I believe that allowing someone to chhose anything as a higher power has been misconscrewed. I think Bill Wilson actually meant that making the group as a higher power was a way of "unlocking and slightly opening the door ". That slight opening the door helped the people that had deep resentments of their fathwe, church, and orgaized religion. Afterall, maming a list doesn't happen till Step 4. At the time that the Big Book was written most Americans went to church. Jesus opens the door to our heart. People with long term sobriety most often choose God.
