Great review Phil very thorough. Thank you for the shout out to my review too. It really is an awesome lens that is for sure, one of the best Viltrox have put out. Be interesting now to see if Nikon respond? Thanks for sharing the video and I think it’ll be popular with vloggers. Cheers 🍻 👍🙏
Thank you, Adrian! It is really nice for sure. Nikon is lacking in the ultrawide department for their Z DX cameras. The AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR is a good choice for them if you want to adapt. I think they will eventually make a native Z version of that lens but I doubt they will ever make a FAST ultra-wide like this Viltrox 13mm 1.4
Thank you! The only problem with doing a lot of lens reviews is you have to have a lot of lenses. LOL I do enjoy doing them. The R7 will be more of a watch me use this camera for a few years series instead of one video. LOL
Thank you, Chris! You never know when a lens is going to be good at starbursts, I was happy to see this one also featured that quality along with all the rest of its good points.
PHIL-- Go! Braves!! Go! Kasey! Wonderful video! and Go! Viltrox!! I got a Call from B&H and I"m getting my new Z 100-400 4.5-5.6 tommorow Mon 6/13/2022! Phil I'm very excited! Can you blame me! Randy Bocksnick(MT)
Lol, yes, I had a limited time to get this review done so I just fit it in wherever I could. I thought it made for an interesting environment. Thank you!
I ordered this based on reviews from other channels. Your review has given me added confidence for purchasing this lens. It will compliment my 18-140z lens with my zfc. Both lenses use a 67mm filter. Your image of the river and bridge is just gorgeous!
Very good video, best I’ve seen I think on this lens on the Z mount. The photos are fantastic, I may get this for my Z30. Did you have electronic stabilisation on ?
I just ordered mine yesterday for my Sony system. I will have it today can't wait to put it through its paces. This may be one lens I own 2 copies of one for Sony and one for Fuji. Thanks so much for the review!
Thank you! I used three mics for this video. During the early parts of the video, Heather filmed with the DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo and I used the wireless mic that comes with that kit. During the photo presentation, I used a Rode Video Micro. When I was testing the Viltrox for video on the Z fc I used the original Rode Wireless Go system.
Got this lens earlier this week, and was surprised how much detail I could get with it. Even on the Z6 with a automatic format change (crops to DX) it's still getting a phantastic angle, and 10MP are also enough for a 4k screen. As I'm planning with both the Z50 and Z6 for my next holidays this lens will definitively make it into the backpack. Beside the 40/f2 from Nikon the best value lens I have seen so far.
Enjoyed your video. It would be curious to see it matched up against the Nikon 20mm (f or z) on a full frame. Loved the Bridges shot and all your portraiture.
You mention in the description it’s a lens you can get with a Fuji mount too. I want to get this for my Nikon Z50 (which sadly needs ribbon servicing $$$), but if Nikon doesn’t get IBIS in the next few years is there a cheap way to use this lens on Fuji or Sony cameras?
Hello Phil. I have problems with my Viltrox 13mm on my Z50. When I updated the firmware to 1.0.3 the autofocus of the lens wont work sometimes. Did you updated yours?
Thanks, Mike! Viltrox contacted me a long time ago about reviewing the 23mm f/1.4 and I missed the email. Later I found it and agreed to try it out. After I loved that lens I asked them to review anything else they had and eventually I reviewed the 33,56 and now the 13mm f/1.4 lenses for Nikon Z DX. I really hope they make Canon RF-S versions of these lenses because they are really great and reasonably priced.
I would say that if you point this at some sort of a perfectly straight grid line chart you might save a slightest bit of distortion but I’m more of a real world use kind of guy and it looks great to me I did no straightening on the bridge photograph and it looks straight to me.
Great review Phil very thorough. Thank you for the shout out to my review too. It really is an awesome lens that is for sure, one of the best Viltrox have put out. Be interesting now to see if Nikon respond? Thanks for sharing the video and I think it’ll be popular with vloggers. Cheers 🍻 👍🙏

Great review Phil. Loved all the images. The landscape of the bridge, lights, and water was beautiful!
Thank you, Bill!
What an awesome lens and a great review Phil! That shot of the bridge is amazing, love it!
Thank you, Peter! I hope they make a version of this lens and the rest of their APSC lineup for the new RF-S Canon cameras!
Greetings from Ireland. Great review. Well done, Phil and Kasey
Thank you, Martin!
Those bridge shots are wonderful.
Thank you, Ron! I've been making photos from that location for years. Every night you get a slightly different sky.
Man I think lense reviews are something you need to do more of! Looking forward to seeing your review of the R7 and possibly the R10 😉💪
Thank you! The only problem with doing a lot of lens reviews is you have to have a lot of lenses. LOL I do enjoy doing them. The R7 will be more of a watch me use this camera for a few years series instead of one video. LOL
Thanks for the review! The portraits were great. I loved the bridge shot!!!
Thank you, Stephen!
Those starbursts on the bridge are freaking fantastic! And your daughter is very photogenic! Great stuff, Phil.

Thank you, Randy! That's awesome! I hope you enjoy that new lens. I have heard nothing but good things about it!
HA! Never seen an unboxing in a public place lol. Love the long exposure shot at the end.

Great lens review and impressive photos.
Thank you, Leon!
Very good video, best I’ve seen I think on this lens on the Z mount. The photos are fantastic, I may get this for my Z30. Did you have electronic stabilisation on ?
No stabilization on the still images. Thank you!
Electronic stabilization was off during the handheld video clip test as well.
I just ordered mine yesterday for my Sony system. I will have it today can't wait to put it through its paces. This may be one lens I own 2 copies of one for Sony and one for Fuji. Thanks so much for the review!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy it! Also, I hope they make this and some of their other APSC lenses for Canon's new RF-S APSC cameras.
@@PhilThach me too I think it would be a great lens for an R7 hopefully I get mine soon
Great review Phil. Can you tell me what you are using for audio (microphone setup), it sounds really good. Thanks for your time and review.

Fantastic! I used it last Wednesday night on my Z fc to do an hour long live stream and it did great. I’m glad you are enjoying it!
The image is perfect for vlogging
Thanks Phil, I may get this lens for my Z50. It’s cool that it’s auto focus, the Artisan lenses are manual focus.
Thanks, George! I have a couple of the TT Artisan lenses for my Z DX cameras. One of them I really like, the other one not so much.
Nice review Phil looks to be another great lens from Viltrox...
Thank you! This may be the best one yet!
This could turn out to be great Astro photography lens for DX cameras
Agreed. I'm hoping to try some Astro with it later this month if we get clear skies around the next new moon.
Well done….I‘m waiting a long time for this kind of lens for my Z-FC.😊😊👍🏼👍🏼
It is really something special! Thanks for watching.
great review!! and thank your daughter also, very pretty and she did a great job
Thank you!
Awesome content Sir. More power to your channel
Thank you!
Great review! Looks like a fantastic lens!
Thank you, Tim! It really is. I hope they make an RF-S version of this lens and some of the other APSC Viltrox lenses I've tested.

I don't think you can use the Nikon version on a Fuji or Sony but Viltrox offers this in Nikon Z, Fuji X, and Sony E mounts.
Hello Phil. I have problems with my Viltrox 13mm on my Z50. When I updated the firmware to 1.0.3 the autofocus of the lens wont work sometimes. Did you updated yours?
I haven’t updated mine.
Looks like a great Ultra Wide for the Z50 and Zfc. Hopefully more 3rd party lenses coming to the Z mount.
It's really nice and reasonably priced. Thanks for watching!
LOL I don't have a Nikon but I enjoyed the lens review. Did Viltrox contact you to do a review?
Thanks, Mike! Viltrox contacted me a long time ago about reviewing the 23mm f/1.4 and I missed the email. Later I found it and agreed to try it out. great video
Thank you!
can i get a link to a nd filter for this? knf
Hi Phil! Is this lens good for group photography indoors? Do you have any recommendations for my Nikon z50 for a small to big group for indoors..
If you need a wide angle in low light, I can’t think of a better lens than this one currently on the market for Nikon Z DX.
@@PhilThach Thank you!👍
Nikon Z30 is here
Yep! It wasn't at the time I made this video.
Is it better than z dx12-28 vr ?
If you need a fast aperture then yes, if you need a wide range of focal lengths at slower apertures then no.
I see no distortion on this lens , am i wrong ? .
I would say that if you point this at some sort of a perfectly straight grid line chart you might save a slightest bit of distortion but I’m more of a real world use kind of guy and it looks great to me I did no straightening on the bridge photograph and it looks straight to me.
I thought they one did it for Sony mounted lens
Yes, they first made this for Fuji-film and now they have made versions for Nikon Z and Sony E APSC cameras.
