This was really one of the best West German teams assembled. The loss of a creative genius in Bernd Schuster and Rummenigge's thigh injury was the difference between making the final in 1982 and potentially winning it.
I fully agree, and they were also totally exhausted after their nerve-wracking encounter against France in the semifinal whereas Italy had a much smoother sail against a Polish side that clearly missed the brilliant Boniek. The Germans would have had a much better chance under different, more conducive circumstances.

A lot of coincidence Austria was in the same group with former West Germany in the 1982 World Cup qualifiers. Because in the 1982 Spanish Cup, West Germany and Austria were in the same group B, along with Algeria and Chile. Chile was already disqualified with three defeats, but the biggest fight was West Germany, Austria and Algeria who had the same number of victories (2 for each), and the three teams had 1 defeat in the general classification. Algeria claims to this day that they were harmed in the West Germany-Austria game. If Austria won, Algeria would take the spot for the next stage along with Austria, it would be a feat for an African team. However I saw this game that for me was the worst game in the cup. Even the "panzers" winning 1 x 0, started to play passively. Here in my homeland [Brazil], there is an expression for this type of combined game, it's called "relatives game". For a team that did an impeccable 1982 World Cup qualifier, the images don't lie, they almost saw their standings go down the drain in Spain.
German players by nature have a sense of responsibility to do.. That is not there in the English team.. Germans are disciplined and responsible individual and not just players they don't just depend on their coach they always try to search for new ways to win even if the coach fails them.. They win it for the country and coach as well
