    Eric! You were on fire at the start of this with your Oxford comma discussion and amazing duck voice, and then you threw it all away when you dismissed "spriggy". That was pretty much the perfect word for Kyde to use to describe the sauce. haha.
    Amazing video as always!

    it's nice to have this video of kumamoto castle (even though you guys didn't love it). it's going to be years before anyone can get in there again since the earthquake damage a couple years ago.

    Hello! I just found your RUclips Channel recently and I am now hooked. I have been showing your adventures to my co-workers here at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington D.C. (most of whom were stationed with me in Yokosuka) and now we are all avid fans! Thanks so much!

    Welcome to my hometown, Miyazaki! Hope you guys had a good time! And there is a just reminder. The leaf which was putting on the salad of Chicken Naban as a dressing was "Shiso". In English, it's a perilla leaf. It is popular to use as dressing for salad in Japan. And I'm glad you guys like chicken Nanban, which is my favorite!

    • @kydeanderic

    The thing I like the most about this channel, is that I'm usually a little reluctant to click on the video because it always a 30-60 minutes long, but they are not "difficult" to watch, and I really enjoy them.
    and then, I click on a 10 minute long video and after 2 minutes long, I'm tired... :P
    And the difference with the oxford comma (as I understand it (a non native english speaker)) on the coffee thing is that "black and bitter" means it's both flavors in one can, "black, and bitter" means there are two different flavors in two different cans...

    Awesome New Years gift 🎁 guys!! Thxz fo the great timing on the release of part2 👍....feel like a kid unwrapping a gift for the holidays as every video from you two are 😉 !! Only sad thing is vid is under an hour and that's going to go by super fast 😏
    Hoping you two enjoy Vietnam as much as I did .... Be careful as sum of the locals there can b very charming as they try to over charge you for services or crafts, be weary of taxi & Xe Om drivers as well ....... while other locals are genuinely nice and go out of their way to really be helpful and welcome you to their village, town and country.....
    Do try and visit the towns of Hue & Nha Trang if you can as my memories of these two towns stand out foodie wise and sight seeing wise.....tho the whole of Vietnam from the very north to the south has many nooks and crannies of beautifulness 👍 either way I know you guys will have a spectacular time as u always do in your travels in south east asia.......many miles of scooter-swaggering fun to come 😎 and a Vietnam vlog to also come down the road in 2015 !! YaY!!

    I am sorry to hear that Kumamoto Castle did not impress you.
    After the WWII, Japan (and world) finally realized that old castles and monuments which have historical values are assets to attract people for tourism (after casually destroying them for old style or uselessness, or war). Because world in general are too poor, they did not have money or time to enjoy traveling but became wealthy enough to do it after the WWII.
    So Japan started rebuilding old castles they destroyed. Many castles rebuild in 1960s did not have much consideration or guidelines of how to rebuild. So many of them are build with concrete like Osaka castle (or Kumamoto Castle). But people started realizing if you rebuild it also need quality too. So the rebuilding castles in recent years became very authentic way. They studied materials used and try to make it as authentic as possible. Okinawa's Shuri Castle rebuilded in 1992 is the best example.
    Because Kumamoto Castle has many pictures of the original castles. They thought they can rebuild closed to the original. So recently they started the project to rebuild the entire Kumamoto castle following the exact original plan and original materials. It is still in process and will complete soon. But the area which was build in 1960s will probably remain there until they think it will be necessary to change it.

    0:10:18 So they call it potage? That's french for stew. Not quite a porridge but I can see why it would be adopted as a word for it because a good stew/potage tends to be thick and rich.
    0:18:07 I think you're talking about Shiso. A friend of mine has a back garden full of shiso and thyme, greek oregano, spearmint, lemon balm, and others. A previous resident apparently was an herb connoisseur, and they grew wild after they left. You sit down in the grass and you're surrounded by herbal scents.
    If you were disappointed by Kumamoto-jo, Osaka-jo castle is pretty much the same, because they rebuilt it and it's a completely modern building on the inside- It has an elevator. I was shocked.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  9 лет назад +1

      ikaruseijin01 Is that their way of elevating the past? Yeah, we were talking about shiso! -Kyde

    • @ikaruseijin01
      @ikaruseijin01 9 лет назад

      Kyde and Eric Ahhh Elevating the past. «ba-dum-tiss» Well I think they rebuilt the castles with genuine intent to preserve the past but I think they figures "well the old structure is gone, so might as well do a modern building with a facade" because that would be quicker/easier to do. I also think they wanted to showcase their modern technology. Like the logic behind Kyoto station. They wanted to wow tourists with a super modern building... despite the fact it's in Kyoto, the millennia-old former capital of Japan... and it's kinda out of character... The people building it thought the wow factor of the modern would outweigh anything else. I think that's why the castles were rebuilt that way.
      In the case of Osaka, it could be worse. They could have put up something 1960's futuristic interpretation of the castle with neon and pastel colours. If Dotombori avenue is any guide...

    Love your self-documentaries guys... you have me laughing often and wishing i had a reason (or partner) to re-visit Japan... when you were trying to work out the taste i was saying out loud DILL.. (just before you said just that, oh and I thought Ranch as well.. nice!) not sure why or how... must be the high definition that projected more than we (humans) thought possible in the past.. :) BTW can i ask what camera/rig are you guys using? a GoPro? and kind of stabilizing rig? Just curious... it makes all the difference i think to why you guys are so watchable (apart from your cool and casual chemistry )!
    Oh and do you guys know that DayZ is in fact a computer game? - I figure you already were told about that.. but yep sure enough Japan has named a car after a computer game - Zombies Included! (not you guys :p) not sure which came first the game or the car name

      @kydeanderic  8 лет назад

      +Tim Korving Hi Tim, glad you found us and are enjoying the videos! We don't really have a camera "rig", we just shoot with a Sony DSC-HX50V. It does amazing auto-stabilization and fits in my pocket. We aren't fans of GoPros for what we need, all the extra accessories, fish eye lens, lower audio quality and lower bitrate recording don't work nearly as well as our trusty little Sony. However, I wouldn't want to strap our Sony to a body mount and do extreme sports, so as most things each tool has it's place. Haha. -E

    gosh darn the quality is amazing.. what camera are you using? What format does it record in? Do you convert it before editing? What do you edit the footage with? What format do you upload it in? 1080p 60fps?? wow. Would take ten years to upload a video this long in australia with our average upload of 1mbps.. what upload speed do you have?

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  9 лет назад +4

      Designandrew We have a Sony DSC-HX50V camera which shoots in 1080p60fps. We edit with Sony Vegas and render and upload at a very high bitrate. This 40minute video was 7GB when I uploaded it. The render process at the absurdly high bitrate is what is time consuming, not the uploading on this super fast Japanese internet. -Eric

      Kyde and Eric I'm glad someone asked about the video quality 'cause I was wondering about it too. It's super smooth and has some great depth comparing to your early videos or most vids I watch on YT.
      Anyway, I'm heading back to Japan for the second time in 2 years with my GF for holidays and I must say your videos are a must-see for people travelling there! Keep up the good work guys!

    Dear Eric, I am a fan. So please know I offer my opinion in a truly friendly way here. I must express that sometimes sly anatomical references can offend. I don't offend easily, but the couple of anatomical comments that slipped in there on this vid left me cringing. It's not that our awesome anatomy is bad. On the contrary! It's not that humor is bad - I SUPER enjoy the levity you bring. It's not that being real is bad - we're all human beings here, in each of our human bodies ;-), right? It's that HOW we refer to things (anatomical or gender related) can make it SOUND like WE have something bad going on inside our attitudes. Am I making sense to your sensibilities, my friend? I do hope so ;-). Thank you for hearing me out, and for considering this. Peace

    I would trade my soul to be in Japan and try the food you guys test. For some reason I'm now intrigued by that "pussy power" ramen shop. (Is it wrong that I decided to call it that?) Also, I think the Oxford comma (or serial comma) is more often needed when a series of 3 items or more are listed. For example - "The coffee is black, bitter, and creamy."

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  9 лет назад +1

      Joe Blow The oxford comma is a debated subject where others might write the same sentence "The coffee is black, bitter and creamy." I was taught the way that I noted, but I really want to enforce the way that you wrote it! And your ramen shop title was on point... or should I say on pussy? -Kyde

    • @howdyouknow
      @howdyouknow 9 лет назад

      Kyde and Eric I completely agree on the comma point. It just feels more proper and makes more sense. I'm just glad you liked my perception of the ramen shop and I'll leave it at that without further comment. :P

    There's a question for you, Is Dill a common flavour in Japan? Like, It clearly exists but do you encounter it often?
    Btw, That was an interesting thought about the castles and them having the same/similar designs and protection. I guess they had spies back then aswell, And in a slightly more deadly way that translates into moder society aswell. I mean, Most countries have guns that fire bullets and airforces and what not.
    Also, That is an unfortunate part about Japan I've noticed. They're not very good at preserving things the way they were. Goes for a lot of old houses and stuff aswell, like "screw this 500 year old house, boom, parking garage!". Its very unfortunate.
    All female ramenshop? Definatively puting that on the "must go there" list!

    Hey Kyde and Eric. I have bad news, where my favorite restaurant and dive bar in Okinawa are no more. They have been replace with all things a Baskin Robbin and music store. I guess the passing of time things change. Sorry. Also Kyde I was paid while the Air Force to actually jump out of a perfectly good Aircraft. I have a total of 102 jumps. 50 of those were High Altitude Low opening, Those were cool 43.000 feet your chute automatically opens. Go for it. You won't regret it. Just do a couple of tandem jumps and I bet you will get hooked.
