Pierre Soulages is a French artist whose thick black brushstrokes, called Outrenoir on lighter backgrounds have characterized his paintings and prints since the late 1940s. Like Jean Fautrier and Hans Hartung, he is close to the movement linked to abstraction in Paris and his paintings find an echo in the abstract expressionist movement which is emerging at the same time in the United States. Romanesque and prehistoric art near his childhood home inspires his pronounced application of pigment in non-figurative forms. Soulages becomes the first contemporary artist to be presented at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Born on December 24, 1919 in Rodez, Soulages lived and worked between Paris and Sète. The artist donated 500 works to the Soulages Museum, which opened in his hometown in 2014. He died in October 26 2022 in Nîmes (France)
Thank you for sharing these fantastic paintings that are thought provoking and visually pleasing.
Thank You - very good - excellent
unique block element and broad stroke approach with calligraphic overtones..often deep, dark, dense and dynamic...🤖🌑🌓
Soulages is a total revelation. Another highly informative video...and thank you for including the size in the caption
Thank you for sharing!
I visited Musee Soulages, Rodez about 5 years ago. The whole experience felt deep and immersive, almost like being inside the mind of Soulages himself. The space and the light played a massive role in allowing the viewer to not only see Soulages' huge cavasses, but also bear witness to the ever shifting shadows hauntingly rise and dip over the dynamic brush strokes.
The music for this video is perfect. One instrument (flute) playing, dancing and stretching one note. Much like Soulages does with one color.
One of the greatest painters with his believe and idees. I hope to go visit Rodez in France for the Pierre Soulages Museum
