    Hi, Just a small invention I made and I'd really would like to share with you is how to make the best needles for stiching light leather like sheep or any of these small predators. First of all, go to the pharmacy and get the biggest hollow needle they have, I know, they are going to think you are crazy and probably won't understand what you need immediately, but after explaining a bit they will get behind your idea and what you need. Just say you need a sharp needle that doesn't stretch the hide open but makes a small cut, it's the same what others use to pierce ears and noses. Get a few of these you'll waste the first ones for sure. Then cut away the plastic with an angle grinder so you get a tip that is maybe 1 to 1,5 inches long, secure it, tip down, between two wooden pieces in a swivel vise and get it glowing uning a lighter or a small blow torch. Then you take your needle, which you have put in a power drill, tip pointing out, and press it gently but fast into the hollow back side of the, still very hot, needle. This is a process of two or three seconds and you have to stop drilling immediately once you have put it as far as it feels ok, otherwise you will twist off the hollow needle. The hollow needle will be stretched a bit and once the hot metal shrinks, it will hold the needle you need to put your yarn though absolutely secured. After that you will never have to prepare small holes to be abled to make something out of hide.
    Best wishes and I hope I can help out a bit, if you need more information on these needles, just let me know.
    By the way, your videos are awesome, big support from Germany!

    Hi! Thanks for this video! I’m wondering if the fur for the band is pointing upward or downward? Or sideways? Also, I watched your coon hat video-is there a reason why for the fox hat you did one single band but for the coon you did 3 bands?

    • @MountainMenOutdoors
      @MountainMenOutdoors  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! The Fox hat, the fur is sideways. I done this because a Fox has a much thicker fur and more consistent color than a raccoon especially this particular fox because it was a winter Fox. A winter harvested fur generally has a thicker fur and thicker skin. That’s also why I was able to make it with a single band instead of 3 pieces like the coon hat. Now, the coon hat, the fur was from a fall raccoon and his fur hadn’t gotten really thick yet. A raccoon has a wider range of colors in the different parts of the fur so for that hat in order to match color schemes I done the band in 3 parts and the hair on the front was pointing upwards to hide the seams on the top, the side pieces the hair was pointing towards the back also to hide seams and match colors of the fur the best I could. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

    Did you tann this fox? if yess HOW DIDYOU GET IT SO WHITE AND SOFT?

    • @MountainMenOutdoors
      @MountainMenOutdoors  Год назад +1

      We use a tanning solution we make out of egg yolks and neats foot oil which is as close to a brain tan as you can get. This makes really nice soft white leather. It takes a lot of working and stretching as it dries and it’s not as messy as brain tanning. Thanks for watching.
