I have deleted my Instagram and my TikTok accounts, because the amount of consumerism that is pushed on those social media is insane. Also, at 27 I finally realized that the interactions we have on those apps are mostly meaningless, whereas in our daily life we are lonelier than ever, and lack true connections...

Where I used to live I had a blood orange and tangering tree. I put an add in Marketplace for free blood oranges. A woman from Germany loved them. No fresh oranges in Germany . We had an arrangement where I would put a couple bags og oranges by my door, she would pick them up and leave me a burrito from a local Mexican restaurant. I only met her once. We did that for 5 years.

I have heard people stating " I have to have a dishwasher" can't survive without one. I had 1 removed it. Why? Must rinse dishes or clog drains. Very seldom look clean. Then you have to load and unload. Faster and easier for me to wash and air dry. Less energy, less water, less electricity, irregardless of ads. Saves me time and my dishes are clean. We all have different priorities of life.

Mom always invites hords of visitors for weekends and of course they eat and drink. Wtihout the dishwasher I would spend entire days an probably nights washing dishes. We load and unload 4-5 loads per day. But it needs to be top quality and of course it needs regular maintenance. We clean, unclog regularly and buy special liquid to clean at an empty cycle.

I have a food pantry and know first hand about the $90,000 trucks and suv that people claiming to be “low income” drive to pick up free food. No, they didn’t borrow it. No, they didn’t just lose a job. These same people drive their high dollar cars every month and report zero income just to get free food. I see them in all the free food lines in town. That IS their job-to go to every free food event in the county. They turn around and sell it. That’s the scam and no one will let us verify income. If we try, and believe me we have, we are told we are not allowed to verify. All Food pantries have to accept verbal statements less we “offend “ anyone. It’s a total crock and takes from those who really need it.

I am living in the Netherlands so being frugal is a way of life. Having debt or a credit card is very unusual in my age group (in my 60's now). Neither is fastfood and not cooking from scratch.
On the other hand: most mothers here dont work fulltime when having kids.
Actually most people here work 4 days a week (men and women) In the Netherlands that is considered full time. Friday is usually the designated day to go shopping, do the garden, take your dogs on an extra long walk, ironing away a stash. We do exchange info about bargains with the neighbours, friends,in the supermarket and with family (no coupons exist here)The weekend is for family and relaxation, hobbies, being outdoors. We are avid sellers and buyers of used stuff. We dont give expensive presents, we give eachother an "experience".

Sometimes the kids get lessons in a forest or collect early in the morning the things and animals washed on the seashore. Also from the age of appr 5 they get swimming lessons very early in the morning (am not a morning person, but sometimes you have to sacrifice a habit) That was unusual in the USA they said. On a "negative" note ... they werent too charmed by the dutch habit of saying what you think. Lol!!!

So I left my horrendously stressful job in July and found a great new one in Oct - less money but way better lifestyle - my life has changed. Today, they told us they have to make redundancies… I’m so glad I’m frugal - no debt and I have savings. I had two trips planned and have cancelled both. I’m disheartened but, because of my frugality, I’m certainly not terrified. It could be so much worse… imagine being in debt with huge bills and then thinking you might be unemployed. I have to focus on that. Thanks for all the advice PP.

I have had to change my friends because so many are "major consumers " and can't understand my lifestyle. I live a frugal lifestyle without purchasing processed foods. I truly don't buy clothing. I want to look "poor" keeps me safe. I was at Walmart last week and purchased a shirt on clearance for $5. I am happy with that. I needed medical supplies and. Walmart was cheapest. My home is 1200 square feet. My friend the same age has 4000 square foot house. Has to have help because it is too much house. We are seniors. We all have different priorities mine are food, clothing and shelter. Paying off medical bills. My college degree got me out of poverty and allowed me to have a great life. Education is important that can be made by a trade school or community College. Does not require a 4 year expensive degree. I worked as an RN for 40+ years. Received bonuses of $10,000. I worked with 4 year degree nurses. We all made the SAME salary. Research before getting any training/education.

I hear ya on people making things hard to donate!!! After my mother passed I had a lot of furniture that I just wanted to donate to get it gone rather than sell it. This company that takes furniture and sells it to people in need. They told me they wanted the items and then never came to pick them up and I don’t have a moving van, so I was like forget that!!! And now I am just gonna give them away free on Marketplace

Also, when I worked at a school a neighborhood lady brought a bunch of lemons in from her tree. The staff was excited to get them and everyone took some home.

Yes, I just watched a young, British, born into wealth lady, on RUclips. She went to have tea and model clothes at "an event" in some very fancy old English estate. It was all very ornate with gold on the moldings and panels. I thought to myself...."That's pretty and all but, would I want all that even if I was incredibly wealthy?". The answer was no.

In elementary school, we learned how to save and every Friday, the class would go to the bank and make a deposit into our passbooks. We also studied stocks in 5th grade. We had to choose a stock and follow it. I believe people have to educate themselves and not blame corporations for consumerism. They want to make money. It's our job to decide if what they're selling is what we want or need. That's on us if we don't make educated decisions.

We all know about supply and demand. If we decide to consume less, prices will drop because of supply. More and more I choose to avoid purchasing products I don't need or want. With regard to our food, most processed food isn't food, but chemicals and ingredients that our bodies can't break down. Keeping up with the Joneses has done real harm to us.

We got out of debt about 10 years ago. For a while I was paranoid about getting back in debt. But then we built up our emergency account, and when we use it we replace what we used. I find that depression is a thing of the past. Mental peace was a kind of surprise bonus. We never charge. We do use our credit cards but the amount is deducted as if we’d written checks, so no surprises there either. I didn’t start doing this until I was over 60. Thanks Dave Ramsey, Prepper Princess, Money Mom and Austin Williams! I love RUclips!

Be careful judging others. You don’t know their circumstances. I was recently put on a medical leave from my job. I drove my $42,000 SUV (which is a perk with my job) to the food pantry because after living expenses were paid with short term disability, I didn’t have any left to buy food. I wiped out savings from a medical issue last year.

Invest young …old folks have to stay very low risk to pay property taxes. Save each day and spend only on the essentials. Having money is a stress buster.
