I also got diagnosed at 23 and Medical School. It has fully changed my life. I can now identify my bad behaviours and call myself out which has been the biggest help for me. Additionally, I can finally watch a lecture and study. I wasn't diagnosed for so long due to living in the country and excelling academically. It wasn't until the physical manifestations started interrupting my life that decided to get tested. Turns out it was my ADHD that was giving me major bladder issues. Now I have my diagnoses I can somewhat function in a neurotypical world.

That literal dr saying that he doesnt think that you have adhd when you did, and telling you that because you're in med school that there's no way....is exactly why its important for you to share your story. Its so helpful for those of us that have it but who mask very well. Could you please link the book you read about high achieving kids who have adhd?? I didnt see it listed in your links in the description.

My psychiatrist said “ADHD is often undiagnosed for very intelligent people’s because they learned how to cope with it”.
Ironically my psychologist told me that I can’t have ADHD because he had people with ADHD as patients but I’m not like them… I was the first person who had the suspicion that I could have ADHD when I was 19 although I dropped out of German Highschool when I turned 18 and went to 8 different schools… my Parents always thought that I was just gifted (had an IQ of 133 when I was 7) and that those are just troubles associated with it.

What's crazy making is that you can go to the same doctor and tell them you're struggling in your semester and need to drop out and they will tell you "you need to get better sleep and if you really wanted it you would go get it"

@@user-uy8dv4zk4m I know how you feel and I can empathise, it's not easy! One thing that helped me is having a routine (keep it minimal and not overly ambitious) and sticking to it. A bare minimum routine that, if I stick to it everyday, I still get things done and dont fail/fall off. Keeping it simple and not too ambitious also made it easier to stick to. I hope that helps! there's loads of good advice on reddit btw

Also an F1 who got diagnosed with ADHD in final year of medical school... Not yet on medication as I went through right to choose so still on the waiting list for that but 100% think there's way more medical students and doctors with neurodivergence, whether that's ADHD, autism or something else than people would think. And one of the best doctors I know has both autism & ADHD!

@@magalimasson9472 But in my eyes it depends on the medical specialty. For me I can say that I don’t want to become a surgeon as my main symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity and impulsiveness as I can’t stand still for a long time. Also something like radiologist and dermatologist wouldn’t be something for me because those are just boring.
From my current standpoint I want to become an anaesthetic/paramedic because I want that adrenaline. I tend to drive too much aggressive but as a paramedic it’s good. Also as an anaesthetic I don’t have to be sterile while also being allowed to move myself around.

The moment I realised I had autism in my first year of counselling studies and then got referred to be assessed. I’m still waiting, but the ah-ha moment when I related to almost all the symptoms was so reassuring. I attend a group for autistic women and the way I can relate to them is amazing. I find it upsetting that neurodivergent people are more likely to experience complex mental health problems.

I'm 23 and got diagnosedw hyperactive adhd 2 months ago, we went private in spain (it's a bit cheaper here). i really struggle with emotional regulation but have alright coping mechanisms so for me therapy without medication is the current strategy, and it's working quite well. I've definitely noticed that it's held me back socially, especially in traditional female friendships where my gobbiness and impulsivity can be jarring. it's not rare for me to be the only girl in a group of 10. i worked it out because 2 of my best friends had it and believed i had adhd too. the first time i mentioned it to my then therapist 2 years ago he dismissed me, so it's so good that i finally have an answer.
