The latest gaming sales data has been released for May 2024, and with it comes the most recent numbers regarding overall current-generation console sales. Both the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X|S were released the same week back in 2020, but both have had different sales journeys.
According to Circana, the PS5 is outselling the PS4 by 8% through its first 43 months. On the other side of things, however, the Xbox Series consoles are behind the Xbox One in sales during the same timespan by 13%. They also sit behind the Xbox 360 during that same period.
Though percentages were given, the Circana data didn’t give specifically unit totals for the PS5 and Xbox Series. That said, VGChartz says that, as of June 1, the PS5 has sold 58.78 million units while the Xbox Series has sold 28.74 million.
For the month of May 2024, specifically, the PS5 led the way in hardware sales in both units sold and dollars. The Xbox Series came in 3rd in total units behind the Switch but 2nd in dollars. As a whole, however, year-on-year sales numbers have declined by a “double-digit percentage”.
The Nintendo Switch had the “most significant” fall year-on-year. Overall, sales are 30% lower year-to-date than in 2023.

Nintendo is making its biggest profits in its entire history, its making nearly DOUBLE the profits of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Nintendo now has Sony not only making games for Switch, they have Sony working for them making movies (Zelda).

the series x isn't the problem, it's microsoft's stupid decision to force all developers to prioritize the series s that's the problem. that potato console has ruined xbox and the push for game pass only further exacerbates the issue. current gen games are lower quality than they should be and no one wants actually buy the games thanks to game pass. if microsoft hadn't made the series s a weaker console and didn't shove everything onto game pass day 1 and had actual exclusive games then more gamers would have been incentivized to buy their console.

Atari was the leader gaming industry, they sadly ended up in crash economy and then thanks to God Nintendo saved the gaming industry. Sony was basically from TV, Walkman music, VHS, DVD stuff, Music industry and then they ended up being in gaming industry now. Microsoft was basically Windows software PC and then they ended up in gaming industry now. Frist because any substance to by a PS5 this gen has been lacking and will continue to be lacking for Sony (at least for these casual gamers). And many cases these PS4 owners don't care about those games Sony first-party makes. Heck even PS5 fanboys could not get enough people to buy the latest Ratchet game on PS5 to make it profitable without it being released to PC first. This lower adoption percentage numbers are true with every PS5 first-party game so far vs PS4 gen.
As for that 50% of PS4 owners still playing on that device instead of moving to a PS5 they are almost exclusively casual games. Those gamers primarily get their gaming experience playing one or a couple of the games that dominate the charts: Minecraft, Fortnite, COD, EA Sports, Roblox, 2K, etc. They aren't the big first-party one and done gamers by any means. If so that 50% would have been much smaller number by now with latest GOW, Horizon and Spiderman 2 not available on PS4 at all. But here they sit still on PS4. Those gamers love to play (Ie COD, Fortnite) ant those games are still going to be coming to PS4 and supported for years more. Sony has no control over that. Furthermore, if those millions of potential sales are not convinced now, what can Sony show in the future to make even more enticing? In fact right now, offering is a little sparse on what makes PS5 a needed item. Fact is Sony doesn't have something to sell them that makes it worth their while to spend $500. And that may be true for quite a while. Ironically, those millions you speak of may be the ones that when the time comes to move they will pick up a Series console because COD (a game they play religiously on their PS4 will be on Game Pass) that is the deal. Perhaps it will be in 2 years with a possible Xbox handheld. Casuals' allegiance to platform is committed up until the next iteration of COD or Madden. For a casual instead of a $500 for PS5 these more price conscious games will get a Series S and several year of Game Pass and play COD (with perks) and hundreds of games without that $70 yearly COD cost, whoops I mean $70 + play online PS+ sub it will cost them fare less to do the same on PS5.

@@FreshKitty the revenue Game Pass brings in after 3rd party expenses is the equivalent of Xbox selling 4-5 AAA games a year at 10m each sold. Xbox games, nor Nintendo or Sony, have ever done that so it's fair to say that Game Pass is far more lucrative than straight up selling first party games outright.

I played TLOU 1 and 2, GOT, Days Gone, Both Horizon Games...those are some of my all-time favorites. Then what? lol. Starfield was great by the way...got the 100% and over 400 hours in it. I played all 7 Halo games in a row...they are awesome. Anyways...Game Pass has tons of games always coming and here I am stuck using my potato Series S lol.

aint no way you think its more expensive than pc haha. It can costs hundreds if not thousands to get a high power gaming pc that can run modern games at 4k 60-120. not to mention upgrading parts and stuff like that. Buying a console for £400 that does 4k 60fps is much more affordable than going pc. Still pricey because everything is these days but i'd rather pay £70 and know im getting a very quality game like god of war or final fantasy 16 than pay 50-60 to get the same modern meh games we've been getting elsewhere.
@@seansmith877 that 4k/60-120 you speak of is if you're trying to go native lol those consoles are rendering these games at 900-1080p THEN upscaling them to a terrible 4k image via their cheap upscale techniques like checkerboarding.
A fair PC that can produce the same quality can be built new for $800 or used like I did for $500 which I gave to my kids. You need to remember that those consoles subsidized the pricing to help you out, Sony and Xbox openly admitted these consoles cost $200 more what they charged you so you're basically playing on a $700 console, Sony charges you $160 a year for their premium service to play with your friends on top of that, majority of games on the PlayStation store costs 10 to 20% more than on PC stores for the same games and PC has more free games on it than there are PlayStation 5 games Not to mention a library of games that goes way back to the '90s so basically any game you want bam at your fingertips. Any games that you love and you wish they were more content for? Well PC communities create basically DLCs we call modding. I have a $400 gaming laptop that's playing modern games at 60 FPS but last generation games at 120 FPS. I also have a $2,000 PC which is basically a PlayStation 5 SuperPro lol . Consoles are just entry level PCs with a couple exclusive games definitely not anything to write home to.

That's true.. Only around 50% of PS4 owners have upgraded to PS5. I'm one of them that did. But I have 2 other friends that are gamers and I'm the only one of us 3 and mainly because they're still releasing next gen games on their last gen console. That's not a good look if you ask me.

This is completely wrong, in its first four years (up until now) ps5 has sold nearly 40 million units, switch on the other hand has sold 55 million or more. Up until now, the nintendo switch has sold over 140 million consoles and COUNTING. The console is still pulling off at least 10 million sales each year so far, and will continue to sell until the next nintendo console releases. Ps5 on the other hand has been dying out in popularity due to lack of good games, expensive price, and the fact that the games that ARE good on there can be played on pc. Switch on the other hand has hundreds of extremely popular exclusives selling tens of millions of copies.
Or better yet, Nintendo will continue to sell and produce Switch units until people stop caring about the Switch or stop buying games for it. After all, not everyone will be able to upgrade to the next console right away, mostly within the first two years of its lifespan, and there are some that have no plans on upgrading and are content with what they have. Plus, some people just want great and high quality games for an affordable and cheap price, regardless of whether they are kids, teens, or adults and simply don't care about high end graphics graphics or anything.

PSP and VITA were solid those were their last truly good peices of hardware (If only they had supported VITA) , but Sony moving headquarters to America and fully prioritizing western appeal and Americanizing the Playstation brand was the last straw. In fact, there are still people playing on PS4 and buying new games for it, especially the Japanese people, where in Japan, more people play on PS4 than PS5 and there are some games that are PS4/Switch (PC in western markets only mostly) only in terms of consoles, with no PS5 version (like Pawapuro 2024-2025).

As a PS5 main, it makes me pretty happy to hear. I also hope more of those Japanese shmups that are currently only on the Switch (besides Steam) come to the PS5 because I’m a huge fan of shmups and I tend to play them over the weekend. There are a good number of them you can play on your PS5 (and hopefully more coming), PS4 backwards compatibility included. It’s also awesome to see more Japanese devs supporting the system.
Last I heard Nintendo was the only company really very profitable though.
Xbox is also very profitable too because the majority of their money comes from games and services.

Sony is getting ready to lose the marketing rights to one of the biggest franchises in gaming and they are supposedly crushing Xbox?
Not supposedly, they have. In fact, total annihilation is the best way to describe how bad the Playstation has beaten the Xbox in this generation so far. Not to mention, contracts were signed, so there is no guarantee Sony will lose marketing rights on anything if they have already paid for marketing rights.

So Sony can no longer foreclose COD on other platform buyers like they have in the past. BTW, Fanboys seem to lack the ability to look at financials' but stuck pounding chests with consoles sales at the be all of meaningful numbers. Especially lack s insight in landscape that that has changed in the last 10 years. For example, Sony had 27 billion in revenue for the year. But only 1.93 billion in OI for gaming. Meanwhile MS had 16 billion but 1.45 billion in OI in gaming (not including ABK which adds around another 2.2 billion for 3.3 billion in OI for the year), Sony realized around 34% more with twice the consoles. You should have at least 100% more if you are realizing profits at the same rate MS was getting off their gaming endeavors.. So that flex of consoles isn't what you think it is. And with Sony having multi-billion right off soon with PSVR2 losses well that bodes not too well for Sony gaming in general... Sony profit realization was especially bad if you look financials from December 2022 to December 2023 where Sony gaming had 6% relaxation off of revenue (where they wanted 20% and it was far less realization then MS had off their revenue. And it is the most obvious reason why Ryan was fired and Hiroki Titoki was put in charge.
Again Sony has at least twice the consoles (you guys keeping yelling that) but Sony gaming comes nowhere near the adoption rates for anything (software, services) that would be equated that they have twice the consoles. The at best of times during PS4 gen they get 60% (when twice the consoles should get 100% more profits). They are doing far worse now. In fact there is a reason the Titoki, the head accountant CFO/COO for Sony proper was put in charge of SIE immediately after Ryans firing (I mean retirement to spend more time with family). It isn't because Sony is crushing it in gaming. Consoles sales that don't return value are not what Sony wants. Fanboys may care about console sales. Sony (like Microsoft has done for 8+ years) is more concerned about MAU (monthly active users) that is better determinant of success not consoles sold that are never turned on or are not buying anything. That is one reason Ryan was going heavily into GAAS because that is the easiest way Sony can grow in the console space. With overall increasing expenses and the adoption percentage down this gen for Sony that does make for wining in the gaming space. It is one of the reasons Xbox realizes far greater percentage of profit off far less consoles base. MS built their ecosystem around supporting MAU. Sony has not. In fact Sony's' high MAU number for 2023 was 118 million monthly unique users and that was below Microsoft 'average unique monthly user number of 120 million and far below Microsoft gaming high for 2023 of 200 million. So, while you count consoles that are never turned on the real success is users that are actively using the ecosystem and the company building around supporting that growth and that won't be the company stuck treating PS as the only first-class citizen.
IF Sony were really killing it financially the stock would not be so depressed. Investors see what is happening and are reacting accordingly. The stock is down 14 billion from February 2023 when Sony announced bad financials for the year (6% realization on revenue, decline software, less overall sales of PS5 then projected by 6 million), In fact Sony is down 44 billion from its all-time high 2 1/2 years ago. That is specifically because of gaming more than any other financial metric that drives Invesment interest. Sony is not killing it, definitely not compared to the competition. Switch which lives in its own little kingdom and Microsoft who is building around being ruler of the gaming oceans rather than just the space of consoles. Whereas Sony is still stuck trying to live the good old days of being king of a pond when numbers have long shown that good old days are not be possible anymore.

Switch is only dethroning the PS2 because the gaming market is much larger today than back in the early 2000s. I mean the crappy Xbox One still managed to sell over 50 million, back in the day they would have never surpassed 10 million. Imo, the Switch is a good console but doesn't deserve 1st place when the PS2 had so much more to offer and full backwards compatibility. You could play over 8k games on it and none of them were mobile shovelware or indie "shitposting" games masquerading as real games.

I love my ps5 and my switch. First of all, the switch is at about 140 mil sold. 2nd, after about 3 1/2 years the ps5 has sold approx 55 million units. After 3 years and 1 month the switch sold approx 55 million units. The demand for both consoles is about the same relative to its release. Sales on the switch slowing down when hardware wise it was almost outdated when it came out is ridiculous. People love the Nintendo exclusives. I bet Mariokart 8 deluxe (a port of a 2014 game) is a top 10 best selling game this year. Ghost of Tsushima is a great selling game (mostly for ps4) is at 9.73 million. The best selling ps5 game right now is Spiderman 2 at approx 11 million copies sold. MK8D is at 61.97 million. No sony exclusive will ever get the attach rate as Nintendo games on the switch in the near future. The idea the ps5 is crushing the switch doesn’t make any sense and we were baited to comment.
The Playstation 5 is not selling as well as it should because the PS4 is still very much alive and kicking. Still getting a ton of new games releases on that 10-year old system, even this year. Many players still haven't switched over even tough the PS5 is compatible with almost the entire PS4 library.
The Xbox brand, on the other hand, has experienced a decline. I was surprised to learn that despite their early fumbles, the Xbox One still had a respectable amount of consoles solds (around 60 million). The Xbox Series S / X seems to have a userbase that's currently half of the Xbox One audience.

We've had 4 big Sony exclusives that have released this year so far (FFVII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Helldivers 2) to Xbox's 1 (Hellblade II). Sony has more to come this year too. Nintendo releases more often as well (Princess Peach, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion 2 port) this year so far with several more to come too. Gamepass or not, a console is useless without games to play on it.
