Album: Fragments for the End of Time
Video: Apocalisse, Ms. Latin 14410 (XIII cent.)
    / musicamedievale

From the booklet of the album:
From the time of Christianity’s introduction into Europe until the end of the first millennium, apocalyptic images of the End of Days and the Last Judgement were widespread, both in texts and in the visual arts. These images, based largely on the Biblical Revelation of John, at times bear a remarkable similarity to the pagan Germanic descriptions of the world’s destruction during the final terrible battle (Ragnarök) between the gods (Odin, Thor, etc.) and their mortal enemies, the giants. These disparate sources share certain characteristics: the terrifying words of female oracles; the sounding of the horn; the massing of armies from below and above; the breakdown of material reality and the final destruction of the world by fire.
The image of the Apocalypse which most readily comes to mind is associated with the almost incomprehensible mystery of the ‚end of time’, filled with terror and destruction. We envision the chilling image of the four horsemen mercilessly riding down upon our doomed world. But the Greek word apokalypsis actually means unveiling, or revelation, an image strongly linked to our mortal desire for access to the mysteries of existence, to our almost physical longing for union with creation and with the deity. John’s Book of Revelation is not only a faithful report of what he saw and heard in visions on the island of Patmos, but it is also filled with the feeling of his impatience and desire. In all these senses of the word, medieval artists created an especially powerful body of sung poetry, often in obscure images and language, visionary and prophetic, to prepare the singer and listener alike for a particular inner voyage of comprehension, and to awaken the soul to the experience of ‚seeing’ that which is one day to be revealed.
The instruments used in this concert include reconstructions of Germanic harps (based on 7th century instruments from Oberflacht, near Stuttgart), an early medieval triangular harp, and copies of medieval transverse flutes (including a flute made from a swan’s bone, based on an 11th century instrument unearthed near Speyer).

I beg to differ because this music was created for and by a miniscul part of society, where as now more and more people can enjoy and create more and different things and the spread of said art is also bigger

@@HansWurst1569 But it is arguably also much more mediocre. More does not mean better. In this case it is the opposite. Our culture does not suffer from a scarcity of art, it suffers from an overabundance of uninspired and unskilled works of "art" which often smother or push under the best quality work.

Well, if you think about it, the end of time is the end of all things, as time itself stops and since time and progress go sorta hand in hand, even though mankind set a time for progress on earth, hence time itself does not exist like nature, but it is measured with astrology n such, there is nothing left. If there was something left floating around in space, you could say we can count the seconds. But we are not there anymore. So everything is peaceful, since there is nothing going on. And if nothing exists, nothing can cause trouble. From a human perspective that's pretty scary, but when no human exists, no human can feel scared. I wonder what a fragement of the end of time looks like though, when everything is gone to make time possible.

Beautiful choice ~ I have every Sequentia album & I find it difficult to choose a favorite; truly that’s a joy as they have explored & covered music from almost every conceivable corner of the earth. I suppose I could probably make a “top 5” if I had to! ~On a different note, I hope you are familiar with all of the sublime early music releases on Dorian Recordings? The label (as Dorian) sadly shut down many moons ago, but if you don’t have the discs in your collection they still can mostly be found. One of my fav ensembles of all time, The Baltimore Consort, has many *priceless* discs on Dorian, as well as Ensemble Galilei, Altramar Medieval Ensemble, Pomerium Vocal Ensemble, and so on... If you are an obsessive collector as I have been all my life, well you already know this discography - if so sorry for a long msg - otherwise go forth & enjoy the riches :)

Thank you, but personally I think that “In that year” no one had the feeling that the world was about to end. This is simply a concept album about the apocalypse. In the Middle Ages, death was an accepted daily presence, today people can't even bear the killing of a chicken, which it then eats. When death arrives in a society that has kept it hidden, almost refusing it, we arrive at the mass madness in which we find ourselves now.
