This is the 2nd time I made your Vortex pattern, the first time I made it exactly to pattern and it fit my 21 1/2" head perfectly! The 2nd time I made it for my friend who wanted it a bit larger, I cast on 46 stitches, and it came out great, a little slouchy, but in a good way, almost beret-like. I've also made your fingerless gloves and the way you make your thumb gusset is now my go to way. I like how you think! I can't wait to try out more of your patterns! Thanks!

How do we separate the stitches at the start? From the video, I can only count 12 in the middle section, but I can't see the left and right. Or does it not matter?

No. But try knitting the ribbing very tight then
