    i feel like meta knights intentions for wanting to make dream land less lazy are because hes aware of the grand intergalactic forces that constantly threat their home. the only way to survive would be a society capable of fighting back
    meta knight is by all means an older more mature kirby. i have no doubts he knows of dark matter, the methods in which kirbys race is born, and the danger those dark forces present
    in kirbys adventure, which supposedly takes place before superstar assuming the series is all chronologically ordered by release, meta knight acts like a mentor character, helping kirby with items across his adventue until they encounter and spar with eachother, so i dont think his intentions at this point in time were ever malicious
    after meta knights defeat id like to believe he acknowledges that kirby is pop stars best shot at survival in this universe and from that point forward gives up on his militaristic conquest

      I doubt Meta Knight knows about Dark Matter.
      he was in approximately ZERO Dark matter games before Star Allies.
      Oh, wait, right. My bad. He did play a part in holding back the most powerful Dark Matter of them all! DaAaArK nEbUlA!!!
      "Metaknight is Kirby's Mentor" never made sense to me because... guys... Kirby is leagues above Metaknight.
      Kirby is an automatically gifted in any art that so interests him, and it's not just in his inhaling ability either. In Robobot he reprograms a robot all on his own. Even back in Super Star he knew how to best dismantle Metaknight's ship.
      Also in Super Star he's shown to know how to care for young creatures, so he's almost like an older sibling to Dyna Blade's kids.
      He's shown to be pretty mature, even granting forgiveness to creatures he really should despise based on his previous interactions, even healing Hyness of his kookiness and getting along just fine with Dedede and even wishing the best to Void Soul (and Astral Birth Void in the DLC)
      Metaknight, on the other hand...
      Like, if Metaknight was supposed to be like an older, mature Kirby in the original one, that idea was dropped like a hot iron as soon as Shinya Kumazaki took over the production of games.
      As early as Super Star Ultra he's shown to be hot headed, using a wish to fight The Strongest in the Universe.
      In Planet Robobot he thinks the best way to stop the alien invasion is to attack it head on from below while Kirby is at least smart enough to take it down piece by piece.
      In Kirby Fighters 2 he and Dedede... well let's just say Dedede might not be that much dumber than he is...

      Plus even if Meta Knight was just gonna like, give some combat trainer and disaster survival info to of all of Dreamland or some other peaceful action the Halberd, for whatever reasons, probably the intergalatic threats he'd want to help ready popstar for, is covered head to to tail in guns and weapons, so if Meta Knight drove it just to pick up and carry back a massive devilery Kirby might still get the wrong idea and attack cause, again. It's a massive ship covered in almost every part with weapons. I mean heck, we've never really seen Meta Knight's home, maybe he lives in the Halberd as some sort of mobile home/boat house combo. It's definitely big enough to have entire decently sized appartments for all the people we see talking on the bottom screen on the ds version. Heck maybe even pent houses.

    Hyness saved and cared for the sisters for years. Void itself is influenced by outside emotion and can use them to corrupt others. His hatred for the Ancients is what made the current Void Termina so evil and in exchange Void's growing dark power made him loose his mind to the point where he becomes completely corrupted by it in the post game. Hyness is described multiple time as a shadow of his former self even by the sisters and he is portrayed as completely single minded on the death of the Ancients and insane. Reminder that Hyness saved the galaxy from an undefined evil with his powers and was thanked for it with exile for what could be a few thousand years by the Ancients.

  • @angeldude101
    @angeldude101 2 года назад +59

    Thank you for making a Kirby Lore video that focuses not on the dark cosmic horror, but on the light, love, and compassion of the heroes who oppose them. Something I like to say about Void is that Void, as a primordial entity, is fundamentally a god of chaos, and all offshoots retain that chaos, but can channel it in different directions based on the emotions they were born with. Long story short, Kirby is basically as Chaotic Good as you can get.
    Also, Star Dream specifically is an example of a Paperclip machine (or Paperclip Maximiser). It was given one objective in the form of Haltmann's wish for infinite prosperity. As a simple machine, Star Dream would then do anything in its power to make that wish come true, even beyond what Haltmann expected or wanted. When Star Dream determined that Haltmann himself interferes with the wish it was given, the only logical option was to remove Haltmann, despite him being the one who made the wish in the first place. The name comes from the thought experiment of asking a machine to collect as many paperclips as it can. With no upper bound specified, such a machine wouldn't stop until the entire universe has been turned into paperclips.

    • @BobbinRobbin777
      @BobbinRobbin777 2 года назад +3

      skynet was probably a paperclip machine too.

  • @CyanicCore
    @CyanicCore 2 года назад +101

    Not bad at all! This was presented in a way anyone could understand and covers all sorts of elements! The capitalism with Haltmann was obvious, but you took even that and expanded upon it. Still, as someone who's played a LOT of Kirby, there's plenty you missed. To save me time and you a headache, I'll try and focus on a few more interesting pieces of lore.
    Everything you said about Meta Knight in his villain arc was true - EXCEPT his motivation. Yes, he was dissatisfied with how placated everyone was, but only because they became complacent. His goal was to make Dream Land strong enough that when another being like Dark Matter or Haltmann came around, they'd be able to survive. If you beat Guest Star mode with every character, a message appears about each character becoming a hero.. - I'd say this is what he had wanted.
    There are some hints tying together the ancients early on, but you just barely missed a certain one: Halcandra is ALSO located in another dimension. This term is vague at first, but at least by Star Allies it's confirmed that every time a character says another dimension (Those secret areas in RTOD, where Galacta Knight hangs out, where Hyness ended up), they're talking about the same unnamed realm. Plenty more pops up tying them together later on, such as Magolor's magic rings appearing in its background.
    This is easily the most debatable point in this comment, but there may be a simple(r) reason Marx has that name outside of economy. As you mentioned, his original name translates to Mark, which is likely a much more foreign-sounding name in Japan. The decision to make the name Marx was likely to maintain this in America, going for an easy route. Additionally, while it looks like a line was just added to his cutscene, Super Star Ultra was more accurately translated than its demake. Marx's idea of mischief is almost definitely twisted...
    A common theory with quite a bit of background is that Dark Meta Knight won enough control after Kirby and the Amazing Mirror to control the realm completely, even using it in attacks. When you bring in that's the same mirror Sectonia was gifted, her descent makes a bit more sense.
    While you brought up some key themes regarding the Mage-Sisters and Hyness, as other comments mentioned it isn't quite that clear-cut. He DID save them, he DID have good intentions, and they DID look out for each other. I'm not sure if this directly contributes to the lore, but the Mage Sisters are completely hollow on the inside (this can be seen after losing the Arena), implying the Jamba whatnot is all that kept them together. This by no means invalidates the points about cult tendencies - knocking Zan out of the way was a questionably forced version of what both Haltmann and Sectonia did after they were consumed by their own beliefs. It's just that like most Kirby, there was good in there, too.
    *If you're going to skip most of this, read this one*
    Again, I'm not going to try and unpack it all here, but all the Dark creatures have a lot more going on. For one, Dark Matter Blade (the first to appear) supposedly took its form based on the surroundings, almost to fit in. With both Kirby and these beings, we continually see them influenced by what's around them, the main difference is Kirby absorbs where Dark Matter infects. However, they perfectly become counterparts - to the point where Blade's clone mimics Kirby's rainbow blade that was used to defeat it. Despite what Hyness may indicate, the original text for Void states it is the primordial root of ALL matter, changing based on its influence. This helps each form make much more sense. Void Termina, constantly bombarded with Hyness's negative speeches/prayers, is filled with negativity and hexes. Void Soul (thought that was a terrible name until the last update) has begun to develop a separate conscience, and thus struggles with what form to take at its end, letting out pure beams of light rather than Termina's specific magics. Void is the closest to pure, and among whatever other factors change this incarnation (attacks are different, etc), positivity reaches it.

      I’d argue that the religious indoctrination/cult allegory with the sisters still makes total sense. Cults tend to prey on people who are in disadvantaged situations - for example, college students, who are usually still figuring out what they think and how they feel about the world and are likely struggling with money. Cult leaders also tend to be incredibly charismatic and likable as well, before eventually showing their ugly side once the followers are so dedicated that the leader’s previous kindnesses will keep them from leaving.

      Also, Star Allies claims that if you feed Marx, he will be loyal, which some people have claimed meant he was trying to conquer Popstar so he wouldn’t have to deal with food insecurity, but I don’t think that that theory is true- I don’t think that the implication was that he was hangry, I’m pretty sure they just needed a reason for him to work alongside Kirby in Star Allies, but I like to imagine that he was just hangry.

    Assuming the Kirby timeline is in order of release, it could be assumed that Meta Knight's conquest was motivated by the past few crises; the famine Dedede brought about, the threat posed by the Nightmare wizard, the destruction of the Rainbow Bridges, and the famine instigated by Dyna Blade. Meta Knight could've been a militant extremist that believed relying solely on Kirby would be foolish.

    I don't necessarily think that Void Termina is the end-all-be-all origin of Kirby, Dark Matter, and other such eldritch forces. Rather, I think Void Termina is the same as those forces. A translation of the purest void into a manifestable form. But Void itself -while technically the absence of kindness- Is also the absence of malice. In the Soul Melter X setting for The Ultimate Choice mode in Star Allies, the final boss you face is simply called "Void", and it's in-game description states that it manifests in many forms across time and space, and that it's nature changes depending upon how it lives.
    When left alone on the edge of the cosmos for eons, It becomes Zero and Dark Matter, a solid form of negative emotion and ill will. When cared for by a hateful cult leader, It becomes Void Termina, a raw, seething angel of entropy and war. But when given love, a home, good friends and food, it can become kirby, A friend shaped ball of love. And sometimes, -not always, but sometimes- an aspect of Void that has lived it's life in hatred will learn when being exposed to love instead of being completely destroyed. As is the case with Gooey. The hunger of entropy will always remain in some capacity, they are still aspects of the void. But how the nature of oblivion interacts with the rest of the universe is determined by whether you treat it well or not.

    i mean, not that it matters, the message remains the same, but speaking of the character, rather than improving as a person, he simply was freed because of Kirby's positive energy.

    Congrats on doing what BDG couldn't. And without living in the woods, too!
    Judging by Meta Knight's other appearances, I'm pretty sure he just took issue with the citizens of Dream Land (Kirby and Dedede in particular) lazing about in times of peace. Dream Land had already been invaded by a few cosmic horrors by this point, so he probably just wanted everyone to be constantly vigilant like he is.

    One of my favorite bits of Kirby lore is that the Mirror World of Kirby and the Amazing Mirror held "reflections" of key members of the Kirby Canon, most notably the twisted imposter Dark Meta Knight, but also the mysterious Shadow Kirby. It's implied that those in the mirror world are the classic trope "your true reflection," with how Dark Meta Knight acts like how the Dream Land resident would if he had no inhibitions (immediately trying to dispatch Kirby at the beginning of the game). However, Shadow Kirby throughout the game appears to aid you, tossing healing items and even providing Meta Knight's sword if you somehow lose it during the final battle. This all implies that even Kirby's "evil doppelganger" is a sweetheart who just wants to be a friend, and that's what he does, as after beating Dark Mind Shadow Kirby promises to look after the Mirror World as it's protector.

    • @donnie_duckling
      @donnie_duckling 2 года назад +4

      You're right! I've always wondered, though, what is it that made Shadow Kirby less powerful against the threats of his world/dimension. I've always thought that maybe, the fact that Kirby has the conviction to save everyone, or as many as he can using his abilities, no matter how big the threat, is what Shadow Kirby lacks in himself. I mean, as far as I know, he does appear but minimally in the whole game, helping you through but not attacking, not trying to fight. Perhaps this "reflection" is a Kirby scared of his abilities, or of not being able to help everyone, or just doubting of his power. Or perhaps just felt that he couldn't fight against Dark Meta Knight and Dark Mind and that's why he couldn't defeat them on his own?
      I also am curious as to what happened to him after the game, as we don't see him again after that, and know what happened in the Mirror World, with Dark Meta Knight and Shadow DeDeDe taking over it and corrupting the mirror itself, causing all the distress we see later with the fate of Sectonia.

    I'd argue that Sectonia doesn't lose her individuality as a result of fusing to the Dreamstalk, but rather as a simple end-state to her own insane desire for control and corruption caused by the mirror. The Dreamstalk simply gave her a vessel to make that more prominent. Hell, she might not have even lost it at all, depending on your interpretation of the pause screen description, and perhaps lost the ability to perceive everything _but_ herself as an individual - it is stated that she believes "true beauty is control" by the end of the game, and that Taranza's pleas for her to come back to her senses fall on deaf ears, suggesting that she is only able to perceive her own corrupted desires, and that she believes everything outside of herself simply exists to be used because any sense of empathy, recognition of others, or compassion has been lost.

    I imagine the orange butterfly was the same one in every game, as a judge and reaper. But Galacta Knight's final wish was to win and restore his honor. The butterfly took that as his final wish, sent Galacta's soul away, and turned his body into a vessel to carry out that final wish...... Which failed. This reaper butterfly still keeps their job, but has resentment and feels honorbound to finish Galacta's last request. Que Forgotten lands.

    My thought is that Kirby and all the dark matter / void bosses represent the same entities influenced in different ways. Afterall, Kirby themselves is somewhat of a void, able to absorb things infinitely. They all also displayed certain abilities to copy, mimic, and mirror. The more "evil" voids likely are mirroring the darkness and evilness in the universe whereas Kirby mirrors the love and kindness in the world. Until we get a canon Kirby origin story, I suppose we will not know for sure how Kirby turned out this way versus reflecting the darkness like the dark voids he fights.

    Rewatching this, I remembered a meme I saw that said "billionaires aren't self-made men, trans men are." and I think that could apply to King Dedede's "Self-made king" thing. He probably doesn't have royal blood, but maybe grew up on the stories of great kings and aspired to be one. So he declared himself king of dreamland, and dreamland being dreamland, no one really cared, prompting the events of DL1, and years the king finally got his act together and became worthy of being a king like the old stories.

    great, now you gave me two ideas for potential plotpoints in future kirby games.
    1: galacta/morpho knight being found at a gravesite for (potentially) one of his old friends, standing there in silence. (before you fight him again, of course)
    2: after suzie fails to find a way to revive haltmann (which likely takes place during a somewhat sequel for planet robobot), she sits alone, sad that despite everything she did... it was all in vain.
    then, taranza (through relating with the loss of a close friend), desides to be there for her.
    since whats better than being alone? being alone *together.*

    Note about the dimensional mirror while not explicitly stated one could make a connection with it to the mirror from the snow queen. It was created by demons to reflect only bad things it shattered and fragments would embed them into a persons eye/heart causing them to only see bad things and those with one in their heart would become could and callus. It's not a stretch for it to be the basis of the dimensional mirror.

    I believe in relation to dark matter, kirby, void and especially zero two.
    is a metaphor about depression vs positivism.
    This explains why love and positivism are the only thing that destroys dark matter.
    I say this because dark matter sword only attacks for being alone.
    and zero two seems to suffer only to exist in deep sadness, hate and agony
    depression is not a feeling.
    depression is a disease that without love and positivism (and of course very expensive medicine)
    It will destroy you more and more and worsen your life more and more until you either try to take your life and in some cases take the lives of others in the process...
    (it's a game for kids it doesn't have to be complex lol)

    i know this video is very old now, and nobody will probably read this, but rewatching it (again) made me think of something.
    kirby, most of the time, is characterized as like a baby, or a little kid, which made me wonder well, what reason besides being cute is he characterized that way? and then it hit me: its because of his view of the world.
    kirby represents an extremely innocent and untainted worldview, like a child's. he simply believes that well, hurting people bad, helping people good. he isnt corrupted by ideas of greed or prejudice or bigotry or doing bad things for a greater good, his morals are simple and untainted, just like a little kid.
    and so we have this embodiment of a childlike absolute view on morality facing off against characters who justify their evil or just are embodiments of greed and malice.
    but hey what do i know-

    I always assumed the name Marx was a reference to comedians The Marx Brothers (or maybe more specifically Groucho Marx since he has the most lasting influence). Not sure if this would have been a connection made in localization only though, like you said. I don’t know enough about Japanese to know if the name was always meant to be understood as “Marx” or not.
