This sort of video is really useful for people like me - a hobbyist who's just getting started learning about tube amp maintenance.
In case you still wonder if the 'long/boring' videos are OK... They are VERY useful, we learn a lot and a lot of us enjoy every minute of it, really :) I started a complete overhaul of my 1959SLP and a new practice amp project from scratch... 80% of it all is based on those 'boring' videos. Thanks for what you do 👍

I find these videos pretty educational, as they don't just show the result, but give insights on the whole work process and how many ugly little details are involved if you wanna have a really great result. And honestly: 1h for de-populating the whole board... cleaning... de waxing... cleaning... measuring all components... properly re-populating... cleaning again... that is a pretty quick job! And you were even explaining throughout the whole time. 👍
Actually, I could very well imagine 2 different formats on your channel:
1. The "Consumer Friendly" Stuff that presents the amp, its problems and shows how they were solved. 5-10min. Easy to consume.
2. The "Die Hard" Stuff that shows your whole Work Process with all the nitty bitty details. 30-60min. Perhaps just for members (= donators) of your channel?
The only concern is, that it would be good for everyone to see, what effort it really takes to get an old amp back in great condition. That is what I mean by "educational content". Just seeing the finished results can give the impression that doing all the work is an easy job.

I love watching a craftsman, artist, and smart and highly skilled talent do their work.
For straightening the wire: better take two pliers or a small vice where you pinch one end, then take the other push the wire a bit together so it bows up and then pull with a short tug/jerk apart => immediate straight wire. Did Miles of wire straightening out this way during my apprenticeship and it worked always, making nixe straigt pieces...

Would love to see an extra hour of your process to dial the clipping out of a bias modulated tremolo--easier said than done in my experience, even after cooling off the bias!
Really enjoyed this video. It's nice to see that the soldering station is treating you well. Maybe disconnect the little piezo horn to stop the beep when it's up to temperature. It's nice that it stays clean.
If anything, for me, this was a master class in soldering.

Lyle i love seeing exactly how to properly clean and prep a board for repopulating. I have never had to do this, as most of my amps are solid state. But you explained in one video the kind of materials they used and what happens over time. I wouldn't have know what to do with an amp like that. Coming from a 44 year construction background, this is my "happy place". I love fixing my amps, and keeping them working or upgrading the crappy factory component's so that they sound great and stand the test of time. You are my hero. Yes a cup of coffee really makes my day too.
Boredom is a state of mind. I love this stuff. Makes me want to shop for a champ kit.

This was a great video. I prefer watching the longer videos, which is showing you actually doing the work with this type of detail. As far as your commentary, you’re doing fine . I think the commentary is absolutely necessary for the viewers to understand better what you’re trying to accomplish. I Look forward to watching part 3.

I’ve always cleaned off the flux the way you do but never thought of melting off the excess wax with a heat gun. Thanks for that tip!
I keep a piece of 1/2” thick wood next to my soldering station and roll the wire on the desktop to straighten it out. It works better than anything else I’ve ever tried.

Lyle, every time I tune in, I learn something new. Today, I learned that we have a similar estimation of idiots in ties telling us what to do...as well as many aspects of meticulous craftsmanship as applied to old tube amps. Thank you.
Hi Lyle, just so happens I've got red-green deficient colour-blindness too, I get reds and browns confused, and greens and oranges confused, but I have no trouble differentiating different shades of blues, same like you, I use my trusty multimeter to check the resistor values.

What a champ you are.
We used to use 2 nails very close together in a block of wood secured to straighten out wire and Fish tape to get the kinks out ,the idea is to pull it at a sharp angle ,it may be a little to much for doing this but it does work well
I had a piece of something like paper, (probably a piece of cigarette paper), get sucked into my heat gun, where the airflow and the hot resistance wires got it stoked up with air and heat into a nice hot glowing ember. The heat gun spit it out and I had a little alcohol fire going. I use those flat tube cigarette tube papers to blot & wick moisture out of meter faces and other very tight places. I had guy drop a Yeasu 857 into a bucket of water. I used the cigarette papers to clean between the plastic window and the LCD display. It actually worked better after it got wet. I do NOT think that is normal. Plain cigarette papers are also used to check for leaking valves on woodwind instruments. $10,000 for a Yamaha Apex repad kit. It's for a $50,000 flute.

Good morning Lyle, I do not work on amps, I just play them. I couldn't fix something electronic if my life depended on it. I love these long videos. I put them on while I'm at work and find them fascinating. No idea why. People are weird but I dig the long videos.
In regards to an 8ohm speaker and the 2k7 NFB resistor, on my Champ I ran the NFB from the 4ohm tap and the 8ohm speaker on the 8ohm tap. Works perfectly. Thanks for pointing that out!

It's almost therapeutic watching you clean off all that old flux & excess wax and then repopulate the board. Especially on a simple circuit like the Champ. It's much easier for a novice to understand and follow along. Please do keep up the long format videos if you enjoy it. P.S. thanks for answering my queries on the Super Reverb treble pot/ 250k J taper. I've heard you say Fender uses a J taper pot enough times I was pretty sure that's what I wanted, but wanted to double check. So don't think I haven't been listening in class professor :)

Oh bus wire? Have some old electricians show you how to take all the curly Qs out of a fish tape. There are two techniques.

I'm surprised how quickly you work.
If the replaced OT was over spec, one could present the owner with the option to run "any octal" output tube if you beef up the cathode bias resistor, ish? But, nfb toggle and a tone stack defeat mod and let a champ be a champ. But the hobbyist Hubris-ist in me keeps wondering the OT specs.

When you pull out a pair of 68K input resistors off of the board...... do you:
Try to get each one back in the holes it came from?
Or
A 68K is a 68K. Just solder them in?

If the 68Ks really measure 68K (or close enough) and the eyelet spacing is the same, it doesn’t really matter.
95% of players plug into the higher gain input jack, so the two resistors are in parallel anyway, taking their placement out of the equation.
In a very rare valuable amp any part that is temporarily removed goes back exactly where it was.
But this is a ‘75 Champ.
@@PsionicAudio Thanks Lyle. From a "logical" standpoint I knew that! It's just that there are those who "hold" that the "mojo" of the original amp requires that each resistor MUST GO IN THE SAME LOCATION where it spent the last 60 to 70 years .... or you have destroyed the amp!!!

Tempting to try it, but you'd have to use a fair bit of alcohol to submerge the board,, and the fiber might deteriorate if put into an ultrasonic cleaner.
How do you handle ventilation and fumes while soldering? Any health risk? Is a fume extractor worth it?

Lyle, just to clarify, since I am about to swap my 4 ohm speaker with and 8 ohm. I can get away with keeping the negative feedback resistor spec'd for the 4 ohm speaker if I connect the 8 ohm secondary to the output jack and the 4 ohm secondary to the negative feedback resistor? Thanks!

I could. But there is no benefit.
Lyle, would it be easier to use a new Hoffman board rather than doing all that work? From a time saving perspective that is?
Nah, this is faster and keeps the original board/layout. I don’t like the Hoffman layouts personally. Good for beginners, but I have some disagreements with some choices and the aesthetics.

Disassembly and reassembly time would be the same. So $30-40 (with shipping) for a board plus a week’s wait vs thirty minutes of minor effort?

It very much can. Most Fenders can handle a slight mismatch but the Champ uses such a tiny output transformer a mismatch is very much not recommended.

Are eyelet boards expensive? Why not just replace some of those warped crusty ones?
I don’t see any exact replacements for this model out there, the non-correct ones are $20-35 before shipping, transferring the hole locations takes time, and building a correct one from scratch takes much more time.
So this is the most cost-effective method.
