Would it be possible for Dr Moon to put his written speech online? I'm sure many people would like to read it. Perhaps there could be a link on this channel?
What I find odd is why would a head official of our National Library NOT be supportive of British colonization. I mean, without it our country would not have been built into what it is today. Does this person have no pride in NZ?

Two major points. 1. Do NOT let those in the National Library who seek to cancel hide behind their bureaucracy. Remove their anonymity as public servants. Name them. 2. Paul Moon is an informed historian who presents a nuanced and factual approach to the Treaty. This clashes with those who who have an almost pathological attitude toward the colonial office in the 19cth century verging on anglophobia. The principal narrative is to condemn colonialism and valorize the indigenous. Yes, its decolonization again that is blind to any opposing or alternative narrative.

10 years ago, while doing a family history, I came across a very useful resource called 'Papers Past'. Until about a year into it, whoever oversaw Papers Past began changing the dates on the publications to the Maori calendar , which made dating events difficult as the Maori calendar is six-months out from the standard calendar. It was simple vandalism of an important historic resource. After about a year of struggling with this, and presumably a ton of complaints, they changed it back to the usual calendar..

Prof Moon saying the library's director wanted him to remove a quote from historian John Seeley, which famously described the British Empire being 'acquired in a fit of absence of mind'. 'But what arguably makes the matter worse are the attempts at controlling what is said or written by someone the library has invited as a speaker.' Prof Moon told Daily Mail Australia the quote was meant to demonstrate the chaotic and haphazard nature of the British colonisation of New Zealand. Britain's plans to take sovereignty of New Zealand with the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 were put into effect in a matter of months, he explained. 'Seeley encapsulated that in the quote and I thought it was quite useful - it's been used by many historians,' Prof Moon said. 'There was absolutely nothing controversial about what I was going to say. There's nothing particularly new about it or radical.' To interpret the quote as being supportive of British colonisation was an 'extraordinarily ill-informed view'. The library had earlier taken exception to Prof Moon's use of the term 'whakapapa' - the Maori word for genealogy, in the speech and asked him to remove it, which he reluctantly did. No reason was given and Prof Moon was surprised, given that incorporating Maori terms was 'one of the things we're encouraged to do'.

It would be both interesting and informative to know the context of the use of the word 'whakapapa', as it is a word now used by every woke person in the country, so why wouldn't they want to include it? However, perhaps it is a simple matter of a non-woke person wanting to use only English words in the summary of the speech, so that it is understood by everyone?
