I'm 23 and recently bought an ST1300. I'm told by my friends my bike is an ugly old man bike. But if they rode my bike, they would quickly realize that it's awesome. No such thing as an old man's bike.

You're really smart buying an amazing road bike like that. Although the FJR1300 looks very sporty, and sharp, and fast. The ST1300 appears more similar to a Goldwing. It's a beautiful bike, but certainly doesn't have that hard racy look of the FJR1300.

I'm 26 and bought an old Triumph Sprint 955 for my first bike and my friends said the same at first. They eventually shut up when they found out they couldn't out accelerate me with their modern liter naked bikes, that I could easily keep up in the twisties, that I could ride for hours without fatigue unlike them and that I could stop for fuel every second time they do. Ride the bike you like, not the bike that makes you look cool.

I love my Gen2 2006 FJR. As you said, power to burn and fantastic sports tourer. It’s not uncommon to see these with over 200k Klms here in Australia running perfectly, and theres a reason the police here and in Europe use these big 4 cylinder bikes because they are bulletproof.

Comfortable, fast, great handling, and bullet proof reliability. I've ridden as much as 952 miles in one day, on my Fjr. Off and on, I think of getting an adventure bike. BUT, in addition to my FJR.

The FJR 1300 is an excellent bike, definitely not recommended for a beginner but once you learn how to ride it and get used to the weight and balancing, The bike becomes more pleasurable to ride and canyon carve. These bikes are mainly used as police bikes in Europe and countries in Asia so they are bulletproof. Yamaha has been using the same engine in this bike since its conception so these things are bulletproof.

I bought an 05 FJR a couple years ago with 13,000km or 8,000 miles on it for $4,0000 Canadian or $3,000 US. It’s such an awesome bike, it crushed the miles easily, loads of power, reasonable handling and comfort. I’ve owned R1’s GSXR 600’s and a Honda Superhawk, and the FJR is my fav bike to ride all day. Anything over 20-30 min and those sport bikes are painful to ride for me! I love my old man bike.

114K miles? Just barely broken in.
I own a 2013. It has the three "standard" mods: aftermarket windshield, handlebar risers, and a better seat. I say "standard" because probably 4 out 5 that spend any time on the road have those three mods.
A stock FJR makes just under 130 hp at the rear wheel and tops out at a smidge over 150 mph with saddlebags - on regular gas. And I love the OEM cruise control.

Yes, you were on top gear, not sixth gear because it has only five of them. The 6th was added on 2016. Excellent bike for 1200 bucks, no doubt. I'm jealous. What I love about this kind of bikes (fjr1300, kawi concours 14) is their reliability: 200 000 - 300 000 miles trouble free riding. Cars will never get even close of that, never. Just oil + oil filter + air filter + final drive oil. Once valve adjustment, that's it.

Speaking only for myself, and I’m starting to approach “old guy” territory, it would be nice to have the comfort to ride all day to get to good roads, and still be capable of carving corners when you get there. Plus, having that big engine so the bike isn’t working hard at 70-80 mph all day on the freeway is nice.

At least in my city, the cops have ST1300 Hondas, some Kawi Concourses, and just took delivery of some new FJRs. They ride clean and they ride fast. During funeral processions and their leap-frogging maneuvers, I've seen them do some things that would put most R6 riders into a RUclips wipeout compilation. Definitely enough to tell me I'm not getting away on my cafe racer.

Thunder Road - low-budget black-and-white B movie about backwoods moonshiners trying to outrace both the Mob and the Law became the best-loved, longest-running, and most financially successful film in Robert Mitchum's half-century career - a cult classic of the pre-home video era. For over 20 years after its 1958 premiere, Thunder Road could regularly be found on screens across the American South. Even as Mitchum’s career entered its twilight in the ‘70s, Thunder Road was still pulling in audiences, and profits. You should find a high mileage ST to go with the Concourse and the FJR. I have an ST1100 with 590000 kilometers.

I have owned 25 new bikes in my life and 8 used ones and that FJR your standing in front off is like the one i have! Mine is a 2005. It is the best bike i have ever owned . Mine has 88,000 miles and runs great. Nobody has ever seen or touched the engine, except the oil filter. I intend to buy another one for my next bike!

I just found one locally for sale with only 9k miles on it. Exact same year and color as the one he's riding here. I'm 60 yrs old and just under 5'7" so I hesitate just because of the seat height and weight of the bike, but it's definitely the type of bike I would prefer the most. A couple years ago I made the mistake of buying a 1987 Kawasaki ZL1000 and was told it ran great. Had it shipped from Pennsylvania to Hawaii only to find the crankcase full of gas and the carbs gummed up. Rebuilt the petcock so it won't leak fuel anymore and had a new seat made but never got around to the carbs. I'm tempted to just buy this FJR and let the older one go.

Riding a 03 fjr now here in canada
Lots of fun from 60 mph up to 115 mph
I chicken out after that. It pulls and pulls and pulls. Fyi . The old highway 2 in Montana was the last no limit.

I had a 2008 FJR for about a year. It was just to darn fast for me. It better to drive a slow bike fast rather then a fast bike slow. The issue was that the FJR felt like I was doing 20 mph and I looked at my speedometer and I was doing 100 MPH

  • @LuMack

The autobahn are only some highways in Germany, in the rest of Europe you can only do like 74 (120 km/h) the exception being Italy with 93 mph (150 km/h), oh and in Cyprus you can't go above 50 mph xD. So not that much sense existing those fast touring bikes, I think the sense is that you can go with a passenger and a lot of weight and still be able to pass a big 18 wheeler in sixth gear.

You need to get you Concours out and do a video on it too. Might be a bit biased after just getting one myself, but still. Be good to do, especially since you just drove it's usual competitor.

I was super torn between an fjr and the vfr1200x. I went with the vfr1200x because it was a smoking deal and could go on log roads. I’d love to own both one day. I still feel like the fjr would own the highways way better.

In some states of Australia, these are used as police bikes, replacing the old bimmers. I was told, years ago when they first got them, that the police wanted the same 0 -> 100km/h as an R1 from them.

I own an FJR1300, and the power is for fuel economy, not high speed. I cruise the highway at 135 Km/h, at 3200 rpm, and get the best gas mileage I've ever seen on a machine. If the FJR was a 600 cc, maintaining 135 Km/h would be about 7500 rpm, and gas mileage would be much worse.

Everyone I've known that's had an FJR complained about all the speeding tickets that came with it. Beware the old man on a FJR or Concours14. I'd love to see a head-to-head comparison of the $1200 100k+ Concours14 and the $1200 100k+ FJR, and see which one comes out better as a very long-term ride. Both of those bikes flat-out rule the turnpike.

I think the significant power in sport touring bikes is to compensate for you bringing extra weight with luggage and that you wanted to be sporty still even with a payload

Dude try and find a ZZR1200 Kawasaki they are great bikes for sport touring . I think it was the perfect ballance for sport touring it looked really cool it is a big bike but it's not like the FJ or the Concourse where yea they are quick bikes but they look like old man bikes with the jumbo tron wind screen .So if you ever run across one and have a chance throw a leg over .
