At the time, us slightly older kids were going apeshit over JL and JLU, and Teen Titans felt like those shows' overactive, annoying, kid brother. Basically, how TT fans now see Teen Titans Go. Cartoon Network went downhill after they got rid of their rights to play Pokémon and Yugioh and decided to play Teen Titans Go for about 8 hours a day. They shot themselves in the foot. I think Disney XD picked up the rights to the anime lines after that, but I think Pokémon has exclusive rights on Netflix now with limited episodes to the original series and Pokémon Sun & Moon and Journeys.
Okay but are we just gonna forget about Batman: TAS, the Justice League cartoons, and Superman: TAS? These are some heavy hitters as far as swaying a network’s favor, especially Batman.
Batman TAS bounced around channels though. As did Spider-Man TAS. I honestly can’t remember what channel I watched it on. Also Static Shock is another banger that went unmentioned.
Okay so Avatar mogs them all, but one show doesn't dictate the overall quality of a whole network. Avatar doesn't really fit with the overall vibe of "Nicktoons". It would actually be more at home on Toonami on CN if anything. Which one is the best comes down to your taste. Nickelodeon's emphasis is being a "kid's network", their shows are meant to feel like they were made "by kids, for kids" (contrary to what some say, this doesnt mean less smart or good; just that its made with kids in mind). CN's is being a place to showcase wacky cartoons in the legacy of Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, and Hanna-Barbera. While kids watch it, the brand tries less to be a kid's channel and more to be a cartoon channel. Adult Swim is a premier spot for weird experimental projects, and even family-friendly shows like Regular Show are more about creating a crazy playground of a world. Disney Channel animation initially continued in the legacy of Walt Disney, but with shows like Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls embraced a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek style that emphasized verbal irony, witty and likable characters, and lampshade hangings. This is all of course very generalizing, since the shows are made by different people. The networks only distribute them. But I like all three. ... also PBS Kids Go was underrated.
So uh, just going to ignore Ren and Stimpy, and the fact that Spongebob was originally said to be aimed at the college demographic and has enduring appeal among adults for its sprinkling of mature humor? I agree that by the producers' marketing, Nickelodeon was supposed to be a kids' channel (and teenagers, most people forget about Teen Nick despite iCarly being on it), but the producers clearly wanted to draw in wider appeal than just kids all the time.
George has a point about Nickelodeon S1-4 of SpongeBob, Avatar, TMNT 2012 and Jimmy Neutron are amazing but Nickelodeon is just a shadow of its former self
