After seven decades of life, we have many memories and feelings that are repressed. This man reaches in to expose them to the light. When I hear his music I am greatful. Thank you.

This song grabs me by the balls and makes me cry hard. I was addicted to heroin seven years and went through these exact emotions during my divorce at that point in my life. I’m remarried now, sober seven years, and my wife had my/our first child. A little gal named Cora has changed my world 150%.

*"I'm the kind of love it hurts to look at."* Damn!! The pain sears my heart every time I play this song. It sucks to imagine the situation that led John to write the line. But think about the strength he has to perform it.

This song is beautifully painful to listen to for me because this was my marriage. His song Cherokee has a verse that says “I’ve given up on ever being well”, that one stings as well.

As a singer songwriter myself, I wish I'd have penned these lyrics:
"Take me to the times where
We'd look up to the skies and
Climb up there and draw the thunder down"
    Pure genius.

Back road blues, from the hearts healing and minds troubled. The music from inside the damaged for the damaged so that they may have a guide along the way. Broken men and women trying to write out their battles on paper to release their grip from their souls. This is the most pure form of sharing experience that was hard.

This song moves me deeply, every time. I discovered him for the first time live. It killed me. He was playing on a double bill with Will Johnson. Anfortunately John didn't have records or else I would have snatched up a whole bunch right there on the spot. I've listened to the entire High on Tulsa Heat album almost exclusively, over and over, for the past few days. I'm not so sure i can get enough of his music.

The next day I learnt both of them and haven't looked back. Thank god for the bleeding hearts of the artists. Pure 🔥

"There is pain in this song', you said it well and you can feel it dripping out of his songs. Sometimes you'll see an artist sing a song like this with a smile on their face, and there's a total disconnect with the words being said and the emotional state of the person singing them. John feels every word coming out of his mouth each and every time he sings these songs.

Just realized this, it’s almost as if he is praying to a degree. “Come down from your mountain oh I miss your holy shoutin, these days I can’t make you make a sound”. Almost a sense of abandonment from God. By far one of the most lonesome/solemn/melancholy songs.

Discovered this guy last year, and I think he's just amazing. His lyrics are incredible, and you can feel every word the way he sings them. To be honest, his lyrics reminds me of some that Bob Dylan could have wrote, and that means a lot. A line like "I'm so damn good at sorrow", dear lord !
    Great artist

I found John Moreland’s music through RUclips two or three years ago, this was the first song I heard and I was floored. Then I listened through all the records on Spotify and they’re ALL GREAT. Sometimes I will have to take a break from them because they’re so intense emotionally to listen to.
It’s clear that he has a religious background and lost his faith in that way of preaching Christianity, but I think he is doing more for broken hearts than any preacher ever done. Heavenly choirs and fluffy wings never touched my heart, but this man bathe my heart in cleansing tears.

@@fuckgoogle6047 Elephant is a real gut punch of a song but not one I can listen to very often. Songs She Sang in the Shower, Last of my Kind, Live Oak, Streetlights, or Cover Me Up are probably my favourites but there are so many to choose from. His live performances are sometimes better than the studio versions.

I think that line means when you are not as desirable looks or mentally as most but fall in love just the same. I think this is a brilliant poem of of a man who found love and doesn't want to except its loss. He still feels the same way, even offers to change. But she doesn't care for him, enough to cry.
I thought it was pretty spelled out though?

This was purely awesome. A rare breed of a true artist.
Brother you should also check out Benjamin Tod (Also his band with his wife 'Lost Dog Street Band) if no one else has already brought that to your attention. Like Moreland , Benjamin writes and sings from a deep personal experience and isn't afraid to show the world the demons he has fought/fights and how it's affected his relationship. Whether you do a reaction to Ben's music or just a listen for yourself I'm sure you will enjoy his art. I was never really a country fan ( more of an old school punk) but damn Ben's music captivated me because like sooo many others you can relate to his hurt and pain one way or another.
