This was the required piece in a concert band competition in highschool in the late 60s. I think they wanted a piece nobody had heard before. You can't hum it and it takes getting used to. The first few tries were a train wreck - how do you know you are doing it right? But after a while we got good at it and could appreciate it's beauty. It was never *easy* though.
I will be the first to say it definitely isn't for everyone. In fact, it was generally disliked at its premiere. However, a lot of people love it because it is very strong structurally, and I like it because there are some very interesting atmospheres created in this piece, although these contrast with some pretty bad sections.
I have played alto clarinet on this piece, one of the very few pieces where alto clarinet is essential.

Go listen to "Mary Had a Little Lamb" then. You neither understand, nor appreciate great music.
