After three years’ pause, The Lilliputters Guild’s annual Christmas outing returned for 2022. Breaking free of the cold turkey and dull daytime television offerings, some sixteen Members and guests headed out to East London, to an area that has been on our hit-list for some time.
Arriving bright and early - sadly, less of the bright, owing to the appalling weather - we went big with our first tower. St Dunstan, Stepney, referenced in the Oranges and Lemons nursery rhyme, are a grand, old-fashioned peal. The current ring of ten were cast by Thomas Mears in 1806. In 1952, they were rehung in a new frame by Mears & Stainbank, at which point the treble, fourth and eighth were recast. They handle very well for their weight, although could really do without the low, false, ceiling, which makes the back bells slightly more awkward than they ought to be. With a band of mixed abilities, ringing was kept simple here, with rounds and Plain Hunt the staple fare, although this did allow a few of the party to ring Plain Hunt on 9 for only their first or second times. Footage here is of the first round of Plain Hunt, and a lower on the back eight.
Up next was Bow. Not to be confused with their more famous counterparts in the City, the church here is known as Bow in the Road, for fairly obvious reasons - the traffic snakes either side of the building. Luke and I arrived here quicker by bus than everyone else did by Tube! The eight bells here were recast in 1952 by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel - just four years before they recast the more famous Bow bells. Rung from the ground floor, they are a little jumpy owing to the long draught, and fairly quiet inside, but otherwise sound lovely. Here, the repertoire was extended considerably, from call-changes to Cambridge Major, both featured here, via Grandsire Triples and more Plain Hunting.
Lunchtime! And the chance to play on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) - which was the main aim of the day, although tower (un)availability sadly precluded us from doing an entirely DLR-based outing. A convivial meal at The Gate Clock Wetherspoons in Greenwich was the perfect chance to catch up - many of us seeing each other for the first time since Summer Tour, or longer - and, for those of us in the Secret Santa, exchange some festive cheer. Well, we were still in the twelve days of Christmas, after all!..
Food consumed, it was off to the Isle of Dogs. A conundrum arose - did we take the DLR back one stop, or did we “grab” the Greenwich foot tunnel? Common sense prevailed, and a little walk was the perfect way to start the afternoon. We even arrived at the church early - unheard of for a Simon day! Once the key arrived, it was back to the serious business of ringing, although the post-food snoozies had sneaked up on a few people by now. Still, we did crack out Forwards-Backwards-Queens as a party-piece to round the ringing off here, before the obligatory group photograph was taken.
Despite a broken down train threatening to derail us, we arrived at our final tower, Lewisham, bang on time. These are an interesting, colourful ring of bells, which have appeared on my channel previously. The church is a fine Georgian building, dating from 1777 and replacing an older church and incorporating the older tower (dating from 1512). Eight bells were cast by Pack & Chapman of Whitechapel, replacing a 15cwt eight which were only eleven years old! Only three bells - 5, 6 and 8 - remain from the 1777 ring, the remainder having been recast since. They hang in a Taylor frame of 1894, and were put on ball bearings in 1950. Whilst they don’t sound great individually, and are not easy to ring owing to tower movement and horrendous oddstruckness, they work as a ring, and I rather enjoy ringing here. Although tiring, we did bring round a half-course of Yorkshire Major, and rang plenty of call changes and Plain Hunt, before a respectable lower on all eight to finish.
Job done, all that was left to do was to wander back into town and finish the day off in the recently reopened Crosse Keys Wetherspoons - where else?! A fine way to round 2022 off, and here’s to 2023! :-)

This is the first video I have produced using CapCut video editing software - whilst MovieMaker still works on my old PC, it is getting increasingly slow, and a change was becoming evermore inevitable. This does mean that this video isn't as "polished" as normal, but hopefully future ones will see a lot of these teething troubles ironed out. Particular thanks to Jason Burnet for putting me onto CapCut, which is free on the Microsoft store (and works on Android and Mac too). A video Jason produced of OLEM Cambridge, using CapCut, can be found on the link below:

    Another great video
Bow are a particular nice sounding peal, a place I have never rung and no doubt never will.
Lewisham area right old mix of bells, it always make me wonder how they procured all these bells to cobble together a peal.
I used to ring for weddings at Stepney back in the 60s.
The good old days of horse drawn carts, gas lamps and chimney sweeps.
For a wedding you got 10 bob or 50P in new money.
My old man and Brian Bladon called it beer money, you could get 4 pints in the glue pot for that.
Ah those good old days all gone LOL.
It was good when you got 3 weddings which sometimes happened.

You may have spotted that many of our older members took their duty to go on frequent camera waving duty seriously as well 😆

Seems also like a good day out! Perhaps I should come along to these events to see what all the talk is about!

It might just be me and my musical ear being picky, but the 5th or 6th at Lewisham don't sound right. I think its the 6th although I'm not sure, but they sound like they are a few Hz to high above Ab and G. St Dunstan are very nice! Suprised that they don't have the strange muffly phenomenon that you get when the sally's of the back bells go through the boss' in the ceiling.

You're probably right - to me, 1 and 3 stick out particularly badly at Lewisham. They are not the most tuneful ring of bells, but I rather like them for what they are. I'd not rung at St Dunstan for about 15 years, so it was nice to go back there - I barely remembered them in fairness. There is some muffling as you'd expect, but it's not too pronounced surprisingly

Now that you have mentioned it, the treble and 3rd are quite bad!

Happy New Year to you too, Shane. I am glad you like the Forwards-Backwards-Queens. Reverse Queens isn't really a rung or recognised change - it could be a good one to try at some point though!
