Great white shark hunts humpback whale. How did this happen?

  • In 2017, a great white shark hunting a humpback whale was filmed in Mossel Bay, South Africa. The resulting footage was used to produce documentaries and scientific papers, but remained highly controversial with viewers questioning why the whale was not rescued. Here I analyse the footage collected to review the events and decisions made.

I really appreciate that you covered this particular subject. I thought Shark vs Whale was a great documentary. But I do understand why some people are bothered by it. But the truth is, like you mentioned in this video, there was nothing anybody could do for a whale, and the shark really just sped up what would have been a long, agonizing, slow death. She did the whale a favor, and in turn the whale fed her and a lot of other animals. It's heartbreaking, I love humpback whales, but it's nature and it's understandable. I'm more angry at the long lines and the traps in the water that hurt these animals in the first place.

This is the second video I have seen of the same situation in that
!. Both Whales were Humpbacks the 1st one full grown and the predators were large Great whites
    2. They were both near death They had been suffering and in shallow waters over a long time.
    3. They were both dragging luggage. The first one the exhausted whale was dragging massive nets AND a weight .4. The same hunting tactic - described in the video was used The Great White opened an artery where the tail meets the body . There is a thin skin area that sharks can get their teeth into to cause bleeding out.
    5 Both were fatal.

I heard a giant mako expert say he thought big makos around 13 or 14 feet could do this to a giant great white over 20 feet! He noted the biggest makos used this tail biting strategy that opened up arteries and it combined this with it's amazing speed and reflexes. They kill Marlins, giant tuna, other sharks and swordfish using this tail biting technique and it's incredibly effective against larger prey. I saw a mako of around 9 feet kill a Marlin that was much larger and heavier with one big tail bite that disabled it and killed it via blood loss.

Great footage and points to the intelligence of great whites. The shark moves in - bites to cause blood loss and weakening the prey. Then knows to drown the whale - I'm not sure the shark actually knows the whale needs to breathe but it is definitely learned behaviour. Which points to this being a reasonably common predatory event. Either that or sharks are even more intelligent than we give them credit for.

One thing that can give some perspective is that death by drowning is how most whales die. Death by "old age" for an air breather in a marine environment really just means the animal eventually becomes too weak to break the surface. So that aspect of this event is no more "cruel" than a normal end of life for a whale.

I don't relish predation videos either, and this was agonizing to watch.
Yet I'm stricken by the irony of how many people just love orcas and have no problem, even applauding orcas killing white sharks just for their livers.
Moreover, orcas will hunt down these same humpback whales (and other whales), often targeting mothers and their calves, isolating the calves just so they can eat the tongues out of the calves, leaving them to bleed out and drown as the mothers cry for days. Far more gruesome than this scene. But sure, the orcas get a pass.
In cases like this scene, because humans are the cause of luggage (nets and fishing line) entangling marine life, when possible, I feel that attempts to help these whales are warranted.

Amazing to see, once in a lifetime experience. Very sad situation for the whale, but as you stated it was past intervention. If they managed to somehow scare the shark away, the whale is just going to meet the same fate later on. Sad that human activity likely caused the decline of the whale’s health, but at this point it is just food for a beautiful, powerful, predator.

First of all the whale just sat there. So it was 9 out of 10 sick and dying which a healthy whale wouldn't have done. Much less any other animal for that matter. It explains why the shark was just able to swim up to it and chomp down on it without any reaction from the whale. If the whale had the strength it could have whacked that shark with it's tail and that would have most likely killed it. Or at the very least injured it badly.

Ive heard theories from people about giant great whites killing smaller lone whales by attacking the tail and opening arteries causing it to bleed out, ive heard a giant Mako expert say he thinks a big 14 foot mako using its speed and reflexes could possibly do the same thing to a 20 foot great white if it landed that big bite on the tail from behind. This whale is injured already clearly and theres ropes or fishing line tangled up here too so its not a true healthy whale vs healthy great white scenario but it shows what a huge female around 22 feet and 5 tons could do to a whale this size? It cant handle an 11 foot shark so a shark double that size would be a nightmare for lone whales like this! 😧🦈🐳🐋

it makes me curious if sharks will hunt whales without this kind of human intervention. the idea it knows to attack the tail makes me think they can hunt whales they just don't have the opportunity to do so since the animal is generally too big and dangerous to hunt.
as for freeing the whale? that should be a risk to the fishers who set up these traps. they are the ones who 'should' be risking their lives for what they have caused. but since that will never be the case, and it's volunteers who often have nothing to do with this cruelty, the risk need to be judged properly.

Great video and analysis- the fact of life is nature is cruel, but for a reason. The sick and the weak shouldn’t survive, look what happened to the ecosystem when the wolves in Yellowstone got removed and then reintroduced. Eco systems need balance. The fact humans massacre millions of sharks each year is damaging to the ecosystem and the void will be filled, jellyfish and squid for example. We are the problem not a GWS doing its job.

These are animals who go off of instinct and natural abilities. They’re not attacking each other or hunting for no other reason then survival the same as we do.

It would’ve taken days, you could’ve easily implemented something to drag the whale behind the boat, you could’ve also done something for its skin. It was not the whales fault it was the humans fault. Refusing human intervention is just refusing to take the blame and refusing to do anything to put right the wrongs that we (humanity) have done. You have the ability to pull giant great white sharks on ships and tag them while pumping water through their gills to keep them alive. But we don’t have the ability to do the same thing for a small whale 🐋 and transport it back to his/her pod in a matter of days where it could’ve receive treatment while in transportation while at the same time being safe from any predators.
