  • I go through the New York Times list of the top 100 books of the century so far to see how many I've read and which ones are on my TBR list. I also name drop ‪@saintdonoghue‬ toward the end of the video, but it's just a mention without too much fanboy stuff dropped in.

Wow, I've read so few of these. The blockbusters: Potter, King, Hunger Games. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a great one, sort of a detective story, a family history, just a fascinating true story. Lincoln in the Bardo was a tremendous depiction of grief, and amazing in all other ways as well.

@WordsWordsWords_WmBolz I was surprised and pleased that I'd read as many of these as I have, but 17 of of 100 is actually a pretty low percentage. I'm looking forward to learning more about and reading some of the books that I've neglected. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Hey Randy, new viewer here, just wanted to say I’m glad I found your channel and I enjoy your frank commentary style very much!
Of the books on this list I have read, Wolf Hall is without a doubt the best. Just finished it last week, and planning to read the sequel as soon as I can. A little hard to get into, but fantastic once I did.
    Thanks!

Great rundown Randy. Have only read a few from the critics list, but plenty from the readers list 😅

@ExtraT82 Thanks. It was fun to get an idea of how close (or how far) my finger is from "the pulse", although I think judging by this rundown fun the New York Times list is probably pretty inexact anyway.

Nice thing about this list is that these books are free to read from the library. The Tomorrow Tomorrow one was gifted to me a while back but I haven't read it yet.

That is a lot of books! I don't read much current fiction. I'm just a pulp reader, and most of my favorite authors are dead, but I have read three books on the list. "11/22/63," which is one of my favorite reads from last year, "Gone Girl," and "The Road" by McCarthy. I enjoyed "The Road" but really disliked "Blood Meridian." I think he's just a little over-rated.

I've only read three of these, The Road, The Passage of Power, and Life of Pi. When I first read the list, I think I only recognized something like 15 of the books. It made me feel incredibly out of touch, and I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I've been meaning to get to The Looming Tower, and I'd like to give Atonement a try one of these days. I do have Bolano's books on my shelves, but I've been too afraid to read them because I once read a review by someone who said he felt like Bolano was the only author he'd ever read who actively hated his readers.
