I was so lucky to get a ride in the jumpseat, of a Biman DC10 from Chittagong to Dhaka! :) Please enjoy and post a comment or two. Camera used: Nikon D5100
The pilot on the right is my father Capt. Shamim Ahmed. He retired at the end of 2013. Thank you so much for this video. We (our household!) discovered it.. and I showed it to him! He got so nostalgic! :) Thank you for making and uploading this video!
+Badru Ahmed, Oh really ... This is Great !! You r so lucky tht's ur father was a pilot... I love this profession from my childhood & still now... If i could meet with him tht 'ld be memorable moment for me. :) Thank You :)
Helloe Badru :) I'm glad to know, that your father and the household, enjoyed my video. It's been three years now, but I still remember that amazing flight today. Your father was very friendly, as were everyone else onboard the flight - and he made me feel welcome on board. :)
How can people complain for something so awesome like getting to sit in a cockpit of a DC10, which is no longer in service. That's what you call an awesome experience that very few people will ever get to have.....
That thing sounds and looks like an old freight train. Loved the whole start-up sequence, glad I'm not the only one on the tarmac with my head deep in a checklist. I know a guys who brag about not having used checklists in years, scary.
Fantastic vid , thanks for posting. You're extremely lucky! Bangladeshis are very friendly warm people and it shows , Captain bantering away during the back-taxi pointing out F6s and such!
A truly wonderful video...thank you for sharing this....it brought back many happy memories for me...I was an engineer on DC-10-30 aircraft for CP-Air...( Canadian Pacific ). The DC-10 was a great aircraft...a machine with a soul...!!
Flight Engineer, not Navigator. ;) They still do it that way in old fashioned miliary planes, such as the E3-Sentry and the older versions of the C-130. With all the analog instruments and mechanical operating elements, the Flight Engineer is responsible to adjust the engine speed during takeoff to gain steady trust on all the engines, because all of them are running slightly different. During flight, he's the supervisor for all mechanic, hydraulic and electric systems. On the ground, he's performing the visual pre and post flight outside checks.
Nice video, thanks for uploading. Too many people making comments that betray that they don't know much about airplanes. Virtually all airplanes, especially those that were designed by humans, not by computer, had their share of design flaws, and the DC10 was no exception. But after they were corrected, the Ten proved to be a tough and reliable machine. To all DC10 haters: learn your facts before dishing a great airliner.
+sobelou I think the Chicago crash of 1979 may have doomed McDonnell Douglas, as it killed the sales prospects of the DC-10 Super 60 -- which exactly like the DC-8 Super 60 of the previous decade, incorporated mods for increased capacity (-61), range (-62) or both (-63). By the time the aircraft's reputation recovered in the early '80s, the airline industry was no longer interested due to an economic downturn. The MD-11 had some of the same improvements, but it was so late that it was fundamentally unable to compete with more efficient all-new designs such as the Airbus A330 and the Boeing 777. The need for greater fuel efficiency also led McD-D to use an unusually small horizontal stabilizer on the MD-11 (this is notable if you compare the DC-10 and MD-11 in plan view), which was implicated in at least two landing crashes.
***** You make good points, but here's what I think: I don't think that the series 60 DC10s had great future prospects, it was to close to 747 territory. So the stretch would have to wait until the MD11 concept came along. As for the MD11, it was on paper in a great position to compete with both the 777 and the A340 (the 330 in the 90s was still a mid-range machine), but the MDD Board blew it when instead of designing a wing they tried to save money by improving the DC10 wing, essentially a 60s design. Then the 777 started to prove how reliable the new big engines were, and that doomed not only any revival of the trijets; even the A340 began to wane as better versions of the 330 were put in service. Now, except for extremely large machines, two engines are the rule.
Solomon Pilot It's also notable that Bangladesh is a Muslim country -- many Muslim-country airlines cheaply acquired first-generation wide-bodies (such as DC-10s and L-1011s) in order to provide extra capacity to service the Hajj to Mecca, with these aircraft put into storage for the rest of the year. Perhaps the phasing out of these aircraft was expedited by Saudi Arabia's crackdown on the use of obsolete aircraft to transport Hajj pilgrims?
Biman & the DC 10. This was a long love affair. They`re meanwhile replaced by B 777s and just 2 left (One is to be scrapped. Other is a standby aircraft until February 2014.)
I was so lucky to get a ride in the jumpseat, of a Biman DC10 from Chittagong to Dhaka! :) Please enjoy and post a comment or two. Camera used: Nikon D5100
Amazing video. Biman goes from DC-10 to Boeing 787 max 8. huge improvement. people who are whining about FO's seatbealt....it's called experience. I know it's not right but they are so experienced that they don't wear it unless there's any real emergency lol. Still, for safety purposes, it's important to buckle up. DC-10 is a gem. I really love this 3 engine plane.
And the cockpit....omg...!!! Looks like it will tore apart at any moment :o These pilots got balls of steel to fly these decades old air crafts until now. Thanks God its not flying anymore though. And also the Nanchang A5 is retired from service now :D
*"There is absolutely nothing wrong with a well maintained aircraft of any age. Kids."*
Great video... Just 2 issues - 1. the FO needs to put his full harness on, in an emegency he can be ejected some distance into open space, from his seat into the cockpit if he only has a lap belt on taking the Capt out and anything he hits. 2. Is that when it comes to checklist less speed is better no matter how old or good you think you are Say-Look-Touch is safer. But great video...
We should bring the DC-10 back with fly-by-wire technology, glass cockpit, composite fuselage, next generation wings/winglets, and next generation engines.
DEAR COMMENTATOR, YOUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WIDE BODIED AIRCRAFT IS 100% TRUE. BIMAN ONCE USED DC--10 IN HAJJ FLIGHT BUT NOW USES B-777 B-747( LEASED). TRI-STAR ETC. EXACT POLICY CAN SAY BY A ONLY BIMAN SENIOR OFFICIAL IF GOVERNMENT PERMITS. THANKS A LOT
Awesome doesn't describe it....thanx for sharing. I express my jealousy of you working on 16's!....my A/P only goes as far as a twin piper. Thank you for your service, as always.
+Philip Schmidt Any time sir....you want some world class salmon fishing, come on out here to S.E. Alaska and I promise you fish! You're always welcome around here.
Very unusual SOP and CRM, as the PF, in this case the capt, sets the flaps and engages the A/P on climb out. In most airlines those are callout from the PF to the PNF to accomplish. I guess it works for them, but a little extra workload for the PF, especially having the FE as confirmation eyes. Not having the FE position around is killing the pilot pool today, as it was the position for a low time/new hire pilot to gain valuable experience and build total time. Very nice video, thaks!
Was this in 2013? Amazing. I flew Biman AMS-BOM in 1986 on a DC-10. I asked Biman to find out which exact plane it was, but never got a reply.... The food was great...
What kind of aircraft are tbry using to still need a 3rd officer position? I see 3 thrust levers so that tells me 3 engine aircraft such as a Boeing 727
Philip Schmidt Cool, thanks. I should have known that by the clue at the very beginning of the video that the flight deck was level with the 2nd floor of that terminal. I have a picture taken of me sitting in the left seat of a DC-10 back in my Northwest airlines days.
You Sir made a great video! My father is now retired and he became nostalgic watching this video several times.. :') so thank you! And the video is great.. as it is! :)

The corner is most likely damaged or worn out due to condensation when they are flying above certain hights, then moisture from their breath is collecting above their windows, likely the corners, and when theyget closer to ground, water starts dripping down, it certainly does on a md
same thing on MD11 (and some other 'mature' aircrafts)... If you notice recent videos, the foam covering the windows frame are used for most of them... But yes, MD11 are around 20 years, this DC10 is 40! ;)

Hi from India! What a cool job your father had! You must be proud.
Hi! Yes I am! ^_^ And now my older sister is a pilot too! :)
Philip Schmidt Hi from Dhaka, Bangladesh! Yes I know my father is quite the friendly person! :) So glad that you enjoyed being on board with him :)
I can sleep listening to these jets. Travelled so many times on Biman as a child on the DC-10s.
Surprisingly DC 10 never met an accident in Bangladesh, though it's too old. Thank you Mr. Schmidt
ADN was crashed at Chittagong by the Head of Flight Safety. The aircraft was written off - pilot error.
That Captain is very cool & friendly...........
Long live Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩

Flight Engineers....remember them! Very cool video. The DC-10 is a classic.
michael powell 🇧🇩 yes we do
I remember because I was one. 727/747.

Awesome video; thanks for sharing! I miss the DC-10! I the last time I flew on one was with United in 1992.
Thanks for a great video! My Dad flew the DC-10 back in the late seventies, and I wish I could've ridden along with him like this!
thank you for inviting us aboard the amazing analog DC-10
I keep thinking of the Clash's Spanish Bombs.
"I'm flying in on a DC-10 tonight."
@Pete Blake The DC-10 is by no means a "hunk of junk" it's just an old and highly reliable aircraft.
Great video indeed ! I didnt know pilots work so much, thought it runs on autopilot always.... Respect!!
I am an AME from biman bangladesh airlines.....thnx for upload this precious video...
I once rode along with a pilot in his car. He also went by a check list before we drove off. Habits die hard or maybe he was bs'ing me.
Without checklist how they diagnose prone
Great video, brings back memories of my trips on Canadian airlines DC10's.
25 seconds from full throttle to rotation; and the "pilots" and and a "navigator" actually have to fly the plane - impressive.

Excellent vid! Love the complete start-up sequence. I had a takeoff in CGP as well and a landing in AUH, It was a nightflight :-)
Great video...........................Excellent work.
WOW! I thought the DC-10 was an antique! Good to see they're still flying though.
Hi Freddie! :)
Sadly Biman retired their last two remaining DC10's a few months ago :-(
Thus, ending a 40 year old era of DC10 passenger flights
Thats a shame :( Still one heck of a plane though :)
Good question, he seemed quite old, so perhaps they retired him with pension.
@Yeashas both of em retired
I' am from Bangladesh very nice video, tnx for u 🇧🇩

Very short leg to Dhaka. Not much fuel on board.
Very good take off of Biman Bangladesh Bangladesh Airlines DC-10/30.
We should bring the DC-10 back with fly-by-wire technology, glass cockpit, composite fuselage, next generation wings/winglets, and next generation engines.

Isn't it against regulations to allow passengers in the cockpit, let alone filming, while the aircraft is in motion?
Officially yes, but they made an exception I guess.
And yes, it was a regular scheduled passenger flight. :)

Typical colonised people mentality! Still willing to bend over backwards for the white man, even if it means breaking the rules!

The video was shot on july the 16th. 2013
