I have already managed to forge two like this, but smaller. The ones found in Hedeby were accompanied by pieces of leather that allowed them to be placed under shoes. They were very likely used as cleats. After testing, it works really well when it rains and the ground is very slippery with historical shoes.
im almost certain the "trivets" in these finds are not trivets at all but ice crampons, they are almost identical to crampons found attached to shoes, and are too small to be practical as tripods imo. Also the fact they come as a pair, you wouldnt need two tiny trivets really, but one ice crampon is useless without the other lol.
Yes, you are right. I just assumed they were trivets (I use it for that) and didn't do more research before I forged. But another comment pointed that out as well so you are right :D
