Susan Lenz He was reading the words because he sang a different cover pertaining to the city he was in each night. He usually didn't know the song he was singing until right before the show started. No practice or anything. So yeah, he had the lyrics in case he needed to be reminded of a line or two. He played 3 and a half hours every night... He definitely was not "getting lazy."
If you've ever seen him live, you'll know he gives one of the most high energy shows in country music. And it's worth every penny and more. If he needs to read some words on a cover song... God bless him.... Go right ahead.
