This game is now freeware and can be downloaded from 3D realms website. The download info says it's 1.1 version, but it's actually 1.0. However, Do NOT install 1.1 patch. If you do, the game will freeze at aquatic combat mission 6 boss. I learnt this the hard way and had to start the last episode from the beginning. Savegames did't work with "downgraded" version. Mostly the game runs around 60fps, but at the last episode most of the time half of the frames got dropped. I did tests before recording and the game seemed to run fine with about 20 000 cycles. With higher cycle settings intro + cutscenes would run way too fast. Only at processing I noticed frame dropping in the last episode. I didn't notice it during gameplay since the game already lags a bit while using built-in recording (although the resulting video runs smooth). It would've been fine with doubled cycles, but I don't feel like playing and editing the last episode 3rd time to fix that. YT audience shouldn't notice any difference, because the maximum frame rate there is 30fps.
There are 33 levels. First (shareware) episode has 6 levels and rest of the episodes have 9 each. Stellar Assault episode was played on Captain difficulty and the rest on ensign (easiest). Touching walls kill almost instantly on harder difficulty settings and sicnce most secrets (powerups) are located near walls it's frustrating trying to catch most on harder difficulty levels. Each level was completed at least twice and most of the levels were played several times. This game has a savegame function which can be used even inside levels. I only used saves between levels.
My personal opinion: Very nice shooter from DOS era. Almost as good if not as good as Raptor. In many ways Stargunner is more advanced which is easy to comprehend when considering there was over two years between these two games. Especially I like the soundtrack in this game. Still, not as good as Tyrian. The powerup system looks nice at first, but later it becomes too simple. There are only two accessory weapon slots to be used at a time with the main weapon and most weapons are not very usefull. Even though some weapons give advantages in specific levels you can pretty much upgrade the ship with overall best weapons after first two or three levels in each episode. However, I believe I managed to demonstrate all weapons. Different engine and satellite setups take big part of the weapon select screen even though mostly one type of engine and satellite will be used. The game has lots of content, but still little too long in relation to content. For example some looping with asteroid fields and such could've been skipped.
Trivia 1: Was the final release to be released under the Apogee banner. Apogee was later renamed to 3D realms.
Trivia 2: "Most of the art was developed on the Amiga using Deluxe Paint. In fact, the game was originally supposed to be an Amiga game with a PC version supposed to follow, but the PC version soon overtook and led development, and sadly the Amiga version was eventually dropped". [3D realms website]
Timepoints are for shop screen at the beginning of each episode. Mission briefings and debrifiengs can be found between episodes plus a short cutscene at the end of each episode (except Scout Missions).
Episode 1: 0.04:22 Scout Mission
Episode 2: 0.29:04 Stellar Attack
Episode 3: 1.06:17 Terran Assault
Episode 4: 1.42:31 Aquatic Combat -

I like how a star system defends itself from an invading star system by sending out one guy in one ship, and making him buy all of his upgrades. Anyway, great game!

They took their capitalism dead seriously.
Such a cool game! Wish more games like these were made today.
I love how many old games used to "use" same sound effect from different games. In the intro when an enemy ship is destroyed by hitting an asteroid, the sound effect is the same an unit called Zeus in the Total Annihilation does when shoots lightnings.
This game's sound track is plain awesome and super intense that conveys powerful feelings & thoughts!
Really good memories intense games. I used to play it on my dads old windows 95 vectra
I love this channel, so many classic games and in Longplay style....so glad I discovered your channel. :D
Reminds me of R-Type. Great game, especially love the music.
It looks better than R type more easy better graphics.
Awesome! A long-play of star gunner by one of the awesomest long-players, eino!

I remember me and my friends used to compete like crazy for the highest score on this game!! Good times...good times :)
Awsome been waitin on this for a bit
I can't be the only one who's always amused by the "Sheilds" typo on the boss health bars.
Downloaded the freeware version from the game website earlier today, and booted it up in DOSBox. Speed of the game was absolutely insane... well, it was untill I decreased the CPU usage to 1%. Then the game was actully running properly for me. You can affect the CPU usage by holding down CTRL and pressing F12 to increase, and F11 to decrease. I don't know if it will help you, or if you have already found a solution elsewhere, but nonetheless it's what worked for me. :)
decrease the CPU usage to like 1% and it will be alright! There is no frame cap on this game and today's CPU are 1000x more powerful than what they used to back in those days so the frames per second is going to be off the roof thats why you have to force a frame cap by reducing the CPU usage. Press CTRL+F12 to decrease CPU usage to minimum.
I'd been hoping someone would longplay this. I own the CD version, but haven't been able to get it to play properly on DOSBox without skipping and popping.
Looks and sounds great!
DAT MUSIC

Heroes n vilains from both sides.
Memories :P
Cool looking game.
So is this game playable on Windows 7 and later without using DOSbox emulator? I see there is a 2005 Freeware version officially released to the public by Apogee!
Nearly 20 years later and they have a very bad time making a shooter better than this...
By the way, anyone being able to run this in Win7? Need DosBox?
Needs DosBox, but works very well on it :)
20 years this game is brilliant there needs to be a remake developers what a fantastic, beautiful game you made 👍❤️
Such a shame this was played on easy.
Lol this game is never easy.
This game will break your balls on anything BUT easy. Unless you have some godlike reflexes. (Which I sure as hell don't lmao)
They need to remake this game.
i´ve played always on medium, admiral is suicide
Love this game, although cant get it to work on w7
Why everything must look so messy and over crowded?
It also reminds me of a GBA game
R-Type'ish game
