I was about to graduate high school when this song came out. My mom told me that I was missing school to take her to the doctor, I think it was a day after okc bombing. This song was playing on the radio when I was driving home with Mom after she had a spinal tap performed after a recommendation of a doctor, and she was sitting next to me in the passenger seat in agony. We found out later that day she was diagnosed with leukemia, and unfortunately, she passed away seven months later after chemo treatments and a bone marrow transplant. For a long time I couldn't listen to this song with out crying remembering how poorly Mom felt that day and how much our lives changed because she became sick. She passed away at 46- now I am two years younger than she was when she passed on. I love you, Mom.

This is the song that was played at my older brothers memorial.. I remember it started playing before i even walked into the church it was being held at and i just broke down, fell to my knees and cried uncontrollably. i knew I would cry hard so i didn't even go in the doors of the church where the memorial actually was being held and as everyone was leaving all of his friends who knew me came up to me and one by one crouched down and hugged me and told me how much he loved me and always talked about me in one way or another if not be worrying about me, defending me , or how I inspired him to be the person he was. I remember everyday that we spent together growing up we were 5 1/2 years apart, and he taught me so many things in this life. He was my best friend, he was my hero, and he was my older brother. The feeling of missing him hasn't faded away and i dont think it ever will as a matter of fact i think the feeling of his absence in life has grown even more since the day he took his own life on july 22 2010 at the age of 24 and i was 19. Honestly words cant really express or explain the pain of losing someone so close to you it's unfair. I love and miss you Michael Scott Anderson

@@deathrider365 and @somafera sorry to both of you, the 70s was the best time to be a teen 😂. Bit of a joke that one, because the best time to be alive is obviously following whenever you're born. But here's my case to a presumably music-loving group: when I was 17 among the shows i saw, front row (because rock concerts were general admission then, and if you wanted it you got it, and I did) for $10-14 per ticket: Led Zeppelin, Queen and ACDC the latter as the warm-up band for Foreigner. We walked out when Foreigner came on, that's how high our standards could afford to be back then. I now open the floor for arguments about why the 60s/80s/90s/00s/10s were/are better. PS if there's anybody still alive and on RUclips reading and typing who wants to put in a good word for the 30s 40s 50s, have at it 🙂

    I recall my senior years.
Though I couldn't relate much to the song then.........I loved the sound and the lyrics and everything the song offered...... Now after more than 25years I was driving my teenaged daughter back to her hostel and she played this song on Spotify through the car's stereo. I simply stopped the car and my mind drifted to my high school days of carefree fun.
Now I better understand the deepness of this song. I lost my Mom 20 yrs back, to lung cancer. I lost my Dad 10yrs back to a road accident. And some 8yrs back my wife was diagnosed with Bronchial cancer, though we fought and won.
Life is wonderful, because there are songs like this.

    Lightning crashes
    A new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
    The angel opens her eyes
    The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
    Lightning crashes
    An old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
    The angel closes her eyes
    The confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall
Oh, now feel it coming back again
Like a rolling thunder chasing the wind
Forces pulling from the center of the Earth again
    I can feel it
    Lightning crashes
    A new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
    The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide
Oh, now feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the Earth again
    I can feel it
    I can feel it
I can feel it coming back again

Song meaning from the songwriter. According to a 1995 interview with the writer in Spin magazine:
"While the clip is shot in a home environment, I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room. Nobody's dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. What you're seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life."

Music is about what you wish it to be about. To put a label on art to me is wrong. If we labeled every artwork with a set meaning no one would be interested in art. I am surprised that anyone writing songs like this in the 90s would give an origin for a song.

+Ricky Creech If art just means what you want it to mean then it is intrinsically meaningless. Do you think art is meaningless? It also means that literally everything can be 'art'. Any word that describes everything, describes nothing. If all that is true then this song could be about sensible car maintenance. It isn't. It's about exactly what the songwriter says its about. If you get something else from it, that's all well and good but it does have an intended meaning. It also has a crystal clear narrative. I can use my computer monitor as a paperweight but it wasn't intended for that. I am perpetually puzzled as to why people who are into art/music want it to be meaningless.

"The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Her brother in-law Cory told us the story:
The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! "Lightning Crashes" literally lives on."
I heard the story on the radio and looked it up.

40 days before I gave birth to my son I held my Mother's hand as she died from CLL...she was 44 and I was 21. But giving birth to my son, I felt closer to my Mom in that moment than I did when I gave birth to my daughter months prior with Mom right down the hall (yes, my kids are close). This song hits differently for me bc the second I found out I was pregnant with my son I called my Mom and cried and told her (bc I wasn't supposed to be able to have 1 kid much less more), "Momma, I'm pregnant...What if God is letting me have another baby bc He knows you're gonna go soon?" We both knew. I'll never forget those last hours holding her hand walking her into heaven. My son was so still until she took that last breath and then he started moving around again.

Listening to it now at 40 it brings unfamiliar tears to my eyes. It is both sad and sweet but the sentiment of the song I believe is most powerful. Now that I've lived a bit and seen plenty people far better than me go under the sun and I cannot put it to words what exactly it makes me feel. But I like it.
