo .. alright mate .. tidy mower and with the electronic start it's a winner all day long.. oh and a free scraper too
Hey Mick, good to see you. The electric start is a nice feature. Nice to get something for a change that works.
I have a Toro Personal Pace mower I bought for about $495 20 years ago. It starts easily I have only had to replace a cracked gas tank and one cable . Mine is 6.5 hp but basically the same engine.
The Toro mowers are my favorite. The are well designed and work well.
Short video but a nice find, are you sure you didn't just rob someone's mower that they left out at the curb while they cleaned out their garage???
I was hoping there would be more wrong with it cos I love seeing you methodically work your way through the issues and bring them back to life. Still and excellent job and video, short but sweet!!
Nice wind chimes.
It also has a mulching flap on the side of the deck
lol the things people throw out!
Those lead-acid batteries with the spade terminals just can't put out enough amps through those small terminals to start an engine, even if the amp hour rating on the battery is higher than what the original battery was. Have to get the batteries with the big screw terminals. Nice find though, congrats!
Thanks. Makes sense. The new battery for the mower did surprisingly well. Probably due to the terminals as you pointed out.
You are a lucky dog 🐕
But how do you check and adjust the voltage and frequency??? LOL!!! Thanks for another cool video James.
Is it really one of your videos of we don’t check Hertz and Voltage ?? That’s a great find, can’t believe someone was going to chuck it, seems like such a waste.
JIm there busting you cap lol
Yea we will to stop calling him generator Jim and just call him the " guy that works on mowers
Lucky dog on a free mower .
7:35 Be careful with the battery polarity. If anything else (electronics) than the starter motor is in that circuit, there is a good chance to fry it when connecting a battery in reverse polarity.
Amazing how you find a top of the line mower for free!
Smart choice with Reviving the electric start. That’s the $50-$100 difference in value.
To keep costs down from getting them running, I order an aftermarket battery. Cheap charger (when not included) and I make my own harness using what I have.
Hey Jason, thanks for stopping in. See, I fix other stuff besides generators, not that this needed much.
If you get a chance, send me the link of the parts you use for charging. I pickup a lot of generators that have a battery and electric start, but no charging system. The OEM charger is always $50.
@@jcondon1 I’m at work right now...here is a video I made showing you the process.

James, don't you think the owner thought the engine was seized? The nylon rope around the blade and shaft had to be cut away, so that I don't think there was any rotation from the electric starter or the pull cord. I love all of your videos, its been a great education. Kind Regards, Craig
Not sure. I did not ask many questions, only asked if it was free. He may have a lawn service and just wanted to clean up space. Not sure.
The rope was around a part of the blade that wouldnt cause that issue, its like ladies hairs on the brush roll of a vacuum, it has to be cut away but as long as its not in the bearing its no issue.
You should get a better battery charger as the old battery might've been ok. I bought a CTEK MXS 5.0 charger a while ago & it's reconditioned & saved quite a few batteries. It's brilliant, I wish I had bought one years ago.
Any charger with a microprocessor is always going to be worse than the old transformer batteries, ive got three and everytime i encounter a battery thats below 6 volts the microprocessor ones wont even start cause they dont realize a battery is even there, but these old transformer units just dont care they fire anyway, and you can run them on trickle charging for a night to bring the battery back slowly, thats how ive done it and only on really old batteries that have physical bulging have they failed to come back.
@@compzac I've never had that problem with a Ctek, I've charged batteries lower than 2v easily. If you do encounter that problem, you just connect another good battery in parallel with jump leads to raise the volts a bit and then connect the charger.
Free Trowel! 😁
You can get those batteries on amazon for around $25.
I know people pay more for the Electric Start, but my mower starts first or second pull in the spring. Not sure I'd want to go through all the trouble of maintaining the battery for what that's worth.
It is easy to start and not necessary on this size engine. Could make a big difference to someone with a shoulder issue or arthritis.
nice find, just needs a new blade
I agree. That one still feels balanced, but it is damaged on one side.
Looks like you have a good bargain for free. Probably thrown out by someone that's brought one of those maintenance free rechargeable electric mowers see a lot of that in our area now. More money then sence.
Somethings are just too easy this lawnmower being one of them and it was free
A "battery tender" is NOT a charger, it's only designed to maintain the charge on a fully charged battery. Or at least that's what it says on the ones I got from Harbor Freight...
