This is a great video, but I don’t really agree with the statement that Indy is a static character. In my opinion, Indiana Jones does have an arc if you watch the series in chronological order. We begin with the Prologue of the Last Crusade. In 1912, Indy is a brash 13 year old boy scout who strongly believes in doing the right thing. "That cross is an important artifact, it belongs in a museum”. After outrunning the thieves and giving the cross to the sheriff, Indy is taught his first big lesson: being a boy scout (figuratively at least) won’t get him far. The cross is handed over to the diggers, he loses all he worked for, and the leader, named Fedora (he was Abner Ravenwood in the original script) serves as an inspiration to him, literally copying his look. A few adventures and a break up with a 17 year old Marion later, and we cut to Temple of Doom. In 1935, were introduced to an Indy whose very different than where we left off. He doesn’t believe in any magic or religion, is misogynistic (as seen with his relationship with Willie), and would rather sell a priceless artifact to get a diamond, than put it in a museum. The only reason he goes to Pankot Palace is because he believes the Shankara stones will bring him fortune and glory. But just like every Indy story, there is always someone worse than him, a dark reflection of him, that forces him to do the right thing. By the end of Temple of Doom, not only has he been enlightened by the power of Shiba, but he also realizes that fortune and glory isn’t always the best option. Cut to Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Indy is in an interesting place. In 1936, Indy is starting to focus more on the museum and the actual preservation of artifacts, but he still seeks the fortune and glory the Ark of the Covenant will bring him, and still hasn't fully grasped that most magical religious artifacts are quite real. By the end of the film, not only has he reunited with Marion, the one women he truly shared a kindred spirit with (after his less than satisfying relationship with Willie, Marion was probably a breath if fresh air to Jones), but he also has realized the danger of a device like the Ark. Then we come to the first act of Last Crusade in 1938, where we find Indy on a ship trying to reclaim the cross of Coranado: his first artifact, the one that got him into the business. And he says this: “It belongs in a museum!” He has come full circle to being the boy scout he used to be. Notice that the only artifact Indy ever recovers in the series is the cross, the one he truly just wanted for the museum, the place where it belonged. In both Last Crusade and Crystal Skull, Indy isn’t searching for fortune and glory. He’s going on an adventure to help a friend in need, and ultimately fills a hole in his past. For Last Crusade it was helping his father in his quest for the grail and patching up his strained relationship with him. For Crystal Skull, it was about helping Oxley, which lead to him finally confronting the idea of marriage with Marion and reuniting with Mutt, his own son. Wait so the guy Indiana copies his look after in the beginning of the last crusade was originally named Abner Ravenwood? I did not know that. But in the kingdom of the crystal skull Indiana says to Mutt "Marion Ravenwood is your mother?" Then when trying to get through to professor oxley he tells him "Ox they're going to kill Abner's little girl". (Speaking about Marion) So if they had not changed Indiana's inspiration name then the grave robber at the beginning of the last crusade would of been Marion's dad. Meaning Indiana's future love interest and later wife's dad would not only be his future father-in-law but also his first adversary.
@@derickwest6996 Exactly. In Raiders they mention that indy studied under Professor Abner Ravenwood at the university of Chicago. I was just about to comment the same thing before seeing someone else had noted it. Will check the video you posted also, never seen it before. Regarding the last point about Dial of Destiny, there is also some character growth shown in another area, and you see it with the way he opens up to people and his sincere about his emotions. He deals with Wu Han's death in Temple of Doom, by simply never mentioning it ever again. When he thinks Marion died, he simply tries to drink his grieff away and the only thing he says to his good friend Sallah is "Marion is dead". Then with the context given by Crystal Skull (and that ironically is a lot enhanced in the Great Circle) look at how he sabotaged his own relationship with Marion between Raiders and Crusade by not speaking about his fears and simply running away. Afterwards he was still unable to speak with his father openly when the two were in the Zepplin in Last Crusade even if he shows that he has a lot of bottle up emotions. It is very obvious that he has a lot of problems opening up to people (which would make sense with someone who grew with a father who was so distant). Then in Dial of Destiny, he talks very openly with Helena with which he has just a pretty surface level relationship, despite the fact that she is his god-daughter, about the death of Mutt, which in my opinion is the most emotionnaly vulnerable he was in the entire saga, and gives us, in my opinion, a good scene in the context of the entire saga, in what is an overall mediocre movie.
@@SmithYorkinster Thanks and that's a very interesting point you bring up. Dial of Destiny was a very mixed bag for me, as someone who loves almost any Indy content, but that scene not only served as a great explanation for Mutts absence, but really did show a more vulnerable side of Indy the audience doesn't usually see. And that really stood out to me as one of the best dialogue scenes in a Indy film. Dial of Destiny may be flawed but the nuggets of greatness are in there. Like Indy's work as an archeologist, you just need to dig a little deeper and scratch beneath the surface.
I loved the journey from start to finish. There's only a few things I'd like to see improved like letting us pet the animals. I'd personally would like to see them push the T rating to the limits to get closer to the same grit and intensity as Raiders and Doom.
I Consider this game apart of the Original Trilogy that's how good it is, so I guess that would make it a Quadrilogy now. So now i hope MachineGames and the writer who wrote this story stick around and do another Trilogy set after The Last Crusade so that would be 4 games total, do we need it no, but do I want it hell yes, I would love to see the next game and Indy goes on another Adventure with his Dad just before Indy Joins the O.S.S., and I'd love to see two more games after that and while they're static serials I do want to see each game as it gets closer and closer to Crystal Skull bridge that gap. I would even love another game featuring Mutt before he Enlisted and was K.I.A. to bridge that gap between Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny so maybe by making these games MachineGames can make the two worst Indy stories better with these other stories around them.
I think the Director/Writer for this game is Todd Howard, he was the one who approached Machinegames for the idea of Indiana Jones and lead the development of the game.
@@NCC1371 Amen, just keep the series in the 30s or 40s where it's meant to be. So many stories can be explored in this period and "Circle" was smart to do so.
@shaunw9092 I mean I still enjoy Crystal Skull. I understand why people don't like it but it was still a fun movie with a crazy idea and it didn't try to make Indy useless.
Randomly popped up on my feed when I sat down to eat- certainly not an Indiana jones fan but your review of the game and the explanation of the series really caught my interest- but also made it easy to understand. You did amazing with this video and certainly earned a Sub and like.
I think you’re very spot on about the static character thing. The only issue I have with it is where you stated Indiana Jones has the same character arc in every movie where he starts out not believing in some mythical object or power and then he goes through something which makes him end up believing. He actually has a few lines in the great circle where he mentions or alludes to the events of raiders and what he witnessed with the arc, which is good, but it makes it hard to believe that he would be skeptical about anything ever again after the events of this game.
I would really love to see them tackle the original movies, other stores of games that have come before and modernize them, and even try to make sense of the sequels.
@@scourgeneo7834 I want every tutorial for future Indy games to be a remake of an intro from one of the original films! Oh yea you’re so right! A fate of Atlantis remake with the great circle format would be insane!
4:29 that line didnt come across as it came from nowhere for me. Just seconds before he said that, he was in a heated confrontation with Viktor Gantz, so for me it came across as a natural comment for him to make after that confrontation.
The intro of raiders in the beginning of the game isn’t just a tutorial, it’s literally a sell for the game. What better way to sell someone on an Indiana Jones game than to have them play through the scene that introduced everyone to the character. I think it shows the developers confidence in what they’re presenting to the player.
The only point I want to make is that technically Indiana Jones has reversed character development between Raiders and Temple of Doom, because the second is a prequel, and in it, he's basically Belloq, up until 2/3 in ish, then he's the Jones we know, and then from there, yeah he's pretty static
Great review. It was my GOTY also. In the next game, we need a flashback level with River Phoenix. Also, we gotta have Indy's dad, Sean Connery, in the next one. Set immediately after Last Crusade?
I watched through the game and its entirety, I honestly think its one of the better game titles out this year, and its surprisingly refreshing the way they paid homage to the movies was just a cherry on top. I love the Indiana Jones series and this is probably the closest we'll get to a good Indy game bar the Lego ones
I like how when the characters are fighting or punching its not super dramatically fast or sped up its actually realistically slow quick movement if that makes sense. In reality we try to act fast or fight its not as fast as we think it is.
Awesome analysis. Thank you! I still watch the Crystal Skull, more as a fun movie, but the first three are the core, and The Great Circle is the fifth movie I wanted to see, but I never thought we would get it in the form of a video game. The level of detail is remarkable.
The Vatican and Gizeh were awesome, really packed out with a variety content. It really falls off after that, felt unfinished and quite thin. Overall a really unique experience though, such a pleasant surprise of a game
I finished the game this morning, so great analysis. I only disagree that Indy doesn’t change in the movies; there’s definite development between Temple of Doom and Raiders; he’s a lot more mercenary in the prequel and that changes him for the better in Raiders and Crusade.
Dial of Destiny should have ended Indiana Jones with him staying in the past. It was poetic, his life interest of history making him part of it. But the studio seemed to have sent the director a note of having to make the ending open, so out of the blue she punch him and drags him back to his time by the argument of changing time too much, although they already did by going back in time, showing them technology. Like, imagine a Marion epilogue with her seeing something in a museum and it's his damn hat or something. Hell what an ending that would have been.
I kept hearing this criticism, how short the game was, took 14 hours to finish, etc... But I kept going "oh we're at the third location, must be the last place... Oh wait no THIS must be the last place... Oh shit wait no THIS is the last place surely... No way, we're still going?!"
best part of the game. You feel like indiana jones because you solve problems with your solutions. Maybe not the best solution, but if it works then it works
Ugh...I had this video on as background audio and did not realize that it would contain spoilers. Next time, please consider adding "SPOILERS" into the title and/or audibly announce it in the beginning. Thank you.
I’d say a minor but important part of the great circle is the focus on Marion. I’m a big Indy fan my main gripe with Crystal Skull is the CGI but Harrison is Indiana in both movies. Dial of Destiny major down was Phoebe Waller Bridge if you had just replaced her role with Short Round a kind of adopted son from the beginning we never see in any of the sequels it would have worked 10 fold. John Williams kills it in Dial and Skull but Indy is so much more cooler if he’s in the 30s/40s. Anyway I don’t fundamentally disagree but if there is any connection between the films Indy is always leaving close ones chasing the past. He leaves Short Round, Marion, and his Dad. He makes up with Marion in Skull and Dial it would have been perfect if he’d done same with Short Round.
Was it just me or did anyone else think they were setting up Gina as a potential bad guy? I noticed it first when you’re in the artifact room under the Vatican and she looks at the exit which I took as her looking for her way out so she can run away after she gets what she needs. Secondly comes when you’re on the plane with her after getting away from the Japanese, and she seems to be manipulating Indy when asking him where the next piece is and that they should go right away. Maybe I misread a lot of these but I was a bit confused bc of these scenes
Locus kept knocking me out in the fight in the Vatican. Must’ve gotten knocked out like 5 times and then I’m like wait a min and just shot him with the revolver 😂😂
i have genuinely havent had such a fun time gaming in like 10 years as i had playing this game, had no expectations as you cant have that today but oh my was it a treat.
This game was very good but I still felt like Indy was kind of a pushover compared to the original trilogy of movies. He was commanded by Gina throughout most of the game and saved by her numerous times. Should have been the other way around but Indy only saves her one time to my knowledge and then she instantly tells him “I don’t need to be saved!” And then commands him to do what he should do. I would give the game a 7.5/10. Better than anything Indy has had in a while but not perfect
It was not perfect. The story was fine. The characters were mostly OK. The biggest thing is that it was significantly better than the last two actual movies. It had the right feel. With some polishing a decent movie could have been made from the premise of this game.
Indy has a pretty significant character arc in the original trilogy. He’s far from a static character. Here’s a great video on the subject. ruclips.net/video/jSrU-mm3Wyk/видео.htmlsi=JDcFHU9bEvDV8Pxr

Canonically we never see Indy reload a gun (other than his pistol) so it makes sense he doesn’t reload any of the other guns lol 😂
and to add, he just picks up the guns from enemies, he wouldn't be carrying around spare clips.
@ exactly!
I loved the journey from start to finish. There's only a few things I'd like to see improved like letting us pet the animals. I'd personally would like to see them push the T rating to the limits to get closer to the same grit and intensity as Raiders and Doom.
I like how Gina doesn’t feel forced like her story feels natural and really well done
Really excited for the story dlc
Something substantial and good needed to come after Dial of Destiny. It happened and I believe it has saved the franchise. Thank God.
I thought this was going to be a dial of destiny game. Thank God I saw the great reviews and game pass
said it well at the end... makes you feel like a kid again. great game!
Couldn't agree more
I Consider this game apart of the Original Trilogy that's how good it is, so I guess that would make it a Quadrilogy now.
Or we can simply cut Dial of Destiny all together instead of trying to salvage it.
I think the Director/Writer for this game is Todd Howard, he was the one who approached Machinegames for the idea of Indiana Jones and lead the development of the game.
For me there were always 4 (i count Fate of Atlantis, amazing story and overall game). Now there are five Indy classic stories :)
Best Indiana Jones Game installment since Fate of Atlantis in my opinion.
Randomly popped up on my feed when I sat down to eat- certainly not an Indiana jones fan but your review of the game and the explanation of the series really caught my interest- but also made it easy to understand. You did amazing with this video and certainly earned a Sub and like.
@@BraylinL523 Made my day, thank you!
This game is so good 😂😂😂
Yes
Am just amazed by how amazing this game was. My personal Game of the Year!
I'm really hoping that we get another game of Indiana jones by machine games!
Best adventure game of All I ever played!!! Including uncharted, tomb raider
I like every Indiana Jones movie, I don't know why anti-woke community has so much problem with Indiana Jones try to be Indiana Jones.
One of the developers had a pride shirt, of course they are gonna make up their narrow mind before actually playing.
It's great to find other people who understand Indiana Jones. Subscribed!
Im glad that the First person indy is good. didnt need to be entirely 3rd person.
Haven’t finished Great circle yet (near the end though) and it is a fantastic story. Way better than crystal skull and dial of Destiny combined.
@gemaferro Facts
Well said! Kudos to Machine Games!
The Vatican and Gizeh were awesome, really packed out with a variety content. It really falls off after that, felt unfinished and quite thin. Overall a really unique experience though, such a pleasant surprise of a game
The Great Circle slaps, and so did your review.
Slaps? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
I fully agree that this is an objectively great game, but my only issue is that the story wasn't long enough, i wish it had a few more locations.
Dlc is on the way
I kept hearing this criticism, how short the game was, took 14 hours to finish, etc... But I kept going "oh we're at the third location, must be the last place... Oh wait no THIS must be the last place... Oh shit wait no THIS is the last place surely... No way, we're still going?!"
10:12 oh is that how you pass the fire, i just ran through it, jumped halfway first
best part of the game. You feel like indiana jones because you solve problems with your solutions. Maybe not the best solution, but if it works then it works
Only other game I’ve played where you can hit people with guns until they shatter is Fallen Aces which went early access a few months ago
Ugh...I had this video on as background audio and did not realize that it would contain spoilers. Next time, please consider adding "SPOILERS" into the title and/or audibly announce it in the beginning. Thank you.
I have finished the game yesterday and it is one of the best games I ever have played.
Brilliant review. While we'll never have Harrison again...I kinda hope they find another actor that might be able to do more films.
Yep. I've thought for years Chris Pratt would make a good Indy. Or Ryan Gosling.
@simonbrandy9662 Id side with Ryan over Chris. As much as I love the guy I think he comes off too boyish for indie
I wasn’t expecting to like Gina that much but she’s my favorite indy love interest I think
Another banger from the appreciator
I know a lot of fans like to dump on Indy 4 and 5. But personally, I really like 'em.
It's like an Indiana Jones simulator, and I love it. I've never enjoyed a video game this much.
i have genuinely havent had such a fun time gaming in like 10 years as i had playing this game, had no expectations as you cant have that today but oh my was it a treat.
only issue with it is the boss fights being nearly impossible to not get killed 30 times in a row
Ahhh Finally a Continuation to the Indiana Jones trilogy
But...
I SAID FINALLY!
Its one of those games ya wish just wouldn't end.
I was skeptical but it's it's good, it's very good. let's just pretend Kingdom of the crystal skull was never made or dial destiny
I've played it and love it
Looooove the game , amazing 👍👍👍👏
Indy is a classic adventurer, not a miserable old man.
TLDR: Indy discovers arks, but shouldn't have an arc.
There's going to be more indiana jones games
It was not perfect. The story was fine. The characters were mostly OK. The biggest thing is that it was significantly better than the last two actual movies. It had the right feel. With some polishing a decent movie could have been made from the premise of this game.
Maybe Archie took it
Indy has a pretty significant character arc in the original trilogy. He’s far from a static character.
Here’s a great video on the subject.

DOD made CS look like Shakespeare lol. But this redeemed the series!
I love Crystal Skull, but this is definitely the true 4th Indiana Jones movie
Under a minute and I already see some shade thrown towards Halo Infinite.
Ok, then.
@@st.paddymad7085 tbh I actually really like Halo Infinite but it’s just an easy game to use as an example for a lot of problems in the gaming industry
@ if it were another game, I’d probs would agree, but I guess you can call it a knee-jerk reaction to seeing others giving criticism, valid or unnecessary personal nitpicks, I just gotta defend Halo Infinite, like a Hunter from Left 4 Dead spawn-camping at the nearest crescendo event or just before a safe-room of sorts, if that analogy makes sense.
@ I do agree it’s an overhated game for sure especially now with all the updates! I’ll have to pick another game to use as an example in the future lol
Also Left 4 Dead references always make sense!
@ a surge of Left 4 Dead vids got me back into that series recently.
As for another game to use as an example, I dunno what you could choose as an example, perhaps Dead Space 3, but yeah, it’d be very nice to see Halo Infinite no longer get the hate it used to get nowadays indeed.
Woah woah woah, how bout a spoiler warning bro? The game hasn’t even been out for a week, we haven’t all had a chance to finish
@@DocD173 first 3 seconds of the video has one but sorry there is not an audio version for if you are just listening to the video! Hope you’re enjoying the game so far!

Great game but so buggy
the NPC problem happens to the player as well, the pyramid in Thailand or whatnot has many invisible walls were run jumps don't work, like my other comment thats Bethesda being Bethesda ngl a update is well needed, health and stamina regen is so badly slow that all upgraded and still takes a min to figure out what its supposed to do
Gina and Indiana had zero chemistry, unfortunately.
Yea sure
The point of Gina is that she's NOT a love interest. They are a missed connection.
@@adamouellette5971 Exactly. I found it to be a pretty spot on example of how many relationships work in the real world with people who are hyper-focused on their careers. Gina spurned Indy the exact same way Indy spurned Marion, believing there was greater importance in her career as a journalist than starting a relationship with Indy. The character of Indy isn’t even really supposed to have a “love interest” in the first place. He’s the world’s ultimate adventurer that can’t be tamed.
@@randymarsh6931 totally. The dynamic resonated with me and felt really relatable. This is something I've experienced in my life. If you haven't lived this you may not understand this feeling.
@@randymarsh6931 It was very clear from the start of the game that nothing was going to happen between them of any real substance, its a very uncomfortable state of mind to live through and they captured it beautifully. Being hurt by a previous romance but not yet sure how to handle that information in the new connections that form.
“Better than the last two movies.” Jesus Christ. Stop. Dial is wonderful and tells a far more original, interesting and cohesive story than Great Circle. Great Circle is wonderful, but its narrative utterly collapses in the final act and it doesn’t have anything to say with the character.
Just another casual who knows nothing about Indy making a bullshit video to tear down the last two films. It’s exhausting.
I feel like you can prop up the dial of destiny without feeling like you need to tear down the guy making the video, or question his knowledge about Indy as if he isn’t a very simple character that needs to be studied.
Also I don’t know what you’re so angry about because he even says that there are things in this game that make Dial of Destiny better
Nah. The Great Circle is way better than Dial of Boredom
@leebrandt8597 That's true, in my mind. Indy ends up getting married and settles down a fitting end for such a legendary hero.
Cannot, wokelin!
Adding lesbian and boss beaches isn't what indy is all about. There needed to be zero lgbtq in this game.
Exactly. They didn’t even exist back then.
