I live in Oregon 8b, grow mostly Desert King, and King varieties. They seem identical to me so far. The King is from Saudi Arabia, via a Portland dentist that did work for the royal family there and was gifted a cutting. He gifted my father a cutting, back about '66. To me, they taste the same, grow the same, propagate the same. Those that know genetics far better than I, say that with genetic sequencing, there ARE differences, but phenotypically the same. I highly suspect that the ancestry of the DK found in CA in '30, had its origin with this strain King, or its close ancestor.
Desert King is probably a selection of the old Italian Filacciano Bianco fig. Nevertheless it's a real American. Looking forward to my first harvest of DK...
Im 5b and we get -5f every year. I dont think even michurinska would survive that but highly doubt an established fat dk tree would survive without protection. Others say most figs can do 15f without protection if dormant but some can do 10f. My exp seems to be that 15 is ok for a dormant fig.
Adam, you sure convinced me on getting one of those Desert Kings
Looks delicious, thanks for mentioning All the good information

How soft does the breba have to be to pick it?
As long as your finger slightly sinks into the skin, you are good to eat it.
hello, I just got a new baby desert king fig tree... can you tell me how I protect it for the winter ? I also live in Northeast NJ. Thank you.
How does the taste compare to other breba varieties?
Also how many did it produce this year?

How do you keep it alive in the winter?
they stay alive unprotected in washington state, its the most popular fig here, and its colder here
